Time.com: "Having Kids Is Foolish!"

My wife was an RN but quit to be with our child. We don't have a support staff, and she's with her basically every moment, as am I since I work at home. So this idea that you need a support staff is entirely false.
Awesome, sounds like you're doing all that could be hoped for at your present income level. I wish just 1/10th of the world would do the same... What a difference even that would make.

But you've outsourced before, right? Surely you know that you get much better results coordinating a team to do something better than if you try to do it all yourself, right?

My mother inlaw is an extreme christian nutso and shares the same view. That the world is falling to pieces and to have children is an act selfishness because of the impending doomsday scenarios and/or because the world is noticeably deteriorating.
Wow, even "an extreme christian nutso" can see it... Man it must be honkingly obvious! ;)

The world isn't falling apart, the world is a much better place than it was a hundred+ years ago in many ways, and a hell of a lot better than it was 500+ years ago (you know, when many governments were legally allowed to rape any women they chose).
It's a hell of a lot better in many ways, even in parenting, I agree completely. But the math shows we're headed towards a world of shit. Fast.

You can't deprive yourself of having children on the sole account that the world *might* become a disaster; life is about living. If you want children and let that possibility hold you back from having them, you'll live a life of "what if" and regret.
This is your best argument. I'd be a heartless bastard indeed to deny it completely. However there are bigger problems afoot, and I'm only thinking about the quality of life for my child here.

I'm thinking your very negative view on the world is mainly due to your own negative upbringing, and it seems you may need counseling (not being a troll).
Thanks for your concern, seriously. Perhaps you could do a little more reading on the subjects of overpopluation, the carrying capacity of the Earth, and most importantly, GO VISIT one of the already way-too-overcrowded countries like India or China... They will give you a whole new perspective on life. (Literally)

My travels around Asia helped me form these opinions, I don't think I could have come to the same conclusion without seeing streets of flowing shit where people with no shoes had to walk down to get to work... For about a buck a week.

You feel insulated from that world for now, but the growth rates of the world's population won't allow it forever. From Wikipedia:

-From many sources I have seen these estimates are very low and skewed by politics. -And they don't take things into account such as how more technology means extended lifespans...

Spot on.

Most people in the world are on autopilot. They just do what they were taught is normal without thinking about it, and they find all sorts of ways to rationalize it so they don't feel miserable.

No kids for me. At least until I'm like a billionaire in my 60s like Jim Rogers.

Someone mentioned Ted Turner here earlier... Ted wants the poor to sell their 'child bearing rights' to the rich. So that the rich have the kids and the poor drive themselves to extinction.... nice thought eh?
You know, I can't stop thinking about this concept. It's that awesome.

The one problem I see is there would seem to need to be some kind of container, say, a country, for the wealthy to live in, separating out the poor, right? So everyone in the container enjoys super-high quality of life, but can't have any children unless someone outside is sterilized...

Or do you think it best that we just start as is right now, anyone who lives this lifestyle and decides to procreate, finds some young, poor woman off the street to sterilize. (At whatever her asking price is.)

I might consider this option myself... But I can see a few drawbacks. Does anyone here know anything about this? I can't find a link on Ted's wikipedia page to this concept.

Oh yeah, awesome concept.
You know it works, because:
- Poor people never have kids that become succesful.
- All poor people are dumb.
- Dumb people never have smart kids.
- Rich people never have poor kids.
- Smart people never have dumb kids.
- All smart people are rich, all rich people are smart.

No, not perfect, I grant you... Just better than what we got.

What we have now is unsustainable, and as Ted Turner so maniacally said in 2008:

...if steps are not taken to address global warming, within ten years "most of the people will have died and the rest of us will be cannibals.

-Of course I think it's more like 100, but you get the point.

LMAO at this study, at the childless author (and commenters here) and at the always-amusing lukep.

The value of the experience of parenting is as subjective and personal as that of any other personal relationship -- having kids just also happens to be an enforced long-term, super-high-expense project relative to most other kinds of personal relationships. But suggesting that parents are delusional because they think they are happy having kids is like saying that people who are happy with their spouses are clearly delusional, given the number of marriages that end in divorce.

people have kids like their buying a dog, it blows my mind...

I doubt I'll ever want to have kids of my own, I'll leave that to the "normal people", but I do believe I "owe" the gift of life to someone, so I will probably donate a bag of spermies at some point in my life...

I tried to figure a way to say it better. Can't.
