I've started a blog/community directory for an area here. I've got a bunch of restaurant reviews and keep the blog updated with content but I'm unsure what to do next to monetize. Should I let the restaurants and shops keep their free listings and try to upsell (more in depth blog reviews, subdomains, pictures, video, etc) or contact them and tell them I'm removing their listing unless they pay $15 a month or whatever...but this sounds kind of shady. What would you guys do? Gotten some local advertising in the past but haven't really gotten my act together to put together a media kit and send out to the locals.
Fyi the site is North Hills Buzz - North Hills Raleigh Information and News
Guys anyone in here done this for more than a year? I'm wondering what will happen long term...Were ramping up multiple directories and the cash is literally pouring in. 600/yr. plus 500 for 'professional photography.' Lucrative doesn't quite cover it. If any one wants more granular details give me a shout.

Been there done it. 3 words: Local is hardcore. Small shops and businesses dont go near online and often dont want to as they dont understand. The idea is great in theory but the reality takes ALOT of hard work and determination. Local also wants face to face so costs go through the roof when you have to drive 100 miles to the next town.
This sort of shit is for the really determined only. My advice stick to something you're passionate about if thats local then fine.
Has anyone tried this method with a smaller price tag? Since local shops will be very hard to hook, especially for such large amounts of money, what about offering them a listing at say $7.95/mo? You'll obviously need more signups to turn a good profit, but wouldnt your conversions be better with a lower price tag?
Too low and you turn them off.
I will give you an easy tip no one talks about: submission service. Scare the crap out of them (are you in Google?! In Yahoo?! SuperPages?! YellowPages?! MSN?! Ahhh!) and then charge them a submission service to all these sites. Once you have done enough submissions these guys (Google, Yahoo, etc) will treat you like a trusted source and the entire process becomes automated.
Maybe I should post this in a separate thread ...
pm you what? all the info is in this thread already. quit being a faggot trying to shill the shitty ebooks in your signaturehi everyone...i'm interested please pm me
Any opinions on this "strategy"
Step 1. Make directory, include all biz in the niche
Step 2. Call each biz to "verify" their free listing info
Step 3. While calling, get the name of the decision maker and pitch your upgrades.
In your pitch mention there is a limited amount of featured listings and they need to jump on it now to secure the spot.
All these directories need to add some value to the user or the biz. Just having address+phone number+link is not going to cut it for a long term strategy.
If you are doing a niche, add FAQ pages about it and maybe even have some biz owners answer the questions for you. Write a few articles on how to pick the best shop to do biz with. Start a coupons newsletter(rss feed maybe) and email subscribers offers from the local biz shops. These extras also present an opportunity for upsell packages.
If you become a local authority site in a niche, the money will follow.
