For all the guys out there who don't have a clue (which appears to be the vast majority of you):
Women may claim to like jewelry and yours actually might, but men have a tendency to show affection by spending money. The more you spend, the more you care. If you have a woman with a bit more than average intelligence, she knows this game. Unless you've put a huge amount of thought (not necessarily a huge amount of money) into jewelry, you're buying your way out of something actually thoughtful. She'll like it (or pretend to), but she won't love it.
You want to give her something special? Put some thought into something that is totally personalized and unique. Think about the things that seem to be her biggest problems or complaints and find a way to make them better. For example, if she complains that her office is always freezing, you might get her a small space heater. Romantic in the Hallmark sense? No. But she'll think of you every time she realizes she has toasty feet and thank you in her mind for making her comfortable.
If you pay attention to her, you'll see what her interests are. A gift that actually relates to a woman and the things she likes to do - like the tablet discussed above - are great gifts. Something you bought on sale because it's shiny and you think it will get you laid might not be your best choice if you're actually trying to impress her rather than placate her. If all fails: Write her a song or a love letter.
