They're both drowning. Which one do you save?

For everyone saving your dog, I'd like to be at the edge of the water, throwing mid-sized stones to your head until you get struck, black out and start going under...now lets see a stray dog save you....

Actually what is ridiculous is that you say guinea pig instead. Guinea pig or human... What does the poll say...?

The fact is I would save a human over any animal I own - apart from my dog. Which, if you read the top of the thread, is what the poll is about. Maybe you could start a new poll about guinea pigs. Yeah. Do it. That'd be riveting. :)

Unless you mean a strangers guinea pig, but that's a whole different kettle of fish.

Okay so it's just your dog that's worth more than stranger's life.

You sure proved your point.

The guinea pig was an example of how absurd your logic is. Since your argument is that the dog is your family, we could say there are people who think the same about their parrots and guinea pigs.

Do you think they're sane if they'd put their pet's life advantage over ANOTHER HUMAN'S life?

Tell me you're a vegetarian or the biggest hipocrite on the face of this planet...unless you eat humans too......

I'm a vegetarian and it would still be a cold day in hell before I chose my dog's life over another human beings. This topic lacks perspective. Because without a shadow of a doubt, any one of the pro-dog partisans would be up in arms should someday their son or daughters fate be left up to one of their own creed. "How could anyone choose their dogs life over my child's?" would be the question asked, and certainly not "Oh, well, that's understandable". Ridiculous.

The fact that himans can knowingly understand good and bad, and do good makes them superior to animals. Animals can not distinguish from right and wrong. They can be trained, but they still don't understand the concepts.

There are two sides to every coin: the fact that humans understand good and bad, and knowingly do bad, perhaps doesn't. Whereas animals can not distinguish from right and wrong and generally do right.

I'd also hate dealing with the legal repercussions for saving a dog while a human was drowning nearby.

::emp::

If I remember correctly, you have no duty of care to the drowning person therefore you aren't obligated to save him/her (assuming it's a stranger). UK law.

I love dogs but,

The human might have a family and people who depend and/or love him/her.
The human brings happiness to more people.
The human has a longer lifespan.
The human has greater overall potential than the dog.
The human is smarter.

There's relatively little chance that the dog is greater than the human all things considered.

I'll tell you one thing...that stranger, never in a million years, would love me 1/2 as much as my dog...and I would never love that stranger, or anyone besides immediate family, more than my dog. To me my dog is my like child, I raised him and took care of him since he was a puppy. So I don't see any difference between my dog, and your child. I also really don't understand why automatically humans > dogs(or animals). Can someone give me a realistic reason for that? I personally dislike being around most humans, and would rather be around their dog, it's just how I am. I'm not really very social with most humans, cause they're all assholes, no dog is an asshole, and if they're mean it's cause of their human owner.

I lol'd

Pretty sure all dogs can swim lol

nope, i've seen many dogs sink right away. mostly english bulldog type builds, where they are very lean, and extremely heavy, but have little legs, they cannot keep themselves above water.

and whoever said dogs swim better than humans, I can tread water for at least 30 minutes given that the water is not too cold to give me hypothermia in that time, I don't know any dog that can swim for 30 minutes. Plus this is not the situation, the situation is they're both drowning so this shouldn't even have been considered. And any human that cannot swim, is no way possible worth more than an animal, how can you not know that basic survival skill?

Devils advocate....

The human might have molested his children
The human could bring more misery to more people
The human could have terminal cancer
The human could be a complete piece of shit. The dog could have been a service dog helping blind people function, sniffing bombs in Iraq etc
I'll give you the last one.

I don't know that there is "relatively little chance". There are a lot of awful human beings out there.

^^^ obviously the human is not smarter than the dog, if they're both in the same situation drowning...

Whenever I've walked my dog, no stranger ever ran up to me and rubbed my neck and baby talked me up. I'm like - where's the love? I could be the one to save your ass some day. Fuck you.

All bullshitting aside, I've actually given this a little thought. The logical part of my brain says human, but in reality I don't know if that's the case. Around a year and a half ago, my dog was diagnosed with lymphoma. I spent nearly 10 grand on chemotherapy etc trying to keep him around for a little longer. He was like a child to me. He died in March of this year. If I met a complete stranger that needed 10 grand for life prolonging medical treatment, I don't think I would give it to them (unless I had tons of disposable income). That situation isn't that much different than the original poll.

My dog protects my house, protects me, loves me, and is always happy to see me.

Just because you're human doesn't mean your life is automatically more valuable than some other animals life, there are 6 billion people on earth so you're going to have to have something better than "but I'm human" if I'm gonna choose you over my dog whom I know and love.
^^ Ditto - DOG!

I think it's equally possible that the human could have been a good person.
