Ok, here's what I'm doing with this one. I recently moved to a moderate sized city just outside of Los Angeles. I picked up a good domain cityyellowpages.com and have set up a nice directory script (phpmydirectory is a great script for this. get a template and the coupon mod to upsell listings), filled it in with a lot of basic listings I scraped and added in a few featured businesses with extras to use as a selling point.
I did some basic SEO and now rank #1 in google for 'city yellowpages' and a few other terms.

Now, once the kids are back in school in a few weeks, I'm getting agressive in face to face meetings with local businesses. I plan on getting a nice polo shirt that says 'city yellowpages' some nice print material and my laptop and looking official. Most people don't realize that the term 'Yellow Pages' is generic. Use it in your domain - it gives you some weight when you talk with people.
I also purchased a bunch of local domains like 'citydoctors.com' 'citycarpetcleaners.com', etc. Really nice generic domains that are keyword rich. I threw up some templates and some nice basic content about each subject. I rank #1 for 'city physcian' already after only a week. Threw a few nice links to it.
Now I plan on going to all the local businesses within the niches I bought domains for and as an employee of the Yellow Pages from my city, I can offer a great domain with a website built with content that is now ranked #1 for the keywords people will use to find their business. The domain/site is for sale for $xxxx, and it includes a Free Featured listing on the Yellow Pages for 6 months. After that, I can hit them up for renewals, site maintenance, take photos of their store and add them to the yellowpages for a fee, etc.
Take good care of customers, they'll appreciate it, and pass along your name. Always ask them for other business owners they know that might be interested as well.

Hope this gives some more ideas to this exellent thread!

^^ Gee Andrew, I really loved YOUR thread, thanks for sharing - you really helped a lot :repuke:

Lol...what a fine contribution...thanks Andrew

MedicalHumor, I too thought of using a "yellowpages" name/domain, but thought it might get me in a shitload of trouble with the real yellow pages...so I'm glad you posted that...now I know I can do something somewhat similar.

Your plan is balls to the wall and sounds pretty solid...good luck with it

I really like your idea medicalhumor - it's very similar to my vision for this project. If I'm not mistaken, you're going to be using ideas from both the $100k and $200k threads. Not only having city niche directories, you're also going to sell businesses a domain/ site with a high ranking in Google? I think that's a great idea to have multiple sources of income from doing it this way.

Please keep us all informed on your progress. Good luck.

For my directory domain, would it be any better or worse to use citystatedirectory.com rather than just citydirectory.com? The same with individual niche domains - citystatedoctors.com rather than citydoctors.com? All of the domains with just using the city are taken, but as I add the state abbr. they all seem to be available. Now after seeing that one can legally use yellowpages in their name, I may consider going that route.

yeah Bacon, try to keep it as short as possible though. Even a .net would be fine if you could get cityyellowpages.net
If you live in a large city, try a yellowpages from a local area of that city. If you lived in Chicago, obviously chicagoyellowpages will be taken, but jolietyellowpages might be, or even chicago-yellowpages
If you use citystatedirectory, use the 2 letter abbreviation for the state to shorten it up.

Another tip, grab your local valupak mailers that you get in the mail and go through them. Find the local businesses that are advertising and go after them. Check the mailer to see which ones list a website and which don't and if they don't, try to sell them one as part of a package with the yp listing. Perceived value can be powerful.

great idea

assi9, just make sure there isn't already a cityyellowpages in your area and that you don't infringe on them, that's where you could run into trouble. But if you have an original name with the term yellowpages in it, you should be fine. In the US, 'Yellow Pages' is generic, but those of you in Canada might not be so lucky. I think that one is off limits for you.
