ok, so joomla, esyndicat or dynaportal - which one is better? I need a hybrid directory/blog platform ...

i'm having a pretty easy time setting up joomla + moset tree, with the right formating and plugins its easy to seo the shit outta your directory too. right now i'm still developing and its formated as cityniche.com/city/nichecategories/ which should help boost some attention while shown on the serps.

This was a great post. I intend to give it a go.

Probably going to have some coding done by an outside source. The esyndicat reviews aren't that great in here.

I've started a blog/community directory for an area here. I've got a bunch of restaurant reviews and keep the blog updated with content but I'm unsure what to do next to monetize. Should I let the restaurants and shops keep their free listings and try to upsell (more in depth blog reviews, subdomains, pictures, video, etc) or contact them and tell them I'm removing their listing unless they pay $15 a month or whatever...but this sounds kind of shady. What would you guys do? Gotten some local advertising in the past but haven't really gotten my act together to put together a media kit and send out to the locals.

Good blog.

I wouldn't do anything drastic like threaten to remove posts... just come up with a good sales proposition.

Some Examples:

Offer to have your "professional photographer" take pictures of their business.

Put a google map on the post.

Have your "graphic design team" create a web banner that will be placed on your blog under appropriate posts and categories.

Maybe you can even do like a video critic of dining there.

The list of things you can do for money is endless.

Good luck.

Guys anyone in here done this for more than a year? I'm wondering what will happen long term...Were ramping up multiple directories and the cash is literally pouring in. 600/yr. plus 500 for 'professional photography.' Lucrative doesn't quite cover it. If any one wants more granular details give me a shout.

Hi don't mean to bother, just wanted to know if the offer still stands? Any info would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Same here. I'd be interested in hearing more specific information. I'm about to get started on this. Waited until now, even though I read this thread over a month ago, because of outside time constraints. Can't wait to see how this works.

Been there done it. 3 words: Local is hardcore. Small shops and businesses dont go near online and often dont want to as they dont understand. The idea is great in theory but the reality takes ALOT of hard work and determination. Local also wants face to face so costs go through the roof when you have to drive 100 miles to the next town.
This sort of shit is for the really determined only. My advice stick to something you're passionate about if thats local then fine.

I agree with this comment. I've worked in local for a few years, and unless you can SELL you ain't gonna do shit.

That means phone calls, meetings, fixing the local restaurants computer while you're there... this is what's expected of you.

Since starting a local directory for my town, I get phone calls all the from people wanting a hell of a lot more than they've paid for (Top Google rankings for their site, free website updates, pc repair). Take this into consideration when starting your local site...

Has anyone tried this method with a smaller price tag? Since local shops will be very hard to hook, especially for such large amounts of money, what about offering them a listing at say $7.95/mo? You'll obviously need more signups to turn a good profit, but wouldnt your conversions be better with a lower price tag?

Too low and you turn them off.

I will give you an easy tip no one talks about: submission service. Scare the crap out of them (are you in Google?! In Yahoo?! SuperPages?! YellowPages?! MSN?! Ahhh!) and then charge them a submission service to all these sites. Once you have done enough submissions these guys (Google, Yahoo, etc) will treat you like a trusted source and the entire process becomes automated.

Maybe I should post this in a separate thread ...

That's a good idea. Call and discuss a regular directory listing, and try and upsell them the featured listing/category sponsor and with the featured listing, throw in some search engine and other directory submissions.

Any opinions on this "strategy"

Step 1. Make directory, include all biz in the niche
Step 2. Call each biz to "verify" their free listing info
Step 3. While calling, get the name of the decision maker and pitch your upgrades.
In your pitch mention there is a limited amount of featured listings and they need to jump on it now to secure the spot.

All these directories need to add some value to the user or the biz. Just having address+phone number+link is not going to cut it for a long term strategy.

If you are doing a niche, add FAQ pages about it and maybe even have some biz owners answer the questions for you. Write a few articles on how to pick the best shop to do biz with. Start a coupons newsletter(rss feed maybe) and email subscribers offers from the local biz shops. These extras also present an opportunity for upsell packages.

If you become a local authority site in a niche, the money will follow.

I programmed some custom software, designed made a scraper single-handed .Registered the domain Businesses-in.com : Business Directory for Canada and the US which I am adding to every day. The backend is almost complete which allows me to add banners / featured listings..etc and keep track of them for each city. The problem becomes writing unique content for each city and basically marketing it in places so far away from home. I was thinking about leasing opportunities where someone would pay a yearly fee and basically control a city and just sell sell sell. They could recoup the cost of the yearly fee in about 10 sales. Of course, this isn't done yet, but ideas ideas

Well I figured that I might as well give this a try. I've programmed, designed and basically filled this with 10 million businesses in the US and Canada single-handed. It's definitely coming along and when I finish the back-end to add banners / content /enhanced listings I will start to market it. I am going to focus on one city and try to increase the PR of that to start. I have about 1030 cities and can't very well market them all. I was thinking that anyone interested could pay a yearly fee and skip all the bullshit(design, programming,'scraping',new features..etc) that I am doing and get straight to marketing. They would login to the city they're leasing and have full control. I figure that any good sales person could pay for the yearly fee in about 10 sales. Anyways, lots of ideas in this area and I don't think it's something that will just go away. People need as many avenues to their business as they can get and this is just one more.

Sounds well thought out. I think you have the right idea on this, so you should go for it and see what happens.

Ok so after lurking here for quite some time I decided to give this a try.... The site is almost done and I am working on filling in the directory and tweaking a few things right now before I start trying to sell people on it.

I wanted you all to take a look and throw any suggestions you may have my way - this is the thread that inspired me to give this a shot so I figured I show what's come of it.

I look forward to any advice ya'll have.
