The hypocrisy of Pace Lattin and industrypace.com

For the past two weeks I've been getting unsolicited emails of blog article updates on industrypace.com. I never signed up to receive emails from industrypace.com but yet here I am getting emails every time he posts a new article.

Since I am not an anti spam zealot and since the email is technically compliant with CAN-SPAM, I didn't make a big stink about it. Hell I allowed the emails to keep coming in. Why not, it's related to the industry I am in right?

Until I decided to check out his website and realized that Pace seems to two tiers of rules. One tier for himself, and one for everyone else.

He seems to love accusing companies of having fraudulent and unethical business practices which in many cases may be true. But some of this things he has a problem with is borderline: For example claiming that all rebill offers are fraudulent, in particular attacking Jesse Willms and his Acai rebills.

Now he is also connecting Jesse Willms with SwipeBids & SwipeAuctions and claiming these online auctions are scams. Gambling maybe, but scams?

He even goes on to say that if a company uses offshore Visa only processing they could be a scam because "This is a good sign of a scam, when a company can’t get one of thousands of processors and credit card companies to work with them".

Well then, I guess Visa loves working with scammers according to Pace.

That wasn't enough for me to get upset though. The guy has a right to have his opinion, even if he is shoving it down my inbox. I can always unsubscribe right?

I scrolled down and noticed the following disclaimer on the bottom of his site: "Comment Policy 8/1/10: It the policy of IndustryPace.com and Pace Lattin to not edit any comments for content or opinion, or to restrict the posting of comments unless they are obvious advertisements or spam or attack a protected class or group. "

Okay sounds reasonable. I'll go ahead and post a comment and the fact that he's emailing me when I never subscribed to his website and that it seems to be violating the spirit of his strong advocacy against unethical business practices.

So I posted the comment and so far he hasn't approved it yet. To be fair though, it hasn't been a full 24 hours.

What do you guys think of him? Maybe I'm being too harsh here, but something is "off" about Pace.

Did Jesse Willms do something something far more sinister than your typical rebill? Did he fail to ship the product out and billed people anyway? Did he disclose the cost of the service in some form on the website?

I guess I should read up more about the bad stuff he did. I am not way defending Jesse Willms if he did anything that's completely criminal.

But if all he did was violate FTC guidelines, then all I have to say is that not all of us are subject to the FTC's jurisdiction.

The fun will begin when you unsubscribe.

Process:

  1. Buy/Scrape E-mail lists
  2. Put everyone on List 1
  3. Send E-mails out on List 1
  4. Someone Unsubscribes to List 1
  5. Place Unsubscribers on List 2
  6. Send E-mails to List 1
  7. Send E-mails To List 2, but slightly change the List Name
  8. Continue Selling to List
  9. Someone Unsubscribes to List 2
  10. Place Unsubscribers on List 3
  11. Continue until Unsubscribers submit and keep buying your shit
  12. Profit

Okay it sounds like Jesse Willms rips off other people's stuff since he was sued for software piracy and other things of that nature. Ripping off someone else's work is NOT cool. I hope my OP didn't sound like I was defending this guy.

Pace just loves to jump the gun with stuff and it came off as really weird considering the sudden emails I started receiving from his website.

Also Gooddeal and dchuk, nice work demonstrating your ability to post photos. Maybe next time instead of trolling, try contributing.

Wasn't pace banned from here for being a doucher?

Indeed he was. Maybe a year ago or so? Playing the guru "holier than thou" card, constant shameless promotion of his blog that no one cared about, thumping his chest because he thinks he's someone in the industry etc etc (if memory serves).

I can say with 100% certainty that some of them are. At the last company I worked at my boss bought a script to run one of those penny bid sites. It had an autobidder feature built into it to keep the bids going if time expired. Because of that combined with the difficulty of forecasting the cash flow of the site, he decided to do nothing with it.

I started getting the same emails from him about 2 weeks ago or so. Don't care though because it is all going to a throw away, but from the looks and sound of it, he is definitely scraping and emailing without permission so he should shut the fuck up about what other people do.

Hey guys, I think I was too hard on Pace. He has a very popular blog and has a right to express an opinion on it.

Besides he's 100% spot on when it comes to Jesse Willms. I did not have all of the facts, and now I do.

His marketing practices are fine, and no he didn't "scrape" people's email addresses. He probably obtained a list of active pubs and figured they would appreciate the public service he is providing. There is nothing wrong with that.

I invite all of you to check out Articles - IndustryPace.com - Interactive Advertising Insight and give it a second look. It's really grown on me and I understand where the guy is coming from now.
