Absolutely. Always diversify. Even if all your money is from SE traffic, white hat, black hat, whatever, you can be screwed faster then you know it. Never depend on one thing, one method, one stream of income.

Heh heh, that cracks me up. I don't have all BH sites, at all. I just don't build pure white hat sites anymore as an affiliate or adsense income stream.

And like you said, there's a group of people who say they do "black hat" because they think it will make them look cool... or something? I don't know what the motivation is.

Anyway, what I do, or what you do, or what anyone else does, might be considered BH by some, WH by others. There's no universal definition. Kinda back to what I was saying originally - that what works for you shouldn't be based on some label of WH or BH or whatever, but rather what feels right to you and brings in $.

True. I was just trying to say that the script may be useful even if similar sites haven't worked for someone in the past, and that one can learn from it even if they decide using it as is isn't for them.
 


Ok, let's roll:

First of all, I should be the most unhappy of all, since I still didn't even get the script! Definitely not cool, but I can live with it.

Regarding the issue itself, I understand both sides and wish you'd all be a little more flexible.

We can debate if a "super simple script" is the same thing as "some awesome new niche built sites specifically for them and no one else", but don't tell me I didn't pay.

I paid with 5 sacks of time, each filled with an entire day and so did other people - the forum currently has 1300+ threads and 16000+ posts and over 1/3 of it all was made by the 10 of us. So we did pay.

And you have to understand that something, on whichever side, must be wrong, if almost all of the ten winners (only kyleirwin hasn't said anything yet) are feeling cheated or at least a bit dissapointed. So let's work out a solution instead of playing the blame game.

On the other hand, give the guy some slack, he's trying to do the best thing and is not intentionally malicious. Ok, it's a scraper site, but stop for a moment and imagine you were new to it all and don't even know what a scraper site is and the guy that earns thousands with it shows it to you and says "this works"...

Jon obviously has a different mindset than most of us here, and that's why we're hunting for gold on his forum and not vice versa. So while I wasn't expecting the "niche site" to be a wp based scraper script, it's still the thing that brings him money and I won't argue before I learn more about it.

I for one never played with scraper sites, but hey, let's seize this opportunity to see the master scraper at work. Someone said to "just google a similar script" but I think there could be more to it. If someone was to show you two tanks, you'd might also say "yeah, both are tanks" and wouldn't have a clue about the Tiger being 5 times more powerful than a Sherman...

So...here's a decent solution (in my opinion) to this entire mess:

Jon: You could write your own little guide for turning the script into a profitable machine, explaining how you work with it, how to avoid getting my adsense account fucked by it etc. and send it to all the winners. It's easier than building 20+ sites, I think, and better for us as well.

Contest winners: Try and use the opportunity to learn how the big money is (almost always) really being made and how you can use the tools & knowledge to you advantage.

Jon already told us he can let his team set it up, if he then packs a promotion/monetization guide with it and a don't-get-fucked by hosting/isp/godaddy/adsense guide it would be a much better deal already.

I would be the most interested in where he finds high quality LEGAL full article feeds because you have to be pretty dumb to agree to let people steel your full articles.

Also, I just read in Jons post that he has custom scripting in the package. I wish he said that before because when you install it it just looks like wordpress with 3 or 4 plugins. The easy install is nothing new to me, I do exactly the same with my drupal sites when they run into 10+ customized plugins. What exactly is custom to it Jon? What value has your team added.
 
Ok guys, settle down for a second. Quite frankly, I think the contest was more than fair. Even if I was a winner, and I'm not, I would be exstatic for those scripts! Mind you, not just the scripts, but the knowledge. Remember my adsense earnings post? From $0.00/day to $333.33/day I am going to prove to you all that these sites can work and will work.

You cannot get the silver spoon 24/7 and maybe this is intentionally part of Jon's teachings, that you need to control your own revenue. :zzwhip: Seems that quite a few of you were looking for the easy way out, but can't you see, it's right in front of you! Apply!! Apply!! Apply!! Learn from doing as they say..

depends on the site, drupal is like a CMS construction kit, you can use combinations of modules and custom templating to create different sorts of sites, such as scrapers, real estate sites, myspace-like community sites, you name it I build it.
If you're looking for a list of modules check out the http://drupal.org/project/Modules page, when it's back up, seems to be down atm.

I'm not fighting with anyone anymore about this. Either take the script and do it yourself, or I'll have my guys make one for you on your host.

You spend the time getting 500 posts/50 threads, get back to me, I'll give you something you can download free from the internet and call it a prize. Still gonna be exstatic? And Jon really hasn't given us much info. Its pretty obvious what a scraper site does...

Anyways.. whatever everyone else wants to do I'll go with. I have no hard feelings about any of this, just a little disapointed.

Yeah. If you don't want to make it yourself, I'll have one made for you on your host. Plus you'll have the script itself anyhow and then you can do whatever you want with it from there. If you refuse the offer in itself, well, I'm sorry.

The only thing I can think of offering to those who have a moral/ethical issue with using RSS feeds as content, such as JDA, is some phone consulting on one of their current projects. But really I see him as being the only one who has an issue with it.

I'm going to play around with it and give it a try.

If I have any more problems with the script I may contact you for this.. but I think I can handle it on my own. I'll let ya know.
 
VinSVT, It's not even about the scripts.. it's about making money online. :) I understand what you are saying, you put a lot of posts on the forum, hopefully those will come to good use in the future. Anyways, none of my business how the contest winners feel.. I'm just showing my appreciation for making the prize public, and like I said, I plan on putting it to good use.
