Its hard to imagine right now what the next upgrades will come to the internet as a whole, fuck most things I've been starting to work towards and begin to see almost seem out of this world, some things are starting to seem like a sci-fi movie.

What do I mean? Well in 5, 10, heck 15 years what do you think the internet is going to look like, really think outside the box here, everyone on the web now is so used to static pages (Yes I'm calling everything static from now on there is no such thing as dynamic in my mind right now).

Well by static I mean I'm here typing this message on a page where only a few animated gifs are moving, by static I mean browsing the internet and seeing 2D pages all over, by static I mean having a look around and only being able to interact with the site to a certain level. (Just so we are clear but keep reading this could interest you).

Now by todays standards dynamic websites interact with the user, they can talk to there friends on MSN, chat rooms, a website that remembers your name, ect... those are all considered dynamic pages, but both static pages and dynamic pages are increasingly easier to create.

Moving on we have web 2.0 sites, some are increasingly interesting, others seem to be following the old age of static 2D pages, now my question to you is what do you think the net will look like in the future? Will it look like the pages we see all over the place with maybe some graphic designs here and there

I saw your question a bit differently. I thought about "What will the internet become" in the context of net neutrality and evolution of the way service providers serve up content. I'm wondering how that will all play out in the marketplace and in legislation, 10 years down the line.
 
What's with the pictures? You think it will just become a 3D space?

Check out "home" for Playstation 3. It's exactly that. You can chat, watch movies in the cinema (!) and all sorts of other stuff. Pretty nice though not that different from second life, etc.
 
From the pictures you can guess that I'm more or less talking about the look but imagine a TRUE interactive VIRTUAL environment kind of like a massive online game like World of Warcraft in which over 9 million people have played.

I'm talking about a new age of branding possibilities, I'm talking about something that 99% of us will never have imagined down the line (I'm in the 1% which knows its possible).

Not even to mention how interactive a user can get with products, services, browing around the net, they wouldn't even realize going to another webpage because the browser itself now acts like an interactive VIRTUAL world.

Whats your thoughts people? I already know mine and I already want to work on making this type of thing a reality however I believe its a bit far fetched but I love the challenge hahaha (Yes my mind goes crazy sometimes).

Oh no I'm talking 10000000 times more advanced like out of this world advanced haha. Think about it could you imagine the company who pulled something like that off.

I'm not even 100% sure I can fully outline exactly the vision of it but think matrix, out of this world, 3D completely interactive, World of warcraft times 10 type of shit.
 
Whatever you're on, I want some. Haha but seriously, 10 years might be a bit too short of a timeline for something like that, but I could see fully immersive environments at some point in the future. As far as when...hard to say. 25, 50 years? The internet is evolving quickly, but the rest of the technology world to allow such a thing is not moving at the same blistering pace.

Not really think about it, what is the current limitation of making something like this a reality.

Do you know what it is?

Its the web browser. But how does a web browser work, a user downloads it, installs it on there computer and browses the internet.

Now how does a game like World Of Warcraft work. The same way they download it open it and they play the game.

The only real limitation to this is there is no current browser engine (Browser engine? WTF). In the gaming world its called a game engine which creates the environment but what happens if we create a web browser which acts like a game engine.

Well in theory you can create an online virtual world. (Thats a brief description of it).

If something like this was to catch on super quick you'd get companies changing there websites to interact with the game itself, something like an Open API, Google has open APIs, so does everyone else these days.

Also in the early stages you won't have to create a full virtual world you create a game with basic features, search land, ect... then you display the pages through the newly created browser (Which acts like a game engine). Now you can fully browse the web just like you would anywhere else.

This has already been done by a few companies but at this stage its still super shitty work.

I'm only telling you this all to get the ideas flowing, oh and because I'm going to actually create the browser for it.
 
Oh fuck now you got me going, you see the technology is already there, the game engines these days (Still using World of warcraft as a main example) already does this but a web browser does not.

See in massive online games you are ONLINE in a virtual world but your not browsing the internet, now all that you need to do is tweak the game engines to browse the net in a pre-created world, but a dynamic one in which the users can additionally create.

Its hard to explain but its in my twisted head.
 
It still just sounds like home/second life :)

Anyway, I doubt people would even want such an interface. What we have now works very fast, I can find the info I need quickly. I do not want to browse some kind of virtual library to find the book I need or whatever.
 
Lol, you're going to create the browser for it? Ok, now you're definitely on something.
 
Btw, I believe that second life is opensource, and allows people/companies to extend it easily.

Yeah I'm fucked up I know but trust me I was always that one very stupid fuck that believed in nothing is impossible only improbable and next I always believed that you can do anything you wanted to do.

I normally just laugh when I hear someone say this because it sounds like you give up before you even try.

Anyway its possible the technology is there it would just be hard to pull off, well it would be harder to generate it to be overly popular.

Yes but what if you could find that information much faster in areas which are more memorable, less needs for bookmarking a hundred pages, not to mention how much more time you'd spend online if you liked it.

But even if you got 1 Million people using it think about the advertising potential on something like that, give it away for free, ect... you know the rap sheet.
 
The secondlife-like things we'll have 30 years from now are going to pretty crazy.

I'm still waiting for the day we have some kind of matter reorganizer (think star trek). Probably wont happen for a few thousand years, if ever, but imagine that. Hunger, no longer a problem. Free energy for everyone. I guess housing would also be free since the materials for it would be there in unlimited quantity. Man, the future better be awesome. I hope the stupid shit we bicker about now will be over with then.
 
Were those modeled in Rhino or any type of NURBS software? Maya maybe?

Believe it or not, before I started in marketing online at the age of 13, I was actually very serious about geometric design with NURBS. From age 11-late 13 that's all I did all day after school and hockey practice. And then I found this gay shit called email spam, and the money potential from it without going to jail (at the time, no laws, for anything) took me out of my designing realm and over to the dark side.

But I'm always fascinated by the design technology developments the internet helped enhance entire industries.

I think virtual worlds will evolve and become more mainstream, but I do not think they will replace or even originate from the web unless they become so ubiquitous that using the web within a virtual world becomes sensible.

But for the purpose of storing, sharing, and searching vast sums of information, I really don't see any way a 3d world that mimics real life can hold an advantage over a 2d world. The physical world has been designed around the human body's spatial requirements. If you shed those requirements in the virtual world, why superimpose them when there's an infinite number of alternate possibilities?
 
i might have missed something since i glanced over it very quickly, but i think apart from the browser engine that is holding back such an interface that you are talking about you have to also consider hardware no? i know its arguable that hardware is gettin cheaper and cheaper but at the same time when you look at the actual % of households that have computers capable of handling a game such as WOW is still considerably low.

although the new generation of teens grew up with the internet and a "decent" computer, alot of households are still prone to not upgrade their systems. as a result a highly interactive system would lag on older boxes. which would then bottleneck the potential number of users that would use such a browser.

this would probably result in a split of the "old/current" style of internet and the "new". on top of how cool it'd be to have such a interactive environment, u'd have to consider how much more practical and efficient it woudl be for the world to adapt to it. rather than it to have ot adapt to the world.
