"The Interview" Scrapped. The Terrorists Win.

According to Wired, this is all bullshit.

I was actually surprised not to see a discussion on this forum about the Sony hack when it first happened. The e-mails themselves were juicy enough to warrant a discussion.

Aren't many people in here who seem ahead of this thing at all. Rational posters being irrationally skeptical. There's plenty to read on the event if you're skeptical that will probably give you the facts that you need.

I'd imagine the reason they pulled the plug has to do with losing distribution from the top 5 theatre chains.

I'm sure there are ways around that, but make no mistake - the loss of those commitments is a huge blow.

Don't know why to be skeptic about it considering all the threats, statements NK have already made recently.

This looks like the same New York Times that told us all about yellow cake uranium. Seems legit.

You never know how these nutters over in north korea might react to the whole thing

Probably the same way they react to everything: make noise, do nothing.

North Korea facilitating attacks on American theaters due to the content of a comedy? If that sounds plausible to you, there might be an issue with how you process information.

in b4 SONY releases the movie in Jan / Feb and it becomes the top grossing movie of all time.

the last Hobbit movie was just released and no one is talking about it. Everyone is talking about The Interview.

HYPE HYPE HYPE HYPE HYPE

Hate to break it to you people but North Korea has nothing to do with this.

This is about one thing and one thing only... MONEY.

Every single actor in this is solely motivated by money.

Events;

  • Sony gets hacked.
  • Hackers send ransom demands to Sony.
  • Sony ignores the demands.
  • Hackers start dumping data
  • Media goes in to a feeding frenzy looking for a "story"
  • Sony hires "security" firm to audit damage.
  • Some media outlets make a very tenuous connection to North Korea.
  • Other media outlets run with the idea, because FUD.
  • Hackers start claiming they are "offended" by The Interview.
  • Media starts furiously masturbating to their own bullshit.
  • Sony's hired security firm claims "sophisticated and unprecedented hackers".
  • Media buys this obvious bullshit and runs with it, because FUD.
  • Times blows its load over "sources inside the state department".

Side Notes;

The security firm hired by Sony wasn't hired for their expertise in IT security, they were hired to make it look like Sony was the victim of well organised and highly skilled group of hackers and not that they were hacked by skiddies because Sony was storing usernames and password in fucking Word documents.

The media couldn't give two shits what the actual truth is because the head line "North Korea hacks Sony over the movie The Interview" reads better than "Skiddies hack Sony and demand money".

The skiddies seeing that their extortion attempt failed has started using North Korea as shield to hide behind.

Anyone got more bullshit conspiracy theories while we're at it?

Don't be too offended folks, Sony isn't that All American company you wish it was.

They won't make it past Asia but they could do some serious damage to neighboring countries if they saw fit, so why fuck with them at all?

I don't doubt that if the opportunity presents itself they're not going to take action and movies like this just give them more of a reason.

No, a bullshit conspiracy theory would be saying North Korea had anything to do with this.

But I guess hating on North Korea gives you something to do between giving $5 blowjobs in truck stop bathrooms.

I really don't give a flying fuck who did it, but North Korea being as wacky as they are seem like the #1 candidate for the attack. I can fully believe that a country, built to worship a single dictator, that has concentration camps and will randomly fire artillery upon South Korean islands would take great offence to a film about their leader being assassinated.

The internet is a great equalizer, anyone connected to it can cause immense havoc with enough time and resources - unlike the real world where your armoured beach buggy would last 2 seconds against an Abrahams tank. It's already well known that the Chinese army has special units who's only goal is to break into foreign systems and steal data. It would hardly be a stretch to think that North Korea is doing the same.

Yeah that's nice and all except this is not how those cyber attacks go down and it never has been. It would be an absolute anomaly amongst nation-state cyber warfare to date if North Korea had anything to do this.

The pattern of behavior to date does perfectly match that of "hacktivists" and script kiddy attacks of the past, though.

And implying tank warfare on the Korean Peninsula? Get a grip.

Better get back to that bathroom stall, Galacon is getting ornery.

Whoosh, you totally missed all the points. I never said the North Korean government would admit to such a thing and they have not, because that would up the ante. They have hinted that they approve and given veiled threats. It is very easy to hide yourself on the internet. Ok, let's for a moment say it was "hacktavists", why would they focus so intently on this particular film - it only offends North Koreans?

Wtf you on about tank warfare for? That was an analogy, aka everyone is much more equal online so your high tech reinforced armour don't mean shit like it would it the physical world.

Oh wow alright, so you really haven't been following this story at all but are going to pull the "woosh" line.

Your analogy was shit just like your entire post preceding it. No more to talk about here.

Think long and hard about how ridiculous this sounds.

Sony is a Japanese company, and if you can find a sillier conspiracy theory than "North Korea threatens to blow up US theatres for showing a comedy with Seth Rogen in it" I'd love to hear it.

Yes, well Sony may be Japanese but it has a large base in America and funded the film. Maybe you should check your news sources, nobody ever said movie theatres were going to get blown up. Threats were made to the companies behind them, most likely along the lines of "you've just seen what happened to Sony, cross us and we'll do damage to you"

Think long and hard about how ridiculous this sounds.

Think about how ridiculous North Korea's existence actually is. Really think about it.

Why dismiss them violently acting out over a petty joke at their leader as an impossible act when they have a history of making ridiculous shit happen? Even more so than any other country in existence.

North koreans don't take pictures if kim's statue is below them, they don't cut out newspapers with his picture, have state-approved hair styles, they have to bring flowers, watch his movies, live out his ideals, die for him at his command.. all while never second guessing anything and committing their existence to a version of reality they'll never have the chance to double check. Now, if after decades of this being pounded into your psyche you had someone show you a picture of your dear leader being torn to pieces, wouldn't you go to war in an instant? He could literally do anything.

If a century ago someone let you know how far we'd come today with tech and all, how well connected even the most economically repressed societies would turn out to be. And then told you there'd be a completely isolated country of 25 million whose citizens have absolutely no contact to the outside world, who submit to a ruthless leader they think of as a god and would die at a moment's notice for, wouldn't you quickly dismiss the notion as ridiculous too?
