Occupy Wall Street

Uh, yeah, ergo inch is not a measure of speed. I haven't read your other comments but judging just by this one it would be a complete waste of time.

Miles, yards, feet, inches... Is speed measured in "bits"? I don't think anyone would have had a problem if they had said "won't slow them one bit."

My views on these sorts of things (politics, economics, etc.) are starting to sort of exist now when before I didn't pay attention to much of it. I've seen a lot of people say that the "us vs. them" mentality shouldn't be there, but it seems very real regardless. What it looks like to me is a fight between people with the "I need to work for someone" (aka "the 99%") mindset and people with the "fuck you I'm not working for anybody" (aka "the 1%") mindset. The former seems to have much larger numbers, while the latter seems to have much more power on an individual basis. The majority of both sides seem to be acting in self-interest. That's human nature, and there's nothing inherently wrong with that.

I think a big question that separates the two groups is if, without considering self-interest, a single person is responsible for the well-being of another single person on some ethical level, and if so, then to what extent?

More and more, I'm also starting to believe that college is largely a scam, but this probably isn't the thread for that.

Because a "bit" in this case means a small amount, not a binary digit Did you miss that class on the origins of digital logic?

“No person, corporation or business entity of any type, domestic or foreign, shall be allowed to contribute money, directly or indirectly, to any candidate for Federal office or to contribute money on behalf of or opposed to any type of campaign for Federal office. Notwithstanding any other provision of law, campaign contributions to candidates for Federal office shall not constitute speech of any kind as guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution or any amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Congress shall set forth a federal holiday for the purposes of voting for candidates for Federal office.”

The problem with this is that only super rich people will be able to afford to run for office beyond the local level unless there is some means to contribute to people qualified to run but lack the money to do so. A slightly more practical solution would be to remove the ability of non-people (corps etc) to donate and to limit donations from individuals to a small amount. Which then leads to audits and people knowing who donated to who etc etc etc.

It would be easier to just name Bofu benevolent dictator for life.

This is my take on it, but with "corporations as people", wouldn't that logically mean it's discriminatory against a certain group of people (corporations)?

I agree that corporations shouldn't be allowed to donate, but I assume that'd require a repeal of whatever grants corporations the same speech rights as individuals, no?

No shit sherlockgeomark. An inch is usually also considered a small amount, especially in comparison to a mile.

HONK IF YOU'RE IN DEBT AND STILL BUY $12 A PACK NYC CIGARETTES

lol

btw... an inch is a unit used to measure distance, not speed. How's that over-education working out for you entitled, ignorant, under-informed hippies?

Speed is distance over time, pal.

What's your problem with entitlement? I see little difference between rights and entitlements. And last time I checked rights are pretty cool.

What is it exactly that I need to be informed about? Capitalism is an unsustainable system. It must always grow, always, because if there were to be a balance it would collapse. Nature is recklessness commodified into a number of useless goods shipped thousands of miles to a store near you afforded by cheap and exploited labor. That kind of logic has led to and will continue to lead to immense ecological damage that will result in drops in food production on the order of 20-30% in some countries and sea level rise that will displace tens of millions. People already migrate more often due to natural disaster than for economic reasons.

What economic system would you like to see?

You need to read up on private property rights, comrade.

In the 1800s more than 55% of America were employed in the agricultural industry. Before the industrial revolution, I bet it was over 90% of the world population. By 2005, only 2-3% of the US is employed by the agricultural industry. The reason you say capitalism is unsustainable is because it keeps growing? What? You think Capitalism is Andre the Giant's heart, and it will give out once we reach like 11 feet and 700 pounds? Why don't you go make some real, well-thought out criticisms about the fed or fiat money or something.

And wait, what? Nature is recklessness commodified into a number of useless goods shipped to a store near you afforded by useless and exploited labor? First of all, learn how to write english. Your sentence makes no sense. Regardless, I'll pretend it has substance. Still... WHAT? You must have taken exactly one class on Marx and learned about commodification and exploitation of an individual's labor. And ecological damage is generally (GENERALLY) a fake idea.

Your brain is still twisted in a knot. An inch, whether you consider it small or large (it is very large compared to a micron), is still a measure of distance, and that's all it is. A bit is not a measure of distance. And neither is a measure of speed. Yeah, inches per second is a measure of speed. That's not inches, brainiac.

What about the Unions? It seems the unions have an undue influence also. Do not get me wrong, most Corporations support liberal over regulation in order to support their market position and to hinder new entrants, in other words, restrict the free market.

But Unions are out of control. Especially, but not limited to, the Public Employee Unions and their campaign contributions/support. They are literaly are hiring the people in charge of their salaries/largess.

Those of you that are limiting your scope to the evil of the Corporation are not thinking broad enough.

Campaign finance is huge issue. But so is reapportionment, the proposed evil of the fairness doctrine which is true limitation of free speech, and the lack of tracking of smaller donations which, with the internet, can be used to covertly funnel millions to any candidate.

To say "get the money out of politics" is stupid, naive, and reflects a lack of a macro understanding of the world. How exactly would politics work then? No one is then able to support a candidate? I cannot produce and pass out brochures, books, flyers, and in today's day and age blog posts? Where is the line drawn between money and support? And once you allow me to spend some money, where does it end? When I buy a TV commercial?

Why don't these 99%'s put their collective intelligence together and figure out how it would really work in the real world. But that is asking too much from them, to actually create a solution. That is something we can only get from a 1%'r.

Let me shed some light on the inch/inch situation.

An inch is a measure of distance. But, colloquially, it can be used as a measure of relative speed. As it is in the case of inching along. The inch-worm inched away; before I knew it, he'd traveled an inch.

So, SHUTTHEFUCKUP.

Ok, this has gone on long enough. I don't give a crap about any of this OWS stuff. It's all just part of the reptilian/illuminati/nwo progression. Those FEMA camps? Those are going to come in real handy for a lot of the 99% if they start getting outta line.

But that's unimportant. It's a lost cause anyway. This thing about speed, distance and time, this has to be settled. And that video, why did you make me watch that thinking it would help resolve the whole inch thing.

Excellent point, I didn't even think of the unions. I blame it on lack of sleep.

Did you really think that "slow them an inch" literally referred to their average walking speed or something?

slow : "reduce the advancement or progress of: His illness slowed him at school."

inch : "a very small amount of anything; narrow margin: to win by an inch; to avert disaster by an inch."
