I was gonna start a new thread, because over the last few weeks I've been getting more and more pleased with my Mac. Plus I knew it would descend into a fanboi vs fanboi pissing contest anyway, so why not carry one on?!

Right, I've only been a Mac owner for about 18 months or so, maybe more, maybe less, I'm not entirely sure.

First I hate Apple. HATE Apple. I also hate MS, so don't worry fanboys, I hate them both. :) I don't own an iPhone (never will), don't own an iPod, iPad or anything by Apple apart from my MacBook.

I bought it because I was not going to be forced into a new "better OS" (Vista/7), after using XP, just because I wanted a better computer.

So I worried about software. Damn I have to get the adobe suite and what not, I thought. I researched software and felt I could find everything for the Mac that I used on XP. So enough deliberation, I took the plunge and moved.

It took me a few weeks to get going:

"What programs are open?"
"Why do they seem to stay open when I click the X?"
"What's this menu bar all about?"
"How do I edit the registry?"
"How do forward delete?"
"Where's the hash key?"

Eventually I just learned most the shortcuts and got the super wonderful Quicksilver. Because of QS I then made the dock tiny and had it auto-hide. cmd+space ftw. :)

Then I upgraded to Snow Leopard. Nice. Slightly quicker, smaller footprint, scrolling has momentum like an iPhone and I can use 3 fingers to drag and drop. :D

Then I went on a software buying spree, became more adventurous and this is where my conversion started becoming a bit fanboy like! I was thinking the other day, that as of late, I simply couldn't go back to windows, because this software would be too much. I really couldn't live without it.

I was recommended Launchbar 5 instead of Quicksilver and was told even the Quicksilver developer recommends it. (He does)

The programs is so good it still makes me wet. It's like Quicksilver on crack and has too many functions to list, some are gimicky and some are fucking brilliant.

LaunchBar 5

Then I discovered Art Text. Now, I'm not a Photoshop user, I've lived and breathed Fireworks from the year dot and have barely touched PS. I don't do photos and if I do graphics it's for the 'net. Hence Fireworks.

Anyway, this little program caught my eye and it's now essential. I can create buttons, text, icons, and fiddly shit in seconds. It's not just a time saver, but the way it works solves lots of problems. It saves to most file types (including pdf - default) so allows everything to also go straight to print. I adore this program. I find myself playing with it when bored it's so good!

Art Text - Version 2

I later discovered Pixelmator. This was from a friend's recommendation. He's like Mr Photoshop and seems to think if you have a computer with Photoshop and a decent notepad on it, you can control the world. I don't agree, but then I don't know it.

So, I bought it. I don't really know how to describe it (because I don't use PS) but it's like an easy PS - I imagine! Now I know easy for most means Fisherprice and Toys 'r Us, because afterall that's the bestest insult a Windows user has, but it's just incredible.

I love the interface, the functions and the way it seems to do everything I could ever want from a photo editing program and at the cost of a night out. I opened it and accomplished things that used to take me ages in mere moments. For me this was like someone had turned a light on in a dark room.

I also purchased Flux. For those that haven't heard of this it's like Dreamweaver. Well it's like Dreamweaver should be. I write, or did write, standards compliant code. Dreamweaver used to make me want to kill.

Editors like DW didn't speed up my work, they slowed it down. I'd get stuck trying to do something and just go to code view. That's of course if I wasn't working in Notepad++ in the first place. ;)

So, I do have CS5 on my Mac, but bought this after being told it makes DW look a bit, urhm, shit. And it does I believe. To be fair I haven't even opened DW since upgrading to Snow Leopard and moving to CS5, so it could be everything Flux is. The code it creates is nice, the way it works is dreamy and it supports HTML5 and is standards compliant.

To be completely honest though I can't stand writing HTML anymore and barely edit web stuff in a Wysiwyg editor, so I can't hand on heart say it's the best thing since sliced bread, because, well, I don't eat sliced bread.

The Escapers - Flux

Obviously I could continue to wax lyrical about software and talk about the virtues of some of the great productivity shit I've discovered, Vitamin-R, SelfControl, Concentrate, Lumina, Things, The Hitlist, but that's stupid.

