Yo people, ok I have a question -

I am 22 and just graduated from university in London this summer and yesterday received a job offer from a company in Arizona, USA - Based in Tempe

Ok now I am a British citizen - how does it work - they send me a contract, I take the contract to the American Embassy to apply for a working visa?

Or they have to do sponsor paper from there? -

They have just offered me the job, and we talked etc - they said think about it, get back to us

Also, anyone from AZ here? Like on a monthly basis, how much do you get deducted from tax? Like if I'm on $40k a year -

If I take it from, I have found some apartments are roughly $400-500 per month

I have absolutely no idea how the work visa thing works, but you can calculate your take home pay based on this...

PaycheckCity.com - Paycheck Calculator

With two allowances (not a lot, you're probably able to claim more), your weekly take home pay would be $626.52.

I don't live in AZ, but I'm out there often, as I do work for a company in Phoenix. There is a good chance that I will be moving out there in June though.

Your $40k/yr salary would be plenty of money to be able to live decently out there, the cost of living is pretty low compared to other large cities in the US (San Diego, California for example, or even more so... New York City).

The apartment quotes you found might be misleading though. While I'm sure there are apartments for rent in that price range, they won't be the most desireable of places to live. I'd say plan on spending about 600-700/mo for a nice apartment, but they could be found for less depending on what you're looking for.

I'd rent a house if I was you though. It's so ridiculously cheap out there. You can find newish 3-4 bedroom houses for $1k/mo, which should fit within your budget with that pay, depending on your lifestyle.

I believe, you need to get a letter from the company, stating that you will be working there, for how long, in what capacity, then take that with your passport, birth certificate (probably) etc, to the US embassy.

good luck.. the US are total stooges about that.

Unless you're from Mexico of course.

Haha lol no I'm not mexican -

Well the place I'm going to has a massive student population - so there are loads of apartments apparently near the $500 per month range.

I'm a single guy - 22 - don't spend so much time at home, go to the gym and work so I don't want to spend like 1k a month on rent man! That's too much because I have to take into account my deductions like TAX - BILLS and say personal spending money

Also I'd probably be sending money home here to my parents every month also- like $1000 so I can help out with paying the rest of the mortgage left on my London home

Hmmm I don't get all this allowances shit - plus I get paid BI-WEEKLY -

Bi-weekly Gross Pay $1,538.46
Federal Withholding $231.19
Social Security $95.38
Medicare $22.31
Arizona $0.00
Net Pay $1,189.58

Gross Pay- $40,000.00
Pay Frequency - Bi-weekly
Federal Filing Status - Single
# of Federal Exemptions - 0
Additional Federal W/H - $0.00
State Arizona % of Federal - 0% Exempt

Make sense?

Hello from AZ! I'm south of Tempe.

Good advise on the houseing above.

There is probably someone at the company who's job is to help non-citizens move to and work in the US. Don't be shy, tell them you'd like more info on the move/working in the US and if they could help you.

Good luck, keep us updated please.

Haha sweet - yea he is sending me that info, but I like to keep one step ahead of the game if you know what I mean

How is Tempe? Cheap?

How much would I be looking to spend like weekly on normal shit like food/bills? As above, I'm just a single guy, normal guy, I don't like to live all fancy and shit, I just get on with my work and gym...and meeting girls but yea..you know

What's like normal I'll be looking to spend on a weekly basis for myself?

Tax deductions I still don't understand fully -

Rent, I think it's going to be $500-600 a month let's say

HElp me out plz with this - I need to know if the money justifies the move there, coz right now in London I'm on £19000, I pay £500 a month on rent and spend £200 a month on transport BUT I live with my family so food and all that shit is taken care of - if I go there, I'm on my own

Yea' I know but - everything is cool - I just need to know if its worth it

Saying adventure is easy enough - I have to take into consideration other shit too as I'm 22 now - not 17 or something

I think what you mean is... you're 22 now, and not 35 with a wife and kids. Go for it...

Do it! You will regret it if you don't, a missed adventure. US Chicks love British accents, put on a suit and tell them you are a 00 agent ;)

How is Tempe? Cheap?
Tempe, Phoenix, Mesa... same shit. The tri-city area there is pretty much one 'n the same. There are nice, and not so nice areas of each city. Prices a pretty much the same. Housing costs are more expensive the closer you get to the downtown phoenix area... and get cheaper the further away you go.

I don't know what exactly it would cost for a single person in an apartment for utilties (gas, electric, water, cable), but it'd probably be around $225-250/mo... including cable internet, digital cable (100+ channels) + basic utils. Tag on another $30-$60/mo for a cell phone, depending how much you use it.

Your food costs depends on what you eat... a fast food meal is $5-$7. You can buy a month's worth of food at the grocery store for $250-$300... depending on what you eat. Steaks every night, it'll go up a bit. Less meat, more ramen... then it's cheaper.

Then you also have to take into account the few other things you'll need... shampoo, soap, laundry stuff, deodorant... but then again you euros don't bathe much... so it probably won't be much :p .
Seriously though, that stuff doesn't add up to much.

You will most likely need an H1-B visa and those are almost gone already for 2007. There are some other options, but your (maybe) future employer should really get a local immigration lawyer involved. If the employer is willing to spend an extra $1K the visa process can be accelerated, but again the number of available H1-Bs for 2007 is almost reaching the limit already. Your other options are L1 visa and maybe E2, but it requires some strategic thinking and work with the company that wants to hire you.

The pay range you are mentioning, makes me believe that this is not a specialized position that requires your skills and could be filled from within the US. It rather makes the impression of cheap labor to save money. Be careful with these offers, as you might get into a sweat shop and you are limited of where to work for whom with these type of visas.

Chris

PS: I run a very large US immigration related forum in another language and see these problems daily.

What is the dollar worth compared to your currency?

I think that this company could help you out as well, like speeding up visa stuff, all sort of paperwork, etc. :)

Damn that's a real downer! If they are all gone, I was doing some research and I figured the closest was H1-B too :( sucks

Well its a web design job - I've done a few stuff for these guys before too so now they are like - we'd like to bring you over to work in house

I been to USA before on the J-1 visa on a student internship for one year but I didn't realise there were quotas and shit on how many you can get whatever - It should mention shit like that on the London Embassy webpage but it doesn't - sucks

Whats L1 and E2? These guys are giving a contract of 1 year - with review after to extension if they like me whatever
