EDIT: I know it's retarded but I wear that safety clasp (don't know what it's called) that if you go down it gets yanked off the machine and automatically halts the treadmill...just cause I've seen too many of those videos ^^

Yeah, simply walking for a long duration *will* burn calories, and a lot if you do it long enough.. So by having a setup where you're actually walking while working, could help a person lose a ton of weight if they do it consistently..

Obviously the faster you set the speed on the treadmill, the more calories ya burn. So if you're short for time, just bust out a quick run... here's a few of my treadmill iphone snapshots I've taken at the gym ;)

not breaking any world records, I'm not one of those skinny Kenyans ;) I'm 185 - 6'0

I sit here with my unloved treadmill behind me thinking that I might could make this work. The trick will be the heavy amount of typing I do while I sit for hours on end. How's the typing v. reading on the set-up?

Here's the thing.. I'm going to assume you're self employed and work at home based on what you just mentioned..

You don't have to do the whole "treadmill walking hours on end while working" thing if you want to lose weight.

  • Get on that treadmill, jog for 20 minutes a day.. what is 20 minutes anyways? You can't tell me you can't spare 20 minutes a day..
  • Then integrate any of these other suggestions... drink more water throughout the day, it helps you lose fat... eat more frequent smaller portioned meals... eat no more than once every 3 hours... replace bad snacks with healthier snacks like low fat string cheese, yoplait light yogurt, etc... consume foods higher in carb in the morning and less of them at night (and more of protein at night)...
any of those suggestions combined with some treadmill work will help you lose a lot of weight.. and once you've lost as much weight as you can (when you plateau), just increase intensity on treadmill and/or add another one of those suggestions..

the idea of following a specific diet plan / workout plan step by step has proven ineffective, people won't do it if it's so fuckin strict. but if you slowly transition into a healthier lifestyle by making those healthier changes, you'll both lose the weight, and allow yourself to stick with it because it's not so bad.

It's a bit trickier than that, unfortunately. I teach all day on my feet (junior high), actively parent all evening (they're almost 2 and 4) and then work/write all night with a bit of sleep in between. So I can find 20 minutes, but 20 minute of mildly sweaty exercise is much too hard to work up to most of the time.

Besides most of the junk I eat, I eat while I'm working at night because it's the only time I have to actually sit and munch. I already burn quite a few calories through lifestyle. I have to eat for energy during the day - especially with too little sleep, but if I am standing and moving a bit for the 2-5 hours I'm working at night, I'll burn a few more and I won't be able to munch the way I do now.

And before you suggest munching on something healthy in the evening, I'll tell you upfront I've tried, but it never works. Willpower requires sleep and relaxation. After 13-14 hours of straight work in one capacity or another, celery just isn't going to cure the "I'm so tired, but need to work some more now, so I'll just have a little treat" blues. :) It's all or nothing and moving on the treadmill = nothing. :)

I have a recumbent (stationary) bike, too. I'll bet that would be easier to type on while riding. I'll have to think on this further - maybe on the bus ride to take my 8th graders to see Les Miserables tomorrow.

@Internet author. It's really pretty easy to type once you get used to the new digs. You'll find your own max typing-while-walking speed. (Once you max out on speed theres always incline ;) ) For some people (I've read about others that do this) it's too hard to do a major project on the treadmill so alot of people just do the surfing/ information gathering/researching/ checking stats stuff. (Put all that stuff together and it's still hours a day sometimes)

We just looked on line last night to get Les Mis tickets at TUTS and they were all sold out for Sat night. Sunday was still open but the babysitter is coming on sat :( Ohwell. I've seen it twice already but hubby never has.

We did the student tickets on the single day they offered them. ($10 at Orchastra level) Nothing like 220 children of poverty at Broadway! They did very, very well and enjoyed the show - which was AWESOME. I shed a tear or ten, even and I've studied the book, taught the story and now seen it performed twice. Lurve it! It's a shame you can't find a way to go. Now if only Phantom would come back.... btw - there were a lot of homeschoolers there. I wonder if you can get in for cheap next time under that ruse with the kiddos.

I type extremely fast (occupational hazard), so I'll probably get frustrated if I have to slow down. But it's worth a shot! $7 you say? LOL

Now that just doesn't look like fun to me. I would rather take an hour break and go for a jog. However, you are probably healthier then I.

UPDATE:

I had a member recently ask me about my Walkstation. Since I had just recently upgraded it and he wanted to see pics, here it is:

I was off it for quite some time. But as some of you already know, I've had back problems all my life and recently threw it out pretty bad (around xmas walking with a cane and everything). I've found the best thing for it is walking. It stretches out my back while strengthening the back and core muscles that surround my fucked up spine. The funny thing is I always found it hard to get motivated to lose that extra 10 lbs by getting on the treadmill. But when faced with being debilitated, my ass has been either outside or on that treadmill everyday. You just don't fuck with your health and mobility!

Anyway, I haven't been able to do the slow walking for hours mostly because with a 7 month old, I just don't have the time. But I do get on here for the fast walking/climbing for an hour everyday during his nap time and it's really paying off. :)

In light of the treadmill discussion. Pretty funny video. These guys have WAY to much time on their hands.

I finally got around to doing a Walkstation blog (only took me almost a year) but it's my first "real" blog. I have to say this and updating my turbostats on twitter has been alot of fun. (There's something deeply satisfiying about doing internet stuff just for the love of it, instead of trying to make a buck, you know?)

Check out the sig if you want to advertise on it. It's free. (sort of) ;)
