I own a .com domain name that has the title for a new movie that is going to come out in the future in a big way (e.g. starwarsepisode1.com) what would be the best way to monetize it if any?

Start building content now. News, pics, tidbits, whatever. Put a WP blog on it and just write at least one post a week. By the time the movie comes out you should have some decent aging on the domain and content indexed. Also build up links slowly over time and then blitz them when the movie comes out.

Then you can monetize however you want, CPA offers, AdSense, Direct Advertisers, whatever works for you.

I'd put a Wordpress blog on it like Joshtodd said, and use SimplePress to add a forum. Monetize with Fandango, Blockbuster and Netflix.

As above,
For blog/forum content ideas, it can be handy to sign up for Google Alerts for the movie
name keyword, that way, you'll get an email most days with a list of news stories related to it.
Can save a bit of time.

Is there good money to be made doing this or is it a lot of work for little return? Is there value in selling the domain or parking it?

Depends on what you mean by "good money" but generally speaking no you won't make good money. Adsense cpc's are low in entertainment and cpa offers don't convert as well as you'll want them to.

If you're gonna put a lot of time into seo'ing a site, go with another niche. If you're just gonna get an exact match domain for the movie, write a few articles and index it, then it could be worthwhile.

Everybody has had good advice. You want to be THE comprehensive source for news, gossip, discussion, pics, and video clips.

Don't be shortsighted in how you can monetize this. Whether it's a teen heartthrob or chickflick movie, there are tons of stuff you can target to the demographic. Don't forget about Amazon, etc. to sell the dvd and coloring books down the road.

If the movie comes out in a couple months you should get your ass moving now and pay for some link building packages you can get here. Join some movie boards and blogs and link back to the site. Get hopping and go make some money.

Just checked the search volume on Google adwords and it is currently showing 90,000 which seems good, but still doesn't help me make up my mind whether to put a lot of effort into the domain. hmmm

Out the domain and sell it if you're too lazy to do something with it.

The thing is that I don't mind doing the work (outsourcing it) if its worth the money/effort, but as I have never done anything like this in this field I am not sure what I should do. I hate to waste my energy on something that will bring in pennies.

Build a blog and start getting decent traffic. If you fail monetizing it, sell it ! If the movie is great success then I'm sure you will find a buyer quickly.

I could have built the site and started building backlinks in the time since you started this thread. Get off your ass.
