Where is the best place to stay for IM?

BThere are cheap areas where you can get an appartment for 300€ a month but nobody will speak English in those areas and you'll get stabbed in your first night.

You're entitled to your opinion about Berlin, but no matter where you live in Berlin (or Germany for that matter) people generally speak English.

And it's safe.

You're telling me Prenzlauerberg and Kreuzberg are dangerous?

Germany is a pretty shitty places to stay for affiliates (at least if you want to become a resident and declare German taxes). Lots of regulation, high taxes and the good places (like Munich or Starnberg) are pretty expensive and you can't compare them to world cities like Bankok, Singapore or NY.

This isn't true either. I have a residence permit that's good for a year (with the possibility to expand to 2 more years) and don't pay a dime in taxes to Germany.

If you want to become a citizen that's a different story.

I've lived in BKK, NYC and HK and can say that Berlin is up there with them, even if you don't add price to the equation.

I don't care if you hate Berlin but try to get your facts straight before you post.

I have also heard the Internet access is a bit spotty in Thailand, but I do not have much personal experience.

It can be on the islands but it's usually due to power cuts when you get bad rain.

I've been in Bangkok for the past 12 months using my own 4MB connection and the only time it's been down was when some electric box blew up in our street. When I lived in samui it probably went down twice a month for a few hours, nothing to worry about really.

Thailand is great but can't deal with visa runs.

Just don't do the minivan runs, hop on a plane to any other city in asia and make a weekend of it. It's only once every three months and flights are well cheap. Or do Thai language course 2 hours per week and you don't have to do visa runs at all. Or register a phantom company and get a work permit.

If its not all about money, then you should try the Balearic Islands!

Balearic Islands - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

First of all, its NOT that expensive outside the (europe) holiday saison, which
is from July to August. In fact, you can get a quality apartment or even a whole
house somewhat cheap.

Don't believe all the buzz about rich people there, it is totally different.
The Balrearics was always a goal for people who drop-out, because the
living is easy there and the climate is superior.

In the days of the english empire, the balearics was an important center
for the empire, because they used it for their offsea personal as a kind
of "climate back migration". What i mean? Well, if you was an english who
lived 20 years in india and then you moved back to england, you needed
some luck to survive the first 2 winters. No joke, the climate change was
and is a real danger. The special climate of the Balearics, a mix between
the europe and the african climate prepared people safely for the more
harsh north europe weather.

There are alot private house owners who like to rent their houses and apartments outside the saison.
Its even important because as house owner you want someone
in, first of course because the money but mainly, and most people did not
know that, because a closed house/apartment is not good for the
structure. The "standing" air and all in that climate is worse, you will find
your house invaded by ants next year and you need a month to remove the smell of bad air.

Its a bit work to get the feet in that but when you make it you really live in one of the best spots in the world.

The climate is perfect, not to hot, you can have fun and then you can do some work. And from west asia, africa to europe is everything reachable in less then 3 hours.

And the best is, that the Balearics are a main goal of the "cheap flights" airlines. For $40 to London or Berlin? No problem.

Looks like most people here say it's Thailand? I went to Bangkok twice, and pretty much like the place but not the girls because I don't know whether they are female or male.

I am looking for a city to stay with reasonably good internet infrastructure (99.99% uptime, minimum 4 MB download/2 MB upload speed) and cheap cost of living, of course hot women too.

So what do you guys say?

You're entitled to your opinion about Berlin, but no matter where you live in Berlin (or Germany for that matter) people generally speak English.

Try finding English speaking people in Neukölln or try finding a good english speaking doctor there. Good luck bro, better learn turkish or arabic.

And it's safe.

You're telling me Prenzlauerberg and Kreuzberg are dangerous?

- Berliner Kriminalitäts-Atlas - Aktuelle Nachrichten - Berlin - Berliner Morgenpost - Berlin

Please check out the stats for Kreuzberg and tell me why it is so safe. Berlin is in the top 3 of dangerous cities in Germany. There are good neighbourhoods, but you won't get a decent appartment there for 300 a month. But yeah, you can get a cheap flat in a nice neighbourhood 1 hour outside of Berlin.

