Luxury cars - Buy them Used, or New?

One brother of mine is a mechanical engineer (fixes his own motorcycles, cars, lawnmowers), the other is a diesel mechanic (fixes cars, trucks, frontend loaders, just about anything on a mine site), and my father used to a bunch of different stuff also (fixes trains, cars, motorcycles, planes, boat engines, sprint cars). All three of them will tell you that your brother in law is a pleb, warranties are worthless, and dealer mechanics don't know jack shit about what they are fixing.

Sounds like you buy shit cars if you need to use the warranties. Consider not taking the advice of your pleb brother-in-law and you might not end up with pieces of shit that fall apart on you.

Honda Certified is legit. They will even replace the fucking floor mats if they have a stain.

Unless for some crazy reason your corporate tax rate is 100% then it isn't 0 dollars out of pocket. Also you have to depreciate the cost of the car over a certain number of years. Different countries have rules which often limit the amount you can depreciate each year.

So you may not be able to fully expense your $90k "company car" until after a dozen years or so.

Back to the OP, it all depends on how much you are making and/or how much liquid assets you have. If a $100k+ car is only 1 or 2 months of after tax profits then might as well just buy new. Same if you have millions stashed away in the bank and stock portfolio. It's not like you can take the money with you to the grave so might as well enjoy life.

But if you considering buying a new car where the price tag say is greater than 20% of your current net worth than maybe you should consider buying used.

Some people may say that expensive ass cars are horrible investments but cars aren't investments. They're a luxury and if you really like them than buy what you can afford.

What I don't understand are the people who have little or nothing saved up and have to rely on their monthly paycheck to make the payments on their luxury cars. If they ever get laid off they are so screwed.

Same for those that spend more each month on car payments then they do on rent or their mortage because they live in a pretty standard or even crappy home but want to drive a really nice car.

One of my cars is a Honda and although it is not used ( bought new ) these guys will almost bend over backwards on some things I thought they never would.

I bought the extended warr. just because of their service on my Pilot alone. I've only had a few small minor issues with the SUV, I am mostly in there for reg oil changes and tire rotations and I just bring my laptop and work while I wait.

One time I went in there because my luggage rack crossbars began fading on the very top where the sun was hitting it. It was just a minor annoyance and no one can see it ( except me when I was on my roof ) and they said no problem and wrote it up as Honda Care and I got a new set for free on the spot installed in less then an hour.

out of the cars you have worked on, been around.. Which ones ( brand and model ) do you think are the least prone to problems as they get older? I'm looking to purchase a car for my son who will be turning 16 in a couple years and would like to get him something he can go around town in and be reliable.

Any Honda. I swear, those things are practically bulletproof, but my experience is from 01-05, but I can't imagine they have changed much. Easiest cars to work on, and not much goes wrong at all, I use to buy the cars that were traded in from the dealer (91-95's) for a few hundred, throw a few hundred worth of parts and few hours of labor and resell for a couple k. If I was to buy my 16 year old brother a car, I'd be looking into a 05-08 (forgot exact years) accord (4 cylinder), like an EX or similar.

Nissans are okay, but a PITA to work on.

Subarus have lots of problems, from kids beating the shit out of them, to piston rattling (awesome recall on that) on older normal aspirated flat 4's, to tranny issues, blah. But was fun working there throwing on huge turbos and built trannys and what not.
 
I buy all my cars 1 year old. Got a top of the line Escalade for 50k vs. 80-85k with only 10k miles on it. Was a lease return. No reason to take that 30k hit on year one. I've done this my last few cars and always have had great luck.

Same but will go a year or two older as long as anticipated mileage is less than 30k or so when I go to sell. Never had a repair / warranty that turned into any real inconvenience. Bought a couple of cars brand new and feel like a fool for it now.

I was reading awhile back that some crazy Australians were getting like 1,000hp on the drag strips with the Subaru 4cyl boxer engines? I know for a fact they are several successful installation in airplanes. Saw a video of one revving like 6k rpm with a wine glass sitting on top with hardly a ripple in the water. Oh yeah now I remember Subaru parent company was Fuji Heavy Industries or something. They built many of the engines in the Jap aircraft of WWII.

I always but a couple years old. I just paid cash for an 07 escalade ext. It came off of a 3 year lease has around 25k miles and I was shown full service records (I still have them). It has every upgrade you can get on an escalade (minus the dvd player) and I got one hell of a deal on it. It's also "certified" I'm not 100% sure if that means anything yet, but I'd like to think it does. This is the first certified vehicle I've bought.

I always buy certified caddy's. Basically it extends the full bumper to bumper warranty for another 4 years / 50k miles. So its just like buying new. They have a great warranty and escalades get gold key (give you another escalade to drive while yours in getting fixed so no down time).
 
I just got this for $12,000 cash, gave my Lincoln to my mother.

It's mint , 60k miles has A/C in the seats and all that shit. Great deal for $12k IMO.

I will say though, the Lincoln was more comfortable.

Unless I become retarded rich, I'm not sure I'd ever buy a new car it's such an epic waste of money.

The good thing is that it's a fairly rare car so people don't really notice it's old as fuck.

My only beef is that the steering wheel isn't wood, it's leather. I fucking hate leather wrapped wheels. I'm actually considering taking it into the dealership and seeing about getting a new steering wheel that has wood. I don't even know if infiniti makes cars with wood steering wheels, this is my second infiniti and both had leather steering wheels.

....I guess things could be worse and I could have a rubber steering wheel eh? Maybe I should submit my problem here: First World Problems: My spoon is too big.

60k miles? How old was the previous owner?

My buddy just picked up a Lincoln Zephyr from a nice old lady who babied her car. Plus he got an even better discount for showing her a nice time on the town and how soft his bed is... not really, but cool story anyway.
