Anyone Stoked for Apple's Tablet Release?

critique all you want, but if you don't see the blatantly obvious business model of universities using this for all textbooks, you're blind.

You're mad if you think universities are going to give up their physical textbook monopoly and move to an electronic alternative. There are a lot of departments at my old school that specifically do not allow kindle versions of their books to be made already. You're also mad if you think staring at an LCD screen for hours would feel good on the eyes when reading text like that... there's a reason e-ink has been so successful.

critique all you want, but if you don't see the blatantly obvious business model of universities using this for textbooks, you're blind. students carry around one iPad with all 4-5 of their books loaded onto it rather than a heavy load of books. Can use the touch interface to highlight in books even, make red marks or notes and much more.

Not only that, but know why the textbook companies will love it? Gets rid of competition from used books.

There's a reason people don't read textbooks on their computer screen at home but would read them on the kindle.

An LCD screen is not a kindle killer. If your theory were correct, everyone would use kindles for textbook reading.

Oh and btw, no flash lol.

For reading books/documents only, perhaps. For everything else this thing slays the Kindle.

lol... Reading books/documents is all the Kindle does, that's what it's for. The ipad can't really slay it on anything. That's like saying my PC slays my tv, because it checks email too.

However, they show Jobsy there surfing the New York Times in portrait mode, which is utter bullshit, since the NYT is your typical (READ JUST ABOUT EVERY MAINSTREAM MEDIA SITE) 960px wide website. There's absolutely no way you can utilize this device to surf the web in portrait mode without horizontal scrolling.
I watched the announcement; they made a specialized app for the NYT site.
Also, the iPad is 1024x768.

That said, I see this as a very niche product that will hopefully spur other netbook developers to come out with improvements. I want a convertible tablet with multi touch. I'd use it for ebooks and drawing.

If I was rich, I'd get one. I'm not. If any of you rich motherfuckers wants to get me one, I won't complain.

Kindle doesn't have touch-to-highlight, many of the textbook manufacturers are working exclusively with Apple, Kindle doesn't have a color screen, on and on. When's the last time you saw a textbook without some kind of color in it? Even the advanced math and physics books I use have 3D plots in them that use colors for the contouring. McGraw-Hill's CEO confirmed this, and said:

"Yeah, Very exciting. Yes, they'll make their announcement tomorrow on this one. We have worked with Apple for quite a while. And the Tablet is going to be based on the iPhone operating system and so it will be transferable. So what you are going to be able to do now -- we have a consortium of e-books. And we have 95% of all our materials that are in e-book format on that one. So now with the tablet you're going to open up the higher education market, the professional market. The tablet is going to be just really terrific."

Integration with online problem solving and testing via an app, etc. This is a no-fucking-brainer.

Don't be a retard. Just because you're an anti-Apply fanboy (read: just as bad as a Fanboy) doesn't mean it won't make money.

Flash blows anyway, so who cares. HTML5 youtube and vimeo for me. Maybe this will spur advertisers to not use flash ads anymore, and use more HTML5 or dynamic canvas based ones

I use to be an apple fanatic hype feen killa killa hard body for a while. But after seeing the ipad (giant ipod touch) and the recent release of the imacs, I have completely given up on apple and will say, APPLE IS A HYPE FEEN!!!!!!!!

After using windows 7 64-bit, I don't think I will ever go back to snow leopard or anything mac for quite a while. The reason being:

Mac = Moderate and restrictive hardware, modern and quiet design, and great os.

PC = Scalable hardware, ranging from good to terrible design, and great os.

Yes, RESTRICTIVE HARDWARE!!!! Even with a mac pro, omg I add ram! i add hard drive! omg I add 3 choices of graphic cards! I addd.. the end. Stop sucking the tit of apple and free yourself from the HYPE.

Sincerely,
Your loyal mbp, mac pro, mac mini, and iphone user.

What are you fucking talking about? It slays it across the board. People saying the Kindle is better, or that this isn't a Kindle killer, need to have their heads checked. This does everything the Kindles does and a million things more.

Yeah, that's my point. You can't surf ANY main stream website in portrait mode unless they have a "special app" for it or perhaps a mobile version... which is pretty gay.

It's just a big iPod. Reading books on it would be as uncomfortable as it is on laptops.
E-ink all the way. And btw LCD screens suck a fuck load of energy as opposed to e-ink. I don't know, maybe it is ergonomic but personally wouldn't buy.

I wouldn't use a 1024x768 tablet for a lot of heavy web surfing, but I do think it would be minimally useful in portrait mode.

Apple sells on the user experience, the glitz, the polish, the apps: iBook, iWork, and iTunes. If you won't use those apps, there's not a lot of reason to get an iPad.

If the screen is beautiful and readable indoors, I may pick one up in the future for cheap (I read a lot of ebooks in pdf etc), but the one thing about Apple products is it takes forever to drop in price.

Please show me the "magic" part of the ipad that turns it into e-ink. Until then, it sucks for reading books. Have you ever actually tried to read an ebook on a laptop? I can't get 20 pages into one on my netbook before my eyes feel like they are going to blow up.

ipad is more powerful and can do more, there is NO way you can deny that.

is it better for reading books? no, if you want to only read books get a fucking kindle or whatever.

why you guys argue over stupid things is beyond me, and im a joke.

"- External Display Support. iPad applications will be able to display content specifically targeted to an external display connected to the iPad via the Dock connector." whoever said no hdmi or whatever, a dock->hdmi cable is coming.

2nd gen will fix a lot of the things though, just like any other Apple product

Not seeing much advantage over a much cheaper netbook.

Guess this won't be my first purchase of an Apple product.

eh I've swapped a CPU on a Mac Pro, it's not hard to do. yeah Apple is restrictive on hardware moreso than building your own, but comparatively really to any other manufacturer, after a new socket comes out are you going to change the CPU? no. Is anyone going to do hardware changes to a laptop of any manufacturer beyond RAM and maybe a hard drive? no.

Definitely not a kindle killer.

I knew it was just going to be a giant ipod touch, I don't know what anyone else expected.

I mean, I'm bummed it's not a true OSX device which multi-tasking AND multi-touch.

And also, big-time screw up on no front-facing camera. If they gave the device video conferencing capabilities out of the box it would definitely gain a lot more market share.

And to whoever said something about 120gb version, good luck getting that in a slim device using SSD's. Storage per inch just isn't quite there for that form factor yet.

Yes, swapping a CPU on a Mac Pro is hard to do LOL. After the upgrade, what happens to your Applecare? I sure hell know they won't take it back once it is modified beyond "Apple Standards".

As for PC's, New sockets do come out and along come new motherboards for those sockets, which run anywhere between $200-300 with a WIDE selection of manufacturers. Where are you going to purchase an revision motherboard for Mac Pros once another CPU socket releases? Please don't tell me that is easy to accomplish too.

As for laptop upgrades, I was strictly referring to the Mac Pro, not the macbook line.