I really just wanted to sound off this Saturday, while I drank my coffee, about how, as an anti-fanboi and Apple hater, I would now find the move back to Windows too painful to contemplate. And, as I hope I made clear, this is not completely down to the "retardedly simple OS" (Who actually wants a more complicated OS?) but some of the absolutely cock achingly good software I've had the fortune to have used.

Terminal and Panic - Coda - One-Window Web Development for Mac OS X
...and many more

I also prefer a user friendly interface, which is why I don't like linux distros...also I like how mac apps all have a standardized interface, makes using programs more efficient if they all have the same interface style.

right now I only use Mac, but will be adding a Windows machine soon, after I get a 27" iMac though.

Yeah, if you regularly edit text files on ftp, Coda is the one. The whole app is just beautiful. I find the snippets feature really useful too if I'm making pages from scratch. Love the plugin support too, makes this text editor very versatile:- Panic - Coda - Developer

I've used Windows for over 15 years and Mac for about 5. Prefer the Mac to the fullest, better productivity if you make use of expose/spaces etc. The other apps on a Mac are so much better compared to Windows counter parts.

Bad point is, most webmaster tools like scrapers/blasters etc are Windows based. But thanks to Parallels and Unity this makes it a breeze, even though I hate the sight of Windoze nowadays.

HP Envy 15 i7 or Macbook Pro 15 i7 - Comparison

I know it's shameless self promotion, but if you compare the two, the HP Envy costs less, weighs less, has better specs for pretty much everything (Processor, RAM, Video Card, Resolution, etc.), and is cheaper.

PC > Mac

Yeah it may have better specs on paper but hardware is limited to the power of the operating system. When you buy a new computer, do you take into consideration the performance?

Here is a benchmark test of the MBP vs the HP Envy 15

Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch (Core i7) - Benchmark Test Results

Mac > PC

I had a MBP for a few weeks in the summer, then I dropped it about 10 feet and went back to my normal set up on PC.

Just got a totally new set up. Two 27" LCD displays and a MacBook pro 15 2.66ghz model with some extras I won't go into for time.

Anyway I still have my Windows 7 Dell XPS 15" which is a great computer and two monitors that I put away for now.

First of all the 27" mac displays are worth every penny of the $1,100 I paid. They're fucking fantastic and wouldn't switch back or even add my old ones to them. If I wanted more screens I'd simply get a few more.

The MBP I find I'm using more and more over my old Dell. I think the Dell could be a bit quicker is browsing and such. But when it comes to editing code (like God was talking about) and generally even browsing the internet, writing in Word, etc the MBP is so much sharper and smoother it's hard not to use.

Now I use the Dell mainly for downloading files I won't need for my MBP, downloading music and to run AIM on so I don't get too many things popping up as I'm trying to work.

If you're on a budget I say there's no reason to go MBP over PC... you can get the same speed and programs pretty much for half the price. But there is that something about the MBP that makes me use it... maybe it's the smoothness of applications or the great screen. Regardless if you don't mind laying down some cash I find I'm much more productive and happy with the MBP and 27" displays.

This.

Use them affiliate monies and join the cool kids with macs, stop being cheap. Bunch of hobos in here...

also fuck me for posting in this old ass thread, guy above me bumped it!

PC FTW, Macs are for fags. OMG so much eaiser to use Mac!! WTF ever, learn to use a computer and you wouldn't be such helpless bitches. Learning to use a PC, Windows or Linux, isn't exactly the hardest thing ever, and you'll save a boat loads of cash.

But it's cool, keep getting it stuck in your ass so you can feel cool. You probably like soccer too so I guess that's par for the course.

linux blows, use BSD

This coming from an asshole who hasn't giving a good Linux distro the time of day, because if you had you'd see you can do nearly everything you can do on Windows on Linux.

Don't take this out of context, for the most part I still like Windows 7 better than Ubuntu Linux, but I give credit to Ubuntu for having come so far in the last 2 years that's it's not that far off (the 10.10 release is the best yet). As a web developer Linux is a better environment to do web development on than Windows by far.

Now if only some popular Windows apps would port to Linux, Windows would hardly be an issue.

I dont see why some people pay so much for old hardware that the macs got when you can buy a PC with much better hardware even cheaper.

How did you connect 2 monitors to a mbp?
