Buy an established site in a similar niche / aged domain with content vaguely relevant to what you're doing, 301 it and build links to that in a manner which is less "white hat" if you can't risk it.

If the friend is doing what you're doing, you've got to be one step ahead of them and start doing things which'll be harder for them to trace.

Also - every minute you spend worrying about your competitor (they're not your friend anymore) is a minute you've spent worrying and not making progress, whilst they build their business.

Keep doing what you've always done, and step up your game wherever you can, and forget about them.

One quick note I thought I put it out there...

If you are thinking of surrender then think about this, you have nothing to loose at this point your back is against the wall, why not go out shooting and take him out with you...

1. Go black all the way and destroy him doing it via proxy of course and not yourself
2. Go grey on your side of business and use all resources at your disposal to save what you have and if you are unable to save it then you had already given up nothing to feel sorry about.
3. Start a competing brand of your own that he does not know about and start selling under that brand, just in case you have to abandon the current brand. (setting up sites is cheap and easy).

In my opinion if you are ready to give up then at least give him a taste of his own medicine.

This guy might just be using all those excuses as a way to mask the fact that he thought you had a great idea and he's running with it.

You're neighbors right? Just start fucking with him. Get creative. A little oil on his sidewalk livens up mornings. Perhaps some brake fluid accidentally gets all over his car's paint (destroys paint in minutes btw). Maybe someone places an ad in the local newspaper advertising a new car for $5,000 and says to call them at 2am with his phone number on it. Maybe someone tipped off the police that he is dealing drugs out of his house? Maybe he's beating his kids? What if debt collectors started calling him at work? It would be horrible if someone posted a personals ad claiming to be the worlds best dick sucker (free trial!) on Craigslist with his phone number? Maybe boxes of 100 random porno DVDs end up getting shipped to his house every day for the next month?

Karma's a bitch, ya know?
