Healthy food to eat at night?

Brilliant debating skills.

Yeah well, until he brings some vegan reasoning to the table how else should I approach it? I know he's been doing it for a while, but you don't have to go vegan in order to cut weight (or eat late at night). You just have to get self conscious about what you eat. I'm not saying there is no validity to what he's saying, but most people will never go vegan so it's a poor way to point IMHO. Other ways to solve this problem without douchbagism.

Why not let the facts speak for themselves and leave personal attacks out of it? It'll make smart people more likely to properly consider your points.

Especially if you want to lose weight, you should try to eat as many carbohydrates as possible before bedtime.

Haha, have you never low carbed? It kills your appetite. Makes dieting easy, paleo, leaning toward keto, I dropped weight and was never hungry.

No I have not. I've done quite the opposite and dropped weight like a rock.

Actually, both of you are right. In most cases, the people who adopt a certain diet (vegans, vegetarians, paleo enthusiasts etc.) and then swear by it had a really shitty diet (junk food, soda and so on) before deciding to change their lifestyle.

If you're overweight and have a shitty diet, you will lose weight and feel better by switching to a vegetarian lifestyle.

If you're overweight and have a shitty diet, you will lose weight and feel better by switching to a vegan lifestyle.

...

If you're overweight and have a shitty diet, you will lose weight and feel better by switching to a [whatever] lifestyle.

Why? Because you're starting to invest time in your health and you're starting to learn a thing or two about nutrition. Being a slob vs. starting to become health conscious, huge step forward.

What's the best diet out there?

Hard to say, I honestly doubt there's a "one size fits all" solution.

Something that works great for a pro athlete might not be a good choice for someone who has diabetes or a heart condition and the other way around.

What I'm trying to say is that in my opinion, adopting any of the diets that have been mentioned in this thread would be a decent starting point if you think they represent a good fit for you. I'm pretty sure most people who earn a living on the Interwebz have a shitty lifestyle and by choosing a healthier diet, you're at least acknowledging that your current lifestyle sucks and that something needs to change.

I'm not a vegetarian, I'm not a vegan and I'm not too thrilled about the paleo lifestyle either. I'm just a guy who loves to read nutrition-related stuff and put that knowledge to good use, balance FTW!

Basic arithmetic knowledge + reading labels = EPIC WIN

Haha, I should have realised that nutrition is another political topic. Oops, didn't mean to troll y'all.

Thanks for the answers - it's helped me think through it a bit more, and my answer is: I'm going to split test.

Try one type of meal for a couple of weeks, then try something else, see how I feel.

The meals I'm gonna test out are:

1. hardboiled egg + tuna

2. Porridge + fruit

And see what happens. I'll rebalance my diet elsewhere during the day to make sure it all evens out as well.

Thanks for the answers!

Yeah they do just considerably less.
Exactly my point. Natural sugars do not spike insulin as much as processed sugars will. Second, there is no evidence to say that consuming fruit late at night will lead to fat storage.

Also, just wanted to +1 a protein shake. I normally take my Casein shake two hours before bed and it keeps me full throughout the entire night.

I like low-fat cottage cheese on pineapple or some other type fruit. OR mixed nuts with alot of water. Don't underestimate filling up on water before you start eating. You'll eat less and still fill full.

do you workout?

curd fills your stomach and has proteins that work over a longer time period. (casein)

also two eggs + tuna in the pan is king

Not enough - I run a couple of times a week, and like weight training, but really struggling to find a place to fit it in regularly. It needs to be after 8pm, and there are no gyms round here open that late, plus house / garden too small for a decent home workout.

Moving house in a few weeks though, which will make that stuff easier.

Yeah sorry you are a vegan, the rest of us are not. Haters going to hate douche bag. Vegans don't know what the fuck they are talking about.
lol he didn't even mention anything about being vegan or not eating meat lol

m0rtal, you should post the video of a girl that only eat raw watermelons, oranges and other fruits. She should be out of shape because of all the sugar...

Firstly, way to argue your point. Wait, what point?

Secondly, never brought up veganism. Simply said it doesn't make sense to deprive the body of its primary fuel source, which seems like a logical argument.

Thirdly. I think I'm a little more qualified than a 215lbs fatty like you.

Fourthly, you trimmed down 15 lbs and you're qualified to give advice? Are you kidding me? You sound like a 16 year old kid who's proud of the fact he just learned to tie his shoe laces.

I lost almost 50 lbs. last year. You're right, I must not know what I'm talking about. I eat as much food as a I want and don't deprive myself and never feel hungry. And guess what, I barely exercise (not that this is a good thing, I'm working on it - it's just that people think you need exercise to actually trim down).

SO yeah, everyone listen to the 6'2 215 lbs fatty who dropped 15 lbs all of last year. He knows what he's talking about. He'll point you in the right direction. Will also increase your anger levels LOL

Low carb + high fiber is the way to go. Like a chicken/tuna salad with vinegar dressing.

If it's low-gi and low-cals I'm actually thinking a midnight snack could be better for weight loss by minimizing "starvation mode" and perhaps stopping you from pigging out at breakfast the next day.

Make yourself a meat-shake. Blend sausage, ground beef, steak, etc. Add 3 tbsp of salt, and 2 cups of ranch dressing to taste. Serve in glass with mini Vienna Sausages placed around rim. Eat at breakfast for a great way to start your day. Enjoy.

Not looking to get into an argument here, but you can live your entire life without ever eating a gram of carbohydrate (your body will synthesize them from amino acids via gluconeogenesis).

Can't live without protein or fat, though.

Eating at 6pm is absolutely ridiculous. I just don't understand why people in this continent like to eat that early. In pretty much every other continent people have dinner at 8-9pm with some countries like Spain and Southern France eating sometimes at 10-11 (although I think that's way too late).

I tested different dinner times myself and I realized that 8-9pm was the perfect time for dinner (if you're planning on going to bed between 12-2AM. I'll usually have a snack around 4-5pm (muffin and fruit or something like that).

No human being can have dinner at 6pm and not eat anything till midnight. That's 6 fucking hours! Of course you're gonna be hungry as fuck before going to bed.

Optimal schedule for me is: Breakfast 8-9AM... Lunch 12-1PM... Snack 4-5PM... Dinner 8-9PM

Nothing to argue about because I never said not to eat any fat or protein ;)

But in short - if you eat enough calories from high carb foods you will easily meet your protein and fat requirements so even if what you say is true (I don't know) it's kinda irrelevant :/