Yes, I was talking about becoming a (permanent) resident.

I don't care if you hate Berlin but try to get your facts straight before you post.

You're telling me that one of the most dangerous parts of Berlin is totally safe because you lived there for like 2 months or what? Bro please.

Not getting into a pissing contest over this because I don't care and I bet most other people on this thread don't either.

-My girlfriend got a UTI and found an English speaking doctor in a clinic in Kreuzberg.
-Top 3 most dangerous cities in Germany=top 1% safest cities in the world
-Please re-read my last post: I had a really nice flat for 370 in Kreuzberg. For 300...that would be hard...but it's just a 70 Euro difference. Same shit.
-I got a residence permit.
-I lived there for 4 months "bro".

Stop making Kreuzberg sound like a war zone. What are you so afraid of?

Kreuzberg is what... like Camden (in London) or something? It's perfectly safe and you can find decent apartments for about 400/month. Every big city has shitty neighbourhoods. No one is forcing you to live with turks or arabs.

Another thing - 400 or even 800 per month is dirt cheap for a decent apartment in a nice place. Try renting somewhere nice in London and then tell me that 600-800 euro/month is a lot.

Ibanez | Jan, where do you live and what are the prices/lifestyle like?

I have no interest in bashing each others opinions but in my point of view Kreutzberg is definitively not one of the cities I'd like to live in. Why? I don't like that multicultural shit and I don't like to worry about my car being scratched or getting ripped off in the subway. Been there, experienced that (had to stay there for a few days).

At the end of the day it all comes down to personal preference. I'm pretty sure that most people will choose Munich over Berlin.

where do you live and what are the prices/lifestyle like?

Near Cologne in a nice neighbourhood. Houses are like 1-1.2k € a month, a nice appartment 500€+.
Living here is pretty quiet, nice houses, nice cars, nice people. Bigger cities like Frankfurt (one hour drive away) or Cologne are great for clubbing.

Berlin is fucking glorious. I've spent about two months total there over the last two years. Cost of living is actually quite cheap, there's good internet connectivity almost everywhere, the women are totally gorgeous, and the food is great, too. The city itself is fascinating and beautiful, and the people are very friendly.

That Berlin love must be an american thing.

Did you check out other cities as well?

Also, I lived in Kreutzberg while I was there the second time and really loved the neighborhood. It used to be a terrible fucking place, by the accounts of my German friends, but in the last 6-8 years all the artists/free spirits realized that it was a cheap place to live and started moving there to live and rent studio space en masse. It's now on the precipice of gentrification, which IMO is the perfect sort of neighborhood to live in.

I don't doubt that you know a lot more about it than I do. Never been to your area, but I'd like to check it out next time I'm in Germany. I have heard that Cologne is nice. Next time I'd like to see Frankfurt, too.

I did go to Munich briefly, which I really liked, but I didn't spend enough time there to really get the flavor. I also made it to Dresden for a weekend, just to see the scarred buildings and spend some time in the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister.

Also, since a friend of mine was on a postdoc in Hannover, I went to visit him there for a day. Gah. Very unpleasant.

How about Portugal? Anyone lived there?

This thread has made me realized that I've lived in a lot of fucking places.

Lived here too.

Portugal is really nice...but there's A LOT of difference between areas for a small ass country.

You can spend the summer in the south or Lisbon (where I stayed) all year round. Porto is also nice, but totally different than Lisbon and fewer expats.

Most people under 50 speak great English too (MUCH better than most Mediterranean countries).

But there's very little expat action even in Lison...not good. IMO harder to meet other people (locals and expats alike) than other places.

I think a lot of opinions are skewed by Americans used to fat bitches, then they get laid by some 4/10 skinny chick and they rave and rant about how great the place is. Germany isn't exactly known for hot girls.
