Theoretically, with this tool, one could scrape a copy of the entire YellowPages.com database (scrape each category, each state).

Yes, it can scrape a category statewide. I'm currently scraping all of Virginia's auto repair listings and will post the CSV for your browsing pleasure shortly.
 
Ladies and gentlemen, here it is. 5474 of the finest Auto Repair listings found throughout all of Virginia complete with Business Name, Address, City, State, and Zip in their own separate fields.

Maybe sometime soon Ill develop a Wordpress plugin that throws these in a database and creates categories based on the city and/or state. Basically, a one click directory creator. Anyone interested in paying me to do that? ;)
 
Doh! The output on that ones a little fubar'd. I have a few versions of the script floating around my harddrive and got confused with one of the earlier ones.

Here's the output generated by the final version YellowPages Scraper v1.0:

State?? Man you are thinking small! Yellowpages isn't just in one little country ya know! :D

Actually.. they seem to be same branding, different companies so it prob won't work on the other sites will it? (eg yell.com)

Give Eli a shout - a complete yellow pages db (or your proposed wp plugin) would be great in the SQUIRT vault.... it's coming up to subscription time.. help him spend it!

I looked at yell and, no, it doesnt fit that site. The way the script works is it does carefully scripted Regular Expressions for certain tags and portions of the YellowPages.com site design that I found to be repeated.

Heres another example of the power of this tool for everyone:
yellowpage_scrape.csv - 1.86MB
25,500+ LISTINGS (ALL FL real estate agents).
Name, address, phone number. All data in separate fields.
Got that in one click and theres plenty more where that came from.

lol at programmers making tools everytime Eli or someone else posts a way to make money, and selling them on WF or bluehats comments. Why... not use your own tools and make the "100k" that supposedly that method.. whatever it is makes, rather then sell 4 copies of a scraper for $50 each.

er, because i dont have time to create a directory...

ive got my own projects running that doesnt include a directory.

but, being able to code php well, i can spend a couple of hours coding a tool and selling it and continuing on with my life rather than committing myself to an entirely new business....

please explain and correct me if I'm wrong.

Why are you selling it instead of making $100K? You would need to sell 2000 copies of this program to make 100K which seems like a lot of work.

Ok that comment made me cringe. You don't think he's using his own product? He put together a tool for his own venture and then on top of that he decided to make a buck off of his scraper.

I like to call it double fisting. :eek:
