The whole project was designed to get Jake a Best Actor, which he didn't even get nominated. We will see later, it will probably go to Bradley Cooper. All the other big awards will probably go to Boyhood.

I don't keep up much with that stuff. I thought Jake was great though and I'm a big fan of him.

Compared to De Niro? I'm going to go with De Niro for Taxi Driver (a connection I keep hearing for this movie with Taxi Driver).

This is a solid line up of gangster/mob movies - maybe not Scarface :)

This is less gangster, but City of God is a great 'rise to the top' flick for drug lords if you haven't seen it. I think it's got a flawless rating on the top film sites. Has been one of my favorite movies for awhile.

If you liked City of God you might enjoy Tropa de Elite (called Elite Squad for North America). It's about a Brazilian anti drug squad (BOPE) operating in the favelas of Rio De Janeiro. The guy the wrote the screenplay adaption for City of God, Bráulio Mantovani, was involved in writing the screenplay for this movie. It gets an 8.1 on IMDB...

Seems there's a sequel that I haven't seen, Tropa de Elite 2: O Inimigo Agora É Outro, or Elite Squad: Enemy Within, that seems to be focused on a prison.

Going to have to watch this now.

There's a bunch of related movies that I also haven't seen, Bus 174, Carandiru, Favela Rising, City of Men, etc. that all get 7+ ratings on IMDB.

There's one more I did see, shot as a documentary, called Dancing with the Devil, about a drug dealer, a cop, and a preacher in Rio de Janeiro. I thought it was pretty good and it gets a 7.5 on IMDB.

Classic. If Sean Penn retired or disappeared or died after finishing Fast Times & Bad Boys, he would be remembered as a true legend. Instead he married Madonna and became a Hollywood brand name.

And we know about branding, right?

If you remember after Hurricane Katrina, Mr. Penn was paddling around New Orleans saving negroes, protecting homes, and shooting alligators.
