Occupy Wall Street

So they should get my sympathy because they are too ignorant and/or lazy to make smart decisions? I've got no problem with people protesting. What I have a problem with is why/where these particular idiots are protesting. A quick browse on the OccupyWallSt.org forums shows all you need to know. They are not protesting to right a wrong. To stop an injustices. They are simply doing it because they feel that those who have made more money than the rest should have it taken from them by force and given to another group of people.

If they really wanted to attack the source of corruption, this would be happening on the steps of Capitol Hill, not Wall St.

Those demands are completely idiotic, I agree. I saw this list of demands posted to though: DETAILED LIST OF DEMANDS & OVERVIEW OF TACTICS FOR DC PROTEST (compiled from suggestions made in this forum) -- Please suggest additions or edits so I can propose this list to those keeping the official one. | OccupyWallSt.org Forum which I like most of those, it was obviously written by someone who knows whats up.

I have a feeling all these pissed off people aren't going away anytime soon. Should make for an interesting few months of news. This kind of seems like the "Tea Party" movement, but instead of just corporate shills leading the masses, it's actually kinda real.

People in the US are pissed. Don't expect them to disappear back into their homes / apartments anytime soon. This is still gaining momentum, so who knows where it'll lead.

see... why this fuck them attitude? and i'm not attacking you, I just really don't get the mindset that so many seem to have.

They got duped, conned, manipulated...they are not bad or even dumb people. More than likely, just distracted...have no fucking clue what's going on in the world. Either way, why the fuck them stupid welfare hoarding pieces of shit attitude?
natural selection. only the strong survive, only the wise excel.

Much better and more coherent. Needs a lot of work but at least it's a starting point.

You are agreeing with the demands or the fact that they are at least getting better at figuring out what they want?

The list of demands sounds like a list of Democrat issues. Where's mention of the deregulation of Futures and derivatives signed by Clinton? I am certain they wouldn't want that to be canceled and yet it is a factor, isn't it?

And why so much talk about corporations out of politics, how about no corporations when there are no unions allowed.

The movement is a joke, and to all of you that say the Tea Party is a bunch of corporate "shills" - get out of your social bubble.

It is amazing how none of these people even lay any blame at all on the feet of the homeowners that lied about income, about assets, and about everything else in order to get these loans. Did the mean Banker make them do that too?

When will people learn. It is not about what the government is doing, it is about what you are doing. Of course the governemnt is a factor, but who leads whom? Why look to the government as a leader, the government should follow.

wrong.

2 words: George Soros. Move on, people.

Not just him either, there are a lot of other leftard foundations and $$$ also trying to turn it into the center/left of reelect obama. Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater though, this is as close to a bona fide protest movement the country's had since obama killed the antiwar movement. There is plenty of pure intent and well-founded grievance in there.

What they're missing is actionable program. Along with like 99% of the active dissenting population.

What about the young guy who decided following his passion was more important than money, and drowned himself in debt to become a chemist, physicist, biologist, or whatever? Now he's $60k in debt, can't find a job in his field, and is realizing he's getting fucked with a giant red, white, and blue pole harder & harder every day by the banks and corps. And these are the guys that come up with neat things like penicillin, the internet, flight technology, etc.

Can't really just pass them all off as lowlife deadbeats looking for a handout, because that's simply not true. Everyone wants a good, comfortable life, but not everyone's passion is to make as much money as they possibly can. Simple fact is, the US economy sucks, and it's no secret the banks and corps have been raping & pillaging as much as they can for decades now. Although I don't give a shit about some pink haired girl with googly eyes screaming, "i'm a unique individual! listen to me!!!!", you gotta admit, the point in general is something to be pissed about. Thieves are making out with hundreds of billions of dollars of taxpayer money, and destroying the middle class in the process.

As a real estate agent who sold during the bubble, i can attest not a single mortgage officer , agent or such ever had to force anyone to lie on an application.

this exactly

It's not that black & white though (never is). MSTeacher..... Really? For that?

People follow your passion and society owes you because you are the ones that come up with innovations? How about that person, instead of getting a cushy job with a large corporate bureaucracy realizes the hard knocks in life and actually starts innovating because they realize how hard life is - this innovation is then made available on the marketplace instead of being put on the shelf in some company. This is life. This is an experience. If they are that great and "passionate" then they will figure it out. The others will just get another student loan and get another degree and then eventually teach at some college and talk about how terrible capitalism is.

Nah, I just mean when people protest in other countries, the citizens many times will say, "well, you know, they have a point and have a right to have their voices heard". When people protest in the US, the more likely reaction is, "fucken deadbeats wanting a handout!", or maybe, "fucken losers! if you hate the US so much, get the fuck out!".

There are two points in here.

The first is that the reason everyone tells them to STFU is because everyone else already knows how hard life is. These students already took a handout to go to school. Now they want everyone to do more for them. Do you understand how many overqualified people have taken lower end jobs to make ends meet? They are telling the students, STFU, deal with it, and get your butts working. If you do then you will create more opportunity and innovation, more small businesses will be created and that overqualified workforce in lower end jobs will cause those companies to excel beyond imagination. This is good for the economy as tons of talent is forced to direct their energy into creation of enterprise etc... not just take the corporate job. Think about it.

The second is that everyone decries the elimination of the middle class. While we can make income arguments, my question is, what does one expect as a middle class lifestyle. Because you can live better than most of the rest of the world in the US making very little money. What do you want? Maybe it is not called "middle class" because you are closer in income to the working class than to the rich, but who cares, the majority of people can live a great life without much money.

