Work in Co-Working centers?

Tried this for a day in Baltimore, which is now about more then a year ago. Sorry to say I could not stand the next person coughing, the fat bimbo nagging to me that I should come to "the" office with properly dressed clothes and the random fart smells of people passing by. East or west home is best!

I think it depends on your personality type - I work much better at home, with no distractions, talking to nobody all day. It's nice to get out of the house and talk to others once a week, but that's enough for me.

fuck man I just got to my parents place with 786 mbps internet. I went to the coworking place in town (there is only one) and they have 40mbps internet. I looked at it and, with parking and the fact that I'll eat out ever day for lunch, it'll add up to $500/month. Fuck that. I'll just go to the local college's library and chill there as I chat up 19 y/o hotties.

also, I'm moving to Munich in 5 weeks and the coworking places there are all 300 Euros/month. WTF.

looks like I need to learn how to be productive at home/starbucks/library.

If €300 seems a lot then München might not be the place for you..

Nah, I can get the same benefits elsewhere for free. Like, I'm working out of the Hilton's lobby right now. I'm not even staying here. Wifi? Check. "coworkers"? check. Feeling like you're a productive member of society? check.

I'm actually going to check out a co-working place out here in NJ.

This place is supposed to be an incubator/hub for start-ups with the possibility of funding. Not that I'm looking for that but it's a nice option.

Everything like WIFI, water, coffee included for only $250 a month.

I do worry about being distracted by others around me and I have a pet peeve of people looking at my screen. If it's a real bad distraction then I'll possibly upgrade to the private office for $550 a month.

Working at home is not an option because I live with my girlfriend and my son. I have so many distractions and my productivity sucks when I'm at home.

Co Working Spaces are great when you go travelling. You've got a steady connection 24/7 and it's good for socialising in a new area. Most of the people I've run into are programmers and designers, but you get all kinds. It's similar to any other work, people tend to know when to shut up and get on with it. And for me, after working for 3 years just hiring family/workers on odesk, it's good to share concepts and ideas. And if you're making moderate bank you'll be by far the richest person there.

I know a few creatives (not gay webmasters) that do this in London, and a friend of mine works somewhere very similar sounding in Philly for a tech startup. Great for networking opportunities not to mention the general social aspect which I definitely miss from the days I had a 'proper job'..

This is what I'm curious about. Are the networking opportunities really that good? Or is it mostly just idiots who won't shut up about how amazing their new idea / site / project is, and how it's going to be the next biggest thing? Because I can get that all day on Skype if I want, and at least with Skype I have a handy "hang up" button, and can make up excuses that don't exist like, "sorry, cleaning lady is here, so I have to go". I can't do that if the guy is 2 feet away from me though.

Are these people worth knowing, and people who become contacts for years to come? Logic dictates probably not, because the people worth knowing have their own bloody offices, or even buildings, not renting a chair and desk for $300/month.

Maybe I'm wrong though.

I just recently quit my job to focus on my business and ideas. At work, I used to shut people out by just putting on my headphones and listening to music.

But I do think that the networking opportunity is there. Check out the place that I'm gonna take a look at:

JuiceTank Innovation Lab - Incubator Coworking Space for Startups - New Jersey, NYC

I like that they have events where entrepreneurs and start-ups meet.

And even if I became a baller, I don't know if I would go the route of getting a huge office space. I can easily get a private office at one of these places for $550 a month and not deal with the headaches that are involved with getting your own building/office. You have to deal with getting internet, paying for electricity/water/gas as well as I'm assuming insurance. The costs would add up quickly.

But if you run a large company then I understand. I think places like these are better suited for smaller teams.

I tried it for 1 month and although it's great to meet people, I realized that I have one luxury at home that I cannot have in any co-working space: access to a kitchen with a fridge full of delicious organic foods that I buy myself.

Some co-working spaces do offer a small/basic kitchen, but I'd probably feel a little awkward chopping vegetables in there while people are walking in and out for coffee/tea/water.

It's shitty because you do meet people in co-working spaces. Lots of developers, designers, marketers... oh well.
