Anyone Stoked for Apple's Tablet Release?

I've read so many books on my PC (finishing up rich dad poor dad right now actually), it's really not that difficult. Just make the text bigger. My eyes don't hurt, and I prefer it to reading real physical books now mostly.

Except, that I can't read a book on a laptop (or any laptop besides a tablet) and shit at the same time. Or jackoff, while shitting. Or watch movies, while shitting. Or read nickycakes.com, while shitting (and jacking off).

This is a very niche device, and exactly what I wanted. An iPod touch is too small to watch videos on, and a lugging a laptop around is too much (especially if it's over 17).

Because it doesn't have a physical keyboard, you can put it in more interesting positions. It may just be an oversized iPhone, but that's just what I needed.

Disclaimer: I don't have an iPod/iTouch/iPhone/iMac, but I will be picking this up, or waiting till the Chinese dupe it and sell it on the cheap.

Also, the you can make iPad specific apps, which will be nice. If this isn't good enough, then just wait another year when they released the updated version with the new iPhone os etc.

Part of the reason why they didn't make a new OS for this was because nearly everyone has an iPod or iPhone. Even if they don't have one, they've at least used one once or twice. Since this is so similar, people are already comfortable with the device.

It's like carrying an actual notebook (more like legal pad) around that does shit. This actually reminds me of a Bud Light commercial. Sometimes an iPod/Phone is too light, a lot of times a laptop (even a tablet or netbook) is too heavy. For those things that are just a tad too awkward for both of those things, that's where this fits in.

Like, browsing Facebook on your phone just fucking sucks. But say you're at a friends house, coffee shop, or just lounging around the house (there's also a reason they were doing demos on couches at the event), you don't really want to bring a laptop with you, cause it's just too much. I think this will be a good fit for quite a few people, especially the later versions.

I feel like their is no need for a tablet unless your drawing on it. Email, browsing, etc on the go is achieved by a crackberry, iphone, or other smart phone. And if your in a hotel, airport, or anywhere else for that matter and want to type out a document you have a laptop.

Am I missing something here?

this is just a big iphone. that's it. oh yeah, except no phone.

there isn't 1 good reason to get this thing. I would think it would be good for porn, but it doesn't even have flash.

Definitely not a kindle killer.

And to whoever said something about 120gb version, good luck getting that in a slim device using SSD's. Storage per inch just isn't quite there for that form factor yet.

why cant it have a solid hard drive? i'd give up some thinness for that.

i think so. why just get a 'book reader' when you can get a 'book reader' plus internet, and more.

because the book reader is inferior due to the lcd screen. the paper-like display is what makes kindle bearable for reading. otherwise people would simply use their laptops to read novels, and very few do that, not because they haven't tried.

so you have to decide, do you want a book reader? if so you're better off with a kindle. do you want more than a book reader? then you're MUUUUCH better off getting a netbook that is half as expensive and has MANY more features.

the ipad can't run flash, so web browsing is completely crippled. the base model isn't even 3g which is a complete joke. There is no multitasking, and the applications you CAN run are limited by what's available in the app store, which is extremely restrictive and does not have much available that brings it anywhere even remotely close to having a cheap netbook running windows 7.

and let's not pretend it's more convenient than a netbook in any way. it won't fit in your pocket, and if you're sitting somewhere and want to watch a movie, you'll need to have some sort of stand with you to keep it propped up which you'll have to remove it from if you want to interact with it and then put it back. there's nothing to cover the screen to protect it, so you'll need some kind of hard case for it. hmm, i wonder if they could just attach the case and put hinges on it to also prop the thing up when you want to watch a movie... maybe they could install a keyboard in the case so you could type on it... oh wait, that's a laptop.
