Eh, a fatality isn't guaranteed.
Agreed. My lab's mom lives right beside us, and a few months ago both of them got the same blood parasite. Nasty things, them are. Thankfully I have an awesome vet, so he came over and made many house visits over the weeks.
Got meds for both dogs, but my neighbor went and lost hers, and didn't tell me about it, because she was too embarrassed to since I picked up the bill. I didn't find out until my dog's meds were gone, and he started getting deathly sick again, so I went to get a refill and asked my neighbor if she needed more.
So her dog hadn't had any meds for two weeks, and the dog couldn't do anything except wiggle around on the floor, and yelp in pain. The vet came by, and he was even going to put her down that night, but my neighbor wasn't having it. If it was my dog (at the time) I would have had it put down. I didn't see any reason to put her through that suffering, especially since I figured even if the dog does somehow magically pull through, she''ll live a life of suffering, as I was sure the blood parasite had already done permanent damage to various internal organs.
Nonetheless, neighbor decided to keep the dog alive, so for the next several weeks the dog just wriggled around on the floor, while yelping in pain. Sure enough though, she's actually fine now. Walks a bit lopsided I guess, but other than that, always has a big smile on her face, can eat and goto the bathroom normally, etc.
