Anyone care to share what they're using to build their directories? From scratch? Wordpress? Drupal? PHPLD?

Wondering what's the best route to go, to save time and potential headache.

We have some temp sites up and they are in Wordpress, but we're slowly switching them to Umbraco (.net CMS).

And no cash monies yet because we picked a fairly competitive term and also we're sandboxed.

Wow I just read this entire thread.

My questions:

1. Don't you feel a little shady saying "hey look, I have the #1 search result spot for [insert your business] and you can rent it for $x/mo, say no and I'm going to your competitors?" Or is that just "business."

2. Are you guys doing this, do you have actual businesses set up or are you just doing everything independently? Like are you all "make checks payable to Joe Schmoe or Paypal [name]@hotmail.com", or is it "yeah, we are Rad Inc., make checks payable to that name please, look we have a business ID number"?

3. If paypal, say you make $10k doing this as an individual and getting paid through paypal. How to taxes work on that? j/w

4. For those of you running PPC campaigns for your clients, are you using your normal gmail account for adwords? Or do you make the client set up their own? The reason I ask is if you're using you're own a) how do you keep budgeting straight for each client and b) what do you tell your clients if your acount gets banned for whatever reason?

Been using this method for years, but dude you gotta keep some stuff quiet. Now ever newbie is going to be targetting local search

1. It's just business.

2. It doesn't matter. I run it through a business, it looks more professional = gets more sales. Plus, if it's done under a business umbrella it is the businesses' liability, not your own.

Well, most of the time.

3. Taxes work on paypal the way they work anywhere else if you are a self-employed small business owner. You have to report them. Further to that... you may be able to sneak by a few hundred, a few thousand, here and there- but I would seriously dissuade you from not reporting XX,XXX or more on your return if you live and work in the U.S. The tax man will cometh, maybe not immediately, but eventually... and he will wring your wallet in back taxes, penalties and legal fees.

4. Who has only one Adwords account? And why would I connect it to my personal email? Why would I ever give the client access to said account and why would I ever tell them I have been banned?

Still wide open if you are smart...

Working on the Philly area. Dont mess! - just kidding, the area is so fucking saturated. Im working on it though, got a great domain name and charging dirt cheap prices. I will give updates once site goes live.

Kimbo , how is your site going? Im working on some offline advertising methods... putting flyers up, going to local restaurants and asking if I can put flyers in their establishment . Then probably a low budget direct mail campaign (im poor). Shed some light on whats working for you please

Read the thread. Lots of stuff works. It's really simple though...

ADD VALUE. BRING THEM CUSTOMERS.

If you can do that, they pay whatever you want them too.

Think outside the box and ADD VALUE.

Yup, my website is geared towards smaller businesses such as home improvement companies, small shops and restaurants. I add value by taking the monthly fee that they pay and taking half of it and spending it on advertising the directory (for all the categories). So say in theory I make 1000 in a month I spend 500 on adwords and other advertising. This way most categories should see a good amount of targetting traffic. This is how im adding value, great thread by the way

Hey guys, I just joined this forum, and on my first day I found this thread.

I just wanted to give mad props to both Kimbo and Val, as well as everyone who has contributed to this thread.

Fortunately I have a Ltd. Company I can work under, which is involved in advertising. =D

Finally I can make my first profit !! muahaha. Alright I'll keep you guys posted.

It's pretty hard to find aged domains with your city name in it. Any tips here?
For the SEO experts out there, is it ok to go with a brand new domain, knowing that we're trying to ranking for long tail kws?

Thanks

one year and my site still did not go into "production". Focus is important and as stated earlier. The people who "do" will "succeed".

Working my unique small biz angle report back later.

I agree tech, i recently got employed with an start up company, so shits crazy, and lost my focus. When it all settles down I am back in the hunt

PPC has been suggested here as also working for selling the ad space. But wouldn't there be a problem with the business just seeing what you did and making their own PPC? Is that where you target little mom and pop type places that don't know much about the web?

PPC has been suggested as a short term solution for selling ad space. Use PPC if you drop off of the front page for some reason, of if a sale you're trying to make won't move forward unless they see your listing on the front page.

The goal is still to have your long tail keywords bring you to the top.

If it were so easy, they would do it themselves. Their quality scores will suck, so they'll pay way more than they should. They won't get the same ROI as you can get. Stop looking for excuses.

found a guy that has been doing this since 2005. He's not even a full time SEO and he's probably banking at least $10k/month across different niches, won't say what they are though or his websites;X you'll have to hunt for it yourselves. It took me all week to do all my research for some brand new sites and I ran across his sites today.
