Hurricane Irene

LOL @ all the white people problems in this thread.

My Mom is driving up to The City tomorrow. I think she's stupid for attempting it.

White people problems are complaining about your flight being delayed, not getting fucked in the ass by a hurricane.

And for all I know it may not even come close to NYC and the like, but im just warning you if it does.

I was referring to the people complaining about canceling their fantasy drafts and their backyard gardens. Not that I wouldn't also be upset about these two scenarios. After all, I'm white.

lol ok

I have family in Tuckerton, NJ, right by LBI. They're taking it pretty seriously I guess. Stocking up on supplies, food, etc. Hope this thing takes a right turn into the Atlantic and gets back down to tropical storm strength.

I'm in south-central PA and the local weatherman was even worried about it. I'm about 150-180 miles from the coast but they are still expecting 5-10 inches of rain and 60-70 mph winds. The worst part is I'm going to be driving through it from Penn State.

I'm not saying that humans can cause earthquakes and Hurricanes, but I found this a little interesting. Who says its not possible?

might not want to try and drive in 70mph winds

You dont understand, homes in FL are built to withstand high winds. The 1995 building code requires all homes to have hurricane straps (you know, so your roof doesn't blow away), larger roofing nails and more. It is also not common to have wood framed homes in FL, which almost every common home in the NE is wood frame.

If this hurricane hits land at a cat 3 in the NE, you are fucked, so completely fucked. Roofs will literally blow right off, they have no building code against high winds up there. If it hits NYC, I cant imagine the damage it will do.

Edit* I am a certified home inspector in FL

I have seen trailer parks make it through cat 2-3 storms no worse for wear. All your roofs are not going to fly off and the world is not going to end. Just a bunch of big city pussies watching to much news.

They do not live in the warm tropics, their houses are not made of popsicle sticks. All hurricanes need warm water to strengthen, as it moves north it will weaken just like they all do. It will MAYBE make land fall as a Cat 1-2, odds are it will go out to sea like all the others. If it does hit as a cat 1-2 nothing will happen, power will go out, trees will fall over, nothing else.

Wood framed homes are quite common in parts of Florida and the Caribbean, it just depends on the age of the city. Key West is FULL of old wood homes that have survived more storms than any of us. There is no cement on islands, no one paid to ship bricks to them, historic homes are wood since that was all they had. Building codes are only enforced on new construction and major renovations, more houses than not do not meet the 1995 code.

Edit* I have physically been outside during hurricanes, my family once lived in a trailer, I have stood in the eye of several hurricanes, I have sat on my porch during hurricanes, I have lived in shitty wood frame homes, I have been hit by damn near every storm to hit Florida in the last 30yrs. That guy is no Mike Homes.

All I know is the news channels have a tendency to over-hype just about everything these days because it helps keep people tuned in and interested. So they spoon-feed us our disaster porn. So it's hard to determine what is a very dangerous situation and what is largely hype.

Every time some disaster hits you can hear the excitement their voices hoping the number of dead will increase, etc. More dead, more ratings.

Anyway, my guess is it will hit NC as a Cat 2, then immediately turn into a tropical storm and be pretty weak disorganized mess by the time it hits NYC. Half of it will be on land after NC, so I'd think it would have half as much power to draw from.

But I'll still have my popcorn out in hopes of a serious unprecedented catastrophe. It makes for great TV. I apologize for saying what most people think.

I was at Leadscon and ended up packing my booth up early to GTFO of NYC. Don't even want to have to deal with worrying tomorrow about whether the airports are shut down. Glad to be back in Phoenix, where the only thing we have to worry about is heatstroke and illegals.

Theres actually cement production in the Caribbean.

Parts of the Caribbean have much stronger homes than the wooden and cheaply made homes in the US.. because they have to withstand hurricanes. Houses in the Caribbean can be made of cinder block/concrete/cement/metal.

this just in... buildings in nyc made of mostly papier-mâché

A very tenuous link but w/e, you made me think of one of my fav (uk based) sketches.

Oh you mean like " An infamous 1938 storm dubbed the Long Island Express came ashore about 75 miles east of the city and then hit New England, killing 700 people and leaving 63,000 homeless."

The population is probably 10 fold now and your all living in the same shitty houses
I am from the town on Long Island, Westhampton Beach, (high school name 'The Hurricanes') that the eye of that Hurricane passed over, it was the epicenter. Thanks but I literally have the book, I know all the stories.

I also know that many hurricanes have hit since, many that I remember, and I remember being being evacuated from my own home.

This is part of life. It isn't an unnatural, unprecedented holocaust. And most importantly, it hasn't hit yet.

Hitting at high tide vs. low tide can be a huge factor.

The storm is god's wrath for NY's passage of gay marriage.

Truth. The earthquake was the warning but NYC didn't change their ways. Yes, it's only been a few days but to a entity who created the world in just 7, he has high expectations.

I live on Long Island, stores are mad houses right now (Home Depot, Target, supermarkets, etc) picking up supplies and expecting the worst. Hopefully it fizzles out before it can do any serious damage. I'll take strong winds and alot of rain as long as there are no flooding or serious damage due to trees, power outages, etc.