The money that went towards that iPad could have covered multiple student loan payments.

I didn't want to start a new thread just for this, but this Occupy Wall Street shit reminded me of it so here we go. A friend is looking for a housekeeper and puts in his ad that people should email him at blahblah@blah.com and (in his ad this is in caps) INCLUDE A RESUME. He has since received 9 applications, 7 of which did not have resumes. Attention jobless people: learn how to follow instructions.

I never said they deserved sympathy. Far from it...if you you took out too large of a loan bc some slick fucktard conned you into it, suffer the consequences and learn your lesson. No sympathy, but i sure as hell don't think that means i'm superior to them like some in this thread do, or that they are all worthless trash looking for handouts. That's some delusional, self righteous bull-shit, said to stroke fucking egos. Nothing more.

All this fucking nit-picking over the protests targeted at Wall Street rather than Washington, while I agree that I would prefer the protests to have taken place on Capitol Hill... fuck it, Wall Street will do, maybe Washington will be next. I think Wall Street is a logical place to protest. I think some of you are clinging to your capitalism a little much...it's clouding your vision or some shit. Billions of dollars have been transferred through corruption and out right theft.

So, by this line of thinking.. If someone breaks into your house and robs you, but had the power to pay off the cops beforehand, you would only blame the police department? Not the thief himself? You guys act as if pure, honest capitalism is being protested..it's the corruption and infiltration of our government that's the problem.

Nobody deserves fucking hand outs, but people do deserve for their countries financial future to be protected, and not handed over to corporate, fraudulent thieves. They are both equally at fault.

So, you can all wait for the perfect little protest scenario, with nothing but like-minded entrepreneurial participants. All with strong views of free market capitalism. Free of any leftists, commies, white trash, bums, leeches, beggars...and any other people you may not like.

The list of demands is completely retarded. Not that they would ever be taken seriously, but if they were then they would just be starting points. Demands are never met in full.. they are negotiated downwards.

I'm sure the demands were made with this in mind, or that the demands would be statements more than anything. A marketing campaign needs attention grabbing headlines.

If they were made with intentions of those things actually occurring, then yes...they are idiots.

Actually, I'm not going to protest at all. I've got nothing to protest about...because I paid attention to the world. I didn't buy a house I couldn't afford because I knew to never sign any binding document without having an attorney and/or accountant look at it first. I didn't get myself into $50,000+ of student loan debt because I'm not foolish enough to accrue that kind of obligation without having some plan to pay it off (hoping to get a job with a degree you hope the market will want is not a plan). I, unlike the majority of those who blame Wall Street, do not ignore the world and hope the government will have it handled. And that is the problem. There is no personal accountability.

Everyone who wants to "occupy wallstreet" wants to do so through legislation from the very government that is the root of the problem. We need a bill for this. We need a bill for that. We need more regulation. We need bigger oversight. More government. Sorry, but anyone who thinks that is a fucking idiot and is completely blind to the ways of the world. The only people who can protect them from "thieves" are themselves. To stop what you claim is so rampant would require an informed populace, which if the youtube videos I've seen of these protestors is any indication, they are certainly not. Ignorance is the problem here, not greed. You can gather millions of people to march on wallstreet and it will do jack shit if they have no clue to the way our government and economy truly operates. You think protesting will bring about change? Strength in numbers? That somehow all these people will suddenly wake up the American public to some hidden agenda that they evil corporations may have?

Fuck no. People will march. The rest of the world will glance at it on CNN. Then everyone will go back home to watching Dancing with the Stars. The reason why stuff like this never changes...because it requires work. Real work. It requires people to learn on their own and not spoon fed information. It requires someone to hunker down and spend time on their own reading Hayek or Mises. It requires true passion, not some fleeting instance of it.

Were you not robbed through corruption?

Look..I agree on most points you make. Actually, I never argued against any of your points. All i'm saying is that it's something...good people are fucking trying, however ignorant they may be. I have no illusions that something will magically change bc of these protests, but I do believe it adds to the ever building momentum. I also know that sometimes tipping points are reached, and massive change occurs...not likely, but i'm not giving up on it.

I don't agree that it takes someone to spend time reading Hayek or Mises for change to occur, or that it takes a high IQ...I think it takes desperation, anger, and momentum.

It requires someone to hunker down and spend time on their own reading Hayek or Mises.

And yet, you don't see many of the libertarians namedropping Hayek advocating e.g., a guaranteed minimum income or state-assisted health insurance, as Hayek himself did:

F.A. Hayek said:
There is no reason why in a society which has reached the general level of wealth which ours has attained [that a minimum income] should not be guaranteed to all without endangering general freedom. [...] there can be no doubt that some minimum of food, shelter, and clothing, sufficient to preserve the health and the capacity to work, can be assured to everybody. Indeed, for a considerable part of the population of England this sort of security has long been achieved.

Nor is there any reason why the state should not assist the individuals in providing for those common hazards of life against which, because of their uncertainty, few individuals can make adequate provision. Where, as in the case of sickness and accident, [...] the case for the state's helping to organize a comprehensive system of social insurance is very strong. [...] there is no incompatibility in principle between the state's providing a greater security in this way and the preservation of individual freedom.
The Road To Serfdom, p. 148

Maybe libertarian ideas would get more play with the grassroots left if it didn't seem like libertarians were only out for themselves and instead actually advocated the sorts of things Hayek wrote about above.

Of course, if you really are just out for yourself, and books like Road To Serfdom are just ammunition for your arguments to thinly justify your own selfishness, or you're a hard line an-cap, then you're not really offering anything of practical value to "the 99%."
