Hurricane Irene

so....how much damage was actually done? My problem with this is although I agree with being prepared, new yorkers aren't going to take heed to this "boy cried wolf" evacuation procedure by bloomberg. The next time there is a hurricane they may choose to ignore because of how the media has overblown irene.

The eye of tropical storm Irene landed on LI last night, about 10 miles west of me. Her first stop: Coney Island. She apparently wanted to take a ride on the Cyclone.

I'm lucky to still have power and water and no damages. About 400,000 people on the island have no electricity.

You say that from Arizona, son? Those poor fools who stayed behind on Port Bolivar during Ike thought like you. You know what they are called now? Dead people.

From the Gulf Coast Plains: Sure some of us (but now all) had a false alarm during Rita, but I'm glad we were prepared for Ike a few years later anyway.

The scientists cannot predict exactly what a hurricane will do until it does it.

Did you actually read what I wrote or do you always like to jump to conclusions?

Hah. I live right in front of a beach (about 2 blocks in length away), plus I have a bay 1 block away from me in the opposite direction. Even then my house did not even come close to being flooded. Streets aren't flooded, only thing that is noticeable is a single tree in the neighborhood that fall down.

Just goes to show how much of a hype it was since my area was labeled as Zone A with mandatory evacuation.

Some of you don't seem to understand risk. Even if there was a 5% chance that Irene was going to fuck my house up the ass with a big black dildo, I'd take some simple precautions to make sure that my family and I would be safe. You're willing to pay for things like homeowner's insurance and car insurance but not willing to spend a couple hours preparing for a possible disaster?

Living in South Florida all of my live, I agree with you. I would have at least put shutters up... you never know what's going to happen. It may not the winds from the storm that mess things up, but a tornado that spins off and puts a street sign through your front window.

Not too bad here in South Central PA, but I did lose power for 15 hours, which was from 2am last night to about 5pm now. Sucked not having power for anything but was only worried about my freezer that was stocked with tons of food. All good now though.

I came home from State College today and Lebanon county is a fucking mess. I counted at least a dozen trees down shutting down roads and my neighbor had a tree fall on the house.

Saw I think 2 trees while driving around waiting for the power to come back on. Mostly lots of leaves and limbs. Oh, and one of my shutters came loose. And a friend of mine had a tree fall on their fence.

Was lucky here. A branch came down on the property: one half inch thick and 14" long.

Though there is local flooding, etc.

As usual, the local news hyped the shit out of this.

I live on the very south shore of Long Island. I don't give a fuck. I haven't done anything to prepare, I have no flashlights and no extra food or water. Just beer.

Same - how'd you make out?

Edit: My "same" comment meant about the south shore, not the non-stocking up part. I had plenty of flashlights, batteries, food, water, alcohol, etc.
