Standing Desk?

I'm looking for the opposite. Maybe something that reclines. Or maybe a desk bed. You know, I wanna relax. I know Herman Miller makes a reclining desk, but it doesn't recline enough for me.

I've a treadmill desk and highly recommend a standing/treadmill desk.

Sick

I've got plans to build a standing desk with stair stepper setup..walking around is cool and all but if I can work and train for climbing mountains at the same time, total winrar! Already tested the typing component, surprisingly easy.

Tried it for 2 weeks. Legs got very sore. Definitely keeps you alert.

Thread a while back about desk chairs & another about how sitting will kill you. I now set an alarm to get up every 25 min (basically like pomodoro). Also, am now using a chair that leans back / has a lot more movement. Back no longer hurts.

Ideal is probably the adjustable sitting / standing desk.

Come on guys, sitting isn't going to fucking kill you. Tibetan monks sit 6 hours everyday for 70 years and they seem just fine.

But you can always an "air desk"

I bought a treadmill desk awhile back and duplicated my entire 4 monitor setup on it in another room of the house. Turns out the one I bought was a total piece of shit. I forget which one it was, but the treadmill was loud as a mother fucker and the tread part didn't move smoothly etc. Add that to the fact that there's already a MAJOR "learning curve" to getting used to one of these things, and I wasn't off to a great start. Then we moved shortly after that, and I just threw the thing in the trash rather than hassle with moving it.

I have read some of the studies that say that sitting all day takes many years off of your life, and they seem totally legit. I don't understand the physiology involved, but the gist of it is that it shortens your lifespan even if you do a shitload of exercise when you're not working (which I do).

So I've had this in the back of mind for awhile now and keep meaning to look in to it further. I didn't mind the slow 2mph walk - I could type and work etc. just fine. Maybe there is a high-end unit out there that would work - the one I bought just felt like a rinky dink piece of shit that constantly distracted me.

A standing desk setup could work too. It's too bad all of these "alternative" setups are so modern looking - they look pretty shitty in my french chateau styled home lol

I still have the extra badass computer and 4 monitors ready to setup somewhere. I guess I should probably look in to trying another standing setup. Hmm...

A standing desk with a variable height that's effortlessly adjusted is the best.

When I'm in the zone, I enjoy standing. Keeps me focused and lets me do some minor pacing.

But often I just feel like sitting down and fucking around the rest of the time. Another solution is to keep leisure and work stations separate.

My place of employment tried to get us to use standing desks, but the standing desk is an abysmal failure if you're working on someone else's ASP (non-.NET) codebase, I've found.

The first week will really suck, but your back will thank you for it.

Calling Turbolapp.

This has been discussed here quite a bit before.

been thinking about a standing setup (would build my own) for awhile. I can't sit still for shit i get up and pace fucking circles around my house without even realizing it. I feel like a standing desk would help me be at the computer with out "wandering off" as much, but for those who have them...

How difficult do you find tasks like photoshop, coding, etc? I feel like i would struggle with that a little bit and find myself having to take the laptop and sit down to do it.

I "converted" a regular computer desk into a standing desk with some hillbilly engineering.

I put the monitor up on the hutch part of the desk so that the top of the monitor is at eye-level. I removed the slide-out keyboard and put it on top of a 16 inch riser I placed on top of the desk, which puts the keyboard just below elbow level. (riser = plastic storage box).

I set this up just to see if I could work this way. But now that I have everything adjusted to the correct height, I have no reason to actually buy a desk now. I work this way roughly 3 and 4 hours at a time for the last 3 months now.

The only down side is if you spend 5 or 6 hour a day just standing your feet will start to go numb. You need to take breaks and walk around a little every hour or so or just spend some time sitting.

When I first started working this way the soles of my feet went numb for several days after about a week because I neglected giving them a walking or sitting break.

Don't buy a pre-made treadmill desk - the ones I've seen are over-priced junk.

Get a quality treadmill and turn it into a treadmill desk.

At a bare minimum, you just need a treadmill and a SurfShelf ($40).

I use mine for any work I need to do, including some coding, at 3 mph - How I Put Together My Treadmill Desk

i have been thinking of making the change to a standing desk as well...it seems it is getting popular these days...i need it for the back...sitting all day is killing our bodies

The problem is that last picture pretty much sums up how they all end up looking. I couldn't bare to have something that messy and crappy looking in my office. It would be counterproductive.

Thinking of shifting to a Standing desk to work for maybe 2-3 hours a day standing.

Any WFers tried doing that?
I know turbo uses a walking/running desk, but has anybody else actually tired working on a Standing desk.

Heard mixed things about it, but havent met anyone who have been using it for work.

Theoretically, this is should be healthier than sitting on my arse all day though.
One drawback is that I won't be able to hump my secretary on the desk.

Thoughts, ideas, Pics?

You need an adjustable desk. I would think buying one that only stands is a terrible idea. I don't know if you ever did a retail job when you were a teenager, but it would feel like that. Your feet and back would hurt like crazy after a few hours, every day.

I had a hydraulic desk at one of my jobs years ago. Those were nice to switch it up a bit. But in the end, with my back issues, standing for long periods aggravates it.

I'm bringing this thread back to life.

I'm seriously thinking of getting a standing desk. Only problem is I don't want to shell out $3k for a high tech one because I don't even know if I will like it.

I'm thinking of going with a cheap $300 one from Amazon: [ame=http://www.amazon.com/Safco-1929CY-Adjustable-Stand-Up-Workstation/dp/B001MS70Z2/ref=pd_sim_sbs_hg_1]Safco 1929CY Adjustable Height Stand-Up Workstation, 29w x 19-3/4d x 49h, Cherry PVC Top: Amazon.com: Home & Kitchen[/ame]

Anyone has experience with any of these bad boys? Did it really make a difference in your life/health/productivity during the day?
