I have 3k to spend, and I spent it on something better than a Mac.

Hear hear.

Anyone whose argument against Macs is based on one of the following loses from the beginning

1) Per hour of computing, we are talking literally about a difference of price in pennies. Is there anything people (especially professionals) use more than their computers? Should we all drive fucking KIAs because they are cheapest? Cheaper != better.

2) Because Apple has mastered marketing, that has nothing to do with the actual product.

3) If simple meant can't do shit then this would be valid. But simple for macs just means they make actual sense. A bunch of bloatware does not make sense. Having to install printer drivers for current printers when a mac can detect and autoconfigure the same printer over bonjour does not make sense (case in point, my new hp all in one wireless printer).

1) Anyone who uses "money shouldn't be an issue you use a computer all the time" has lost from the beginning. Expensive!=quality.

2) It's fair that good marketing doesn't mean bad computer, but great marketing means overly expensive computer

3) Bloatware--not true; install Windows yourself rather than buying pre-made. Problem solved. And printer drivers? Even if this were true (it's not, my PC recognizes everything I throw at it, including my Droid on the day it came out), are you so lazy that you'll spend thousands to save you seconds?

Really, my beef with Macs comes down to laziness. When I was in college, several of my friends used Macs. They would eat Ramen to scrimp and save, but when it came time for a new computer, a Mac it had to be! And what do college students need a computer to do? Go online, write papers. Hmmm... So even if Macs are better (and let's be clear, they're not), most people don't use them to any potential.

And never use "based on Unix" as a pro. UNIX IS FREE DON'T BUY A MAC TO GET IT.

1/ Feel the difference in quality between an MBP and almost any single laptop. There's no comparison. They're so solid; I've not felt anything that comes close on build quality. Maybe some of the Lenovos/IBMs, but nothing else. My last Viao cost me more than my Mac and my Mac is quiet, lasts for about 6 hours on battery and has never missed a beat. The Vaio was nice, but got very hot, fans were always on and was not in the same league. (Along with about 7 or 8 other topend laptops I've owned.)

2/ Marketing shouldn't even come into the argument. Most of us work in marketing, so we're far from suckers. We buy because they are good. I've been using PCs since my old 386 and have only been using a mac for about a year. One of my pcs now runs Linux and the other, gets turned on about once a month. I simply enjoy the ease of the computing experience.

3/ A clean install of windows is pretty bloated. There's plenty of MS shit in there that most people like to remove. Also, many things often require a tweak or two as well. I very much doubt anyone installs it and tweaks nothing. Then you have to install an AV, Firewall, Acrobat, Winrar, FF and what not, as well as going to msconfig and stopping various programs booting on start-up. (Forgetting the time spent installing everything and unchecking various Ask and Google Toolbar checkboxes.)

Anyway, I don't need to convert anyone. I'm not a fan boy, I certainly wasn't. I now just get annoyed by people who know nothing about Macs regurgitating various groundless claims ad infinitum.

For me I'm just pleased I no longer have to spend so much time on my computer updating shit and keeping things running, as well as the formatting or rolling back using Ghost or something. It's just a relief to be frank. I got it out the box, I turned it on. It worked. Life is most definitely easier now.

You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to -God- again.

But...but...1 BUTTON MOUSE?!

no, a lot of people think apple products are stupid because they are simple and "made for idiots". those people also think apple is all marketing and being cool.

But then all the real hackers and power users that I know use either osx or linux. And being honest, linux is not for 99% of people and their computing needs. I use linux, windows, and os x every single day, and if i could only have one it would definitely be a mac.

Linux Mint 10 > Mac OSX

If you must have the Mac OSX look & feel, then download the Macbuntu theme after installing Linux Mint 10.

Linux is a shit kernel. Go real unix or go home. The only "Unix-like" OS that gets a thumbs up from me is BSD, specifically OpenBSD.

I bought my first Macbook Pro a couple weeks ago to see what all the "hype" is about. I have been impressed with the solid build quality and battery life so far, but that is about it. I still prefer to work in Windows 7 and often have it running on a virtual machine in a seperate "space" to use a few programs not offered on OSX. I never had the spyware/adware/virus infestation issues or other windows problems that some complain about as their reason for using a Mac.

