I have seen this done with small businesses in Germany.
I should actually say been done to small businesses.

Generic domain .. something like "mycity.de" (my brain is on strike right now)
Lots of subdomains "hamburg.mycity.de" etc..

They would walk around and ask businesses to sign up for "your business page in our directory" and take something like 500$ for the privilege.

Very interesting idea, but if I understand this correctly there is very little value for the advertisers - the directory owner is basically taking advantage of their interweb ignorance, right?

Why in the world would you think there's little value in targeted niche traffic?

As a directory, you're in a great position to do some really broad advertising (cheap and in bulk) to put traffic on your directory that none of your advertisers would EVER be able to pay for.

Here's 2 strategies I'm using to build value and drive traffic to advertisers(and remember I've only been doing this for a little over a month)

1. I offer a directory.com rewards card to save money with my 'featured' advertisers.

2. I've already had a money-giveaway contest that went really well and earned me a high paying sponsor.

So, sorry to burst your bubble... no need to fuck over the advertiser dude. Directories are valuable and people understand what they are, which makes it an easy sell for you.

How are you driving the traffic to the site? is it all PPC?

If the site is only a month old obviously it isn't getting much if any natural traffic. How many daily visitors do you tell your advertisers you receive?

I've getting some good PPC traffic, and have gotten a few jackpots from YouTube and Myspace, but a majority is coming from offline advertising.

I've (and by 'I've' I mean paid someone else) already delivered 500,000 fliers to local apartments and HOAs, business carded over 10,000 cars, got a great press release mention in the local paer, just bought some ads in a local movie theater, and am doing a coop with another local portal.... so... the traffic is steadily on the rise.. right now between 150-500 hits per day.

And I don't bother lying to the advertisers that we're new, or that we're ALL THAT, but my rates are about 5x less than Yellowpages, and what I offer is about 10x more valuable and targeted.

Just don't be scared to go out there and do things to get people to your website.

It's a good idea. I started out my online ventures doing this type of stuff, it does make money. It's a good backup to offset volatile affiliate earnings too.

hey correct ad, ever thought of building a small forum to increase activity and create a community environment to attach this type of directory too. Would probably work super well in some niches

whats the ballpark cost for the scaper? might be interested in doin this locally for a niche and could probably use one. not certain but considering venturing into this, so i'm jus curious

Is it better to go with the local niche directory rather than a local shopping or business directory?

been there done that time to do it again

i was doing this in 2005 but not niche speciffic its dead easy as you can get all the listings from any directory and slowly build your own
great thread and topical as google is trying to get local this thread has inspierd me to get going again

Local192

and if you wanted to be a real sneaky prick....you could scrape all of yellowpages listings for your niche and add them to your directory and then send them all an invoice saying "bla bla bla if you wish to renew your listing please pay $$$"

LOL

Hmm... this seems so saturated in Europe.

Saturated, fuck those people over there are getting crazier by the minute lol.

I'm still having a very hard time thinking this could ever get that saturated, well maybe because I'm not doing it exactly like everyone else here because after looking at the whole make money with a directory through advertising model, I realized there are very few web 2.0 directories and good ones that offer value at that.

So that is my goal with this, make a good solid web 2.0 directory, have it automated, make it offer value to all advertisers, and then have it repeatable over and over again for any number of niche markets.

All sticking to an initial startup budget of $700, this could get difficult somewhere along the way haha I hate budgets.

Well, with "saturated" I mean this:

Alone in NORTHERN Switzerland, I know at least 3 major directories/local search engines doing this.
local.ch, search.ch,..... here we go:
  • Swissguide.ch - business search
  • Help.ch – search for companies
  • Suchfuchs.ch – search for companies, regional + official data
Directories
  • eFinder.ch – e-businesses and internet companies
  • Webliste.ch – wwwPages, Companies, Jobs, zip codes, flea market, encyclopedia, trade register
At least 2 "event" based sites covering every event/disco/street party, etc..

And that is just the big ones, there is tons of smaller sites as well.
meh..

I'd be surprised if you were getting swindled by the guy distributing the fliers. He could easily cut corners (eg only canvas 1/2 the cars in a lot) and drop the rest in a dumpster.

nah - I'm seeing a 5% conversion from flier to site, which is very good.

plus I'm paying kids from church and it only takes 20 minutes or so to do.
