Gaming Facebook. This is on a whole new level

But maybe I'm going about this wrong.

Having users merely like my website will drive traffic from Facebook feeds to my domain, but I may lose out on the "community" aspect of owning a page with a wall and all that.

Here are the three options I currently see on my domain, a wordpress micro site for a single product I promote:

1. Like button for the domain. Users who like my site will drive traffic to my domain through their feeds, but then the contact is gone (right?)

2. Like button on the domain, but it will drive users to my Application, where they can like it and I can keep in touch with them and it will be on their profiles too.

3. Same as #2 but to a Facebook page instead.

I'm thinking option #2 is the best for long-term marketing, although #1 may drive more traffic to the domain which is where my selling is done.

Comments?

I was under the impression that creating a page and Application is the same thing? If someone joins your facebook page, and the admin makes a post, does it show up in their feeds? I know that when someone joins your facebook page, it shows up in the feed as well, so there's really no benefit to just having a like button for your domain I think.

I'm gona experiment with it tomorow on a few of my sites as well. I'm wondering if its possible to use ajax for hiding/revealing content?

Would search engines see the content no problem for seo? I'm thinking instead of making a single alluring item to attract followers I could do it for all my best content.

And as for #2 and #3 above... if they simply Like my Application, will I get their personal info / emails? :) It's looking like no...

My site really needs no registration. I sell a product and dump them out to a store and collect my commissions.

I am NOT gonna block content if they don't Connect via Facebook.

This is gonna be monumental once I figure out what the best situations are for different types of sites.

I added facebook 'like' buttons to all my products on my online store... it's pretty cool. I have a fan page for my store which has over 1000 fans, but then if people use the 'like' buttons on my products it actually automatically creates a fan page for each product. I don't really understand what the point of that is...

what version are you guys using? I see a lot of people commenting that the 2.5 version works better than the new 3.x version. Im on the 3.x version and i don't even see the options you guys are talking about. I can get mine to run and work just fine but i don't see an option to see any logs that store the info so i know im doing it right.

I dont think it creates a fan page, does it? I think it just creates a "Alex likes link"

you need to take out og_type.

to get their email, you have to implement the facebook connect api. just simply using the like button wont get your their email, or any information on them for that matter. gigya has an api for facebook connect that makes it a bit easier.

there are a ton of possibilities though to virally promote your site though.

So my LIKE button on my basic site is cool, but this article explains why we should look into the slightly more complex SHARE button if you're not doing an application:

Facebook Like Button Vs. Facebook Share: Why I’m Keeping Both

On my site having the old share button and an xfbml like button did not work. For some reason the like button did not work. But using a xfbml like button also gives users the ability to add custom text and facebook adds a description to the wall post so it is basically like a share button.

Anyways ... just implemented the like button. What has been your experience with it?

(quick note: on www.facebook.com/insights you can add your site so you get stats on # of likes etc. but that data is probably delayed a couple of days. so no stats for me just yet)

Well the way I see this, you can't just check if someone likes your URL. In case you want to lock down content unless someone is a fan, you need to create an application to make this possible. Right?

Yea, because you need an API code, App secret, and App ID to make it work.

i tried that and I couldn't get the content hidden...showing fans, like button, fbml, was all working except the hiding content part..

where can I hire dev's to code up some simple stuff for me ?

I'm in the same boat. I'll pm you with a few things I would try if you haven't already.

Making an ap is easy - hiding the content seems to be hard. I've tried quite a few things and it's just not playing nice.

If I figure it out I'll post a little run through - but any direction from anyone getting the "hidden" bit to work would be great.
