so when the site starts making money I can flip that cash into expanding the site using services that will automate generating relevant backlinks.. like those services that submit your page to directories and what not... Pretty cool!

yes. Think of your revenue as capital and it turns into simple economics. You can't invest in new materials until you have enough capital to afford to. Your sites are meant for raising capital which can be used to promote your other sites.

All the stuff I've read before is coming back to me. Things about providing value, flipping cash into the "goose" to produce more "golden Eggs".... stuff like that

Its caused me to stop and think for a second because the articles I've been writing have been completely blind. They are more personally driven and keyword optimized than for any specific audience.

Like some posts are just rehashed info I've read from a bunch of different places, some other info has been a kind of smooth lead in to some product for more information. And other blogs are totally copy paste with a link to the source.

The audience won't consistently feel a real person behind each post. There is no personality, and no main goal for the site other than earning a profit.

What I mean is I've not considered my ideal audience and served them as best as I could.

I don't have children and I have no idea about counselling children. Most of the other blogs I've read are more like personal accounts of what parents are going through and other blogs talk about certain hot issues and give the authors opinion.

So... Instead of giving up on this one and selling it for peanuts I want to at make a few changes.

First I want to figure out exactly who I'm writing for. Ideally I want to make this a commercial oriented site.

The next thing is to create the About Me page. I'm just gonna wing it, and follow the guidelines I've found on that problogger.com site.

I've learned a lot so far so I'm excited!

I've been doing this all wrong! haha shit!

if I would have just thought a lil I'd have avoided going this project, and going about it the way I have.

Also if I'd have just listened to the advice you gave me at the beginning about starting a site I have a real interest in.. I'd be much better off.

I've made my mind up. I'm gonna sell this site because I really don't enjoy building it. I've learned a lot from it, so that's where its worth is for me.

What can you guys tell me about selling my site? Things I can do to prepare it to sell for more, how to make estimates...stuff like that.

consistent income and proof of it. 10-12x monthly profit = value

Side Project - College Book Site

My cousin and I are going to look into selling college books.

We need an eCommerce site that will take orders for us and secure the information users submit to us.

We also need a system in place for processing that information, placing orders, and notifying customers when their orders are places and when they are shipped.

Can anyone point me in the right direction to answer these questions? =D

so I learned its a hefty amount of work..

[11:13:51 PM] Travis: nice
[11:13:53 PM] Travis: well
[11:13:53 PM] Travis: GL
[11:13:57 PM] Travis: cause ecommerce is hard as fuck
[11:14:20 PM] graffist448: huh?
[11:14:20 PM] Travis: you need to get a payment gateway, have good credit, make sure your site is PCI compliant, following like the 600 measures that the BB says you must follow

... damn.. I'm not sure how much work that actually entails.

If anyone's got any insight with that I'd be glad to have the enlightenment. =D

ecommerce is challenging for your first venture. Textbooks are only purchased 2 or 3 times a year, so you'll have lots of down time in orders. I'd look at more evergreen stuff, like sporting goods/cooking supplies/electronics/etc.

the whole idea was to buy the merchandise ourselves and then sell the books back to the bookstores and students in the area.

I agree with dchuck, but if you want to test the waters of ecomm. you can start small and only accept paypal for purchases and if it stakes off you can scale upwards and onwards. there are templates out there like Wordpress Shopping Cart - ShopperPress and others that give you everything out the box, you just gotta market and promote it without a full blown pci compliant CC enabled operation.

takes lots of startup capital to pull something like that off. Not saying don't investigate it, but there are just a lot of hurdles involved with getting something like that profitable.

Especially when you're competing against eBay, Amazon, Chegg, B&N, BookRenter, etc.

I started a group on facebook for internet marketers who want to share info and help each other out, form alliances or w/e I opened it a few days ago so the more people that join the better.

The chat feature is really cool.

I picked up a book called "Search Engine Optimization: An Hour A Day".. its the 2007 edition but its a really good read.

It covers all the background I'd have had to fumble around to find.

You were right, Dchuk... the guy is good! Here's a lil LP he made to build himself a list.

Frank Kern. Frank Kern Videos

The ad said something like "Inappropriate Marketing by Frank Kern"... got me curious. That short lil LP is like a little master piece.

My book ca$hvertising just came in the mail. I'm on page 20 something already. Its really easy to read and I'm enjoying it very much so far. I want to take the LF8 and toy with that for some time on forums n stuff.

What I'm gonna do is carry a notebook with me in which I'll write short little sales pitches using the different techniques I"m learning so I get my head around using them. I'll do something like write 5-10 pitches for each technique and correct or improve them by remembering to offer benefits, focus on the buyer, and including a call to action.

I'm planning a site around going green. So while I practice that I'm brainstorming keywords and trying to keep up in school.

ok so the truth is I"m not doing that notebook thing. Instead I'm starting a new blog. Then I'm going to write a review on every product in that niche.
