Standing Desk?

I'd highly recommend getting one. I got mine a little over 1 year ago and I haven't looked back. It's great for mixing up your routine and it keeps me more alert throughout the day.

I don't stand constantly, only around 2 hours/day tops, but that's enough to make a difference for me. Also yes, get one that will lift independently on both sides, as to not make it crooked, e.g. if you have more weight on one side than on the other (monitor etc.)

I have this and I love it:

Also make sure it's stable. Nothing worse than a wobbly table

Link?

Do any of these remember both the standing and sitting positions? That would be cool.

^the GeekDesk that Tangy recommended seems to do that. It's too bad they're on backorder...

I am going to build a stand up desk in my office across one of the empty walls. Does any body have any recommendations on how tall it should be? I'm thinking the height of my elbow when when standing. 41"-42" inches.

I used a DIY rigged standing desk for a while this summer and you're going to need to play around with it a bit.

Start with elbow height when standing straight up and go from there. You'll find that you do a LOT of shifting around all day; you'll need a foot rest for sure (to rest one foot on while standing) and you'll probably find that you lean on the desk from time to time. Your usage patterns will determine the exact final desk height that you need to be comfortable.

Are you just bolting the thing to the wall? Probably a lot cheaper than getting an adjustable desk...

Well I have two work benches that are on opposite sides of the room from each other. I want to build a stand up that connects them. The stand up portion is going to take up the whole back wall (a little more than 10' long).

I'm gonna go to Hdepot tonight (open on holiday? maybe - hopeso) with the mesurements and have everything cut there. Plyword / 4x4 for legs (that will actually sit on top of the existing benches) and 2x4 for frame.

i have certainly thought about this a lot...i try to get up and walk around every hour or so. However there are times when i sit for 8 hours straight.

A standing desk could be a bad idea because standing in one spot for too long causes varicose veins. This is particularly true if you're a woman.

I've been very interested in the treadmill desk for a long time, but never wanted to make a $500 commitment for a simple desk with long legs. Sitting for too long makes me get sleepy. Blah!

This is broscience. Standing in the same position without moving your legs for long periods is certainly a risk factor for developing varicosities in the legs, but it is not a cause. Age, heredity, fitness level and diet play more of a role in this than length of time standing does.

Even if what you said was true, you can simply weigh the risk of developing varicose veins (generally considered a cosmetic issue unless the varicosities are severe) with the risk of developing clots, weight gain, etc. that come with sitting for the same period.

I would also say that if you believe you are going to stand for long periods without moving your legs while working at a standing desk, you probably haven't used one. I was shifting and changing positions every couple of minutes during the month or so that I worked standing up, and I found that I was a lot more open to walking around and taking breaks when I worked standing than when I work sitting.

I've been thinking of redneck engineering a standing work area. For right now, a box sitting on top of my desk with my laptop sitting on top of the box is working well. :P

Haha, I'm already using itty bitty chair for monitor height. I had a nerve pinch in my back few weeks ago and i stopped joking around with how i sit all day. If I don't find a standing table under $100 soon I will just use boxes, extra support or cut the extra computer table and make higher one out of it. I'm resourceful enough not to give much money for something so trivial.

Glad to see you're still using yours. :) Here's ours if you want to go real ghetto

Oh hell yes, I need this.

I am only considering the stand up because I don't like the fact that I sit all day and lay at night. I've spent very little time on my feet in the past year. There is no way in fuxk that I would want to fuxking jogwalkrun at the same time. Fuck the health benefits and fuck jogging.

Went with 41.5 inches. 10 ft long. I new to modify the braces on the legs and run another strip of plywood for a sudo self but over all stoked about trying it out tomorrow.

Well I'm hesitant to move the big setup over. Gonna work with the laptops for a few weeks before I fully commit. Either that or go out and buy two more 27" monitors and a used newegg setup. Not sure yet probably gonna wait on that and stick with the MacBook for the stand up.

I owned a retail store for a year in which I had to stand all day at my laptop, 6 days a week. I didn't recognise any benefits, I'd even say that I was less productive. Seems like a bit of a fad to me.