I will give it a couple more weeks to see if I adjust to it more. I would probably keep it as a Windows notebook if it had a dedicated right click button and the Fn/Ctrl keys were swapped.

If I decide to get rid of the Macbook Pro, I will probably replace it with a Sony Vaio Z even though it is more expensive. It is one of the few smaller Windows notebooks that offers a resolution over 1366x768 and doesn't feel like a really cheap piece of crap.

just had this debate with myself and grabbed a Dell XPS quad-core w/ 8GB ram, hi-res LCD, etc. for Windows development and virtualization mostly. unfortunately no anti-glare screen, which is very annoying.

will be grabbing a Macbook Pro (hi res, anti-glare) for web development and design soon.

share work files using Dropbox and have the best of both worlds.

If you don't mind overpaying for brand than apple, for reasonable people - PC no doubts.

Set it up for 2 fingers for right click (You can also set up bottom right corner click as right click) and 2 fingers for scrolling - with inertia, 4 for exposé, 3 for back and forward. I'd also suggest avoiding windows so you have to learn shortcuts and what not.

When I first got my mac I found myself going into a virtual machine all the time, like as in more than in OSX; I was too far out of my comfort zone. I felt I knew OSX and knew that I'd made a stupid purchase. Then I went on some fanboys forums for help and also just went cold turkey so I had to learn. The rest is history.

What progs do you need out of curiousity? (I am genuinely curious, not being an idjut.)

this thread is full of retards, and all of you who claim to be internet marketers but are mad at Apple for being marketing pros probably are a bunch of broke asses.

Buy $500 laptop with 5+ hour battery life, install Fedora + Gnome + Chrome /thread

I don't like the island key bs on macs, I don't like the sharp edges, I don't like the OS, I don't like the missing right mouse button, I don't like fucking around with compile switches to install things, I don't like overpaying for hardware, and anyone who plays games from a laptop is an idiot.

I love my iPod (minus it not remembering where I'm at in audio books when I want to listen to music), hate my iPhone, and hate Apple with a passion. I also haven't liked Windows since W2K.

If I need 24+ gig of ram, dual quad cores, or huge storage space, I'd SSH or stream from a server. Oh wait, I have a 5.4TB NAS, 2.7TB NAS, and a bunch of dual quad core servers sitting in the basement on a 100mbit fiber link, and more in datacenters. If I want to watch movies, play games, or waste time, my 360 does a fucking great job at it.

Having a mac would not make my life easier, period.

I forgot, what type of idiot company decides that a delete AND backspace shouldn't exist on the same keyboard grrrr

a Mac Pro with those crazy specs will easily be comparable to any workstation PC with equivalent specs. You're dealing in professional level computers at this point, not some gamer PC with a shitsock dispenser for WoW players. On top of that, you won't be able to get equivalent performance on one task from those two computers on your standard Windows install, since it's not meant for distributed computing. Guess what, you'd need some form of UNIX meant for cluster computing, as well as a fibre channel card in each for those two PCs to share tasks.

Hahaha, so what you're saying is, the only way to get this performance is to buy the PC with OSX on it from Apple? And that every custom-built Windows PC is for WoW players?

I would like to see these benchmarks that you are talking about Mac performing better than Windows on a high-spec machine.

I've got news for you, Macs use the same hardware as all the other big companies. That's right, they use Foxconn and Intel just like Dell, HP, Sony, and everyone else, so you're argument is invalid. They use the same hardware, throw it in a cute chassis, and sell it for double.

Now you're talking about using Mac for distributed computing. Did you know there is something called Linux, which is completely FREE? I also don't see Apple offering any fibre channel cards with their systems.

The only thing Macs are good for is music recording (not mixing) because of their low-latency sound card drivers, but then again, you can just use Linux instead and save $1,000.

I don't really hate Apple but it's all these people going around saying that it's better just because they know nothing about computers really rustles my jimmies.

They aren't broke they just don't like getting ripped.

You have to press shift+backspace to get it to delete before the carot. Had to Google a bit when I was using a classmate's mac. But yeah, it's a bit annoying having to do an extra keypress.
