Get Parallels for your mac so you can run Windows, then you can run all of the free shit above.

Two free winners if you're trying to research IM and collate sources from the web and from pdf files:

Zotero (plugin for firefox)
That sorts out your website research.
I wouldn't add pdfs directly to its library though.
What I'd do is add a link to relevant pdfs that are on your hard drive and use...

This is a great pdf viewer and annotator (and even has limited editing), but that's not the reason I use it. Click on the binoculars next to the normal search box, and you get the best document search I've ever seen.
 
textpad.com (By far my favorite notepad like editor - make sure and enable the syntax highlighting for programmers, just add *.css and stay stylesheeting, or .cgi/.pl for perl5 or .php for pho, tons of other langs as well.. Block Highlighting, regexp replace (in multiple docs), opens very large files (100mb+ very quickly).

Vlc Player (Amazing Media Player - Movies etc - has an option to make a movie your windows background - totally useless but also amazing)

Download details: Virtual PC 2007 - Sometimes I use a Vistual Machine to test different shit. I could care less about getting any sorts of virus infections on my virtual machine. Just simply store a clean copy of windows on your HD and keep replacing the virtual machine that you have been fucking with when you need a clean machine.

CDBurnerXP: Introduction and News - I use this shit to burn CDs and DVDs. Fuck Nero.

BooZet Freeware | Double Driver - backup and restore installed drivers - If you need a driver backup this is the shit. I have used this software to backup all of my drivers before I made the move to wipe the machine.

PDFCreator | Get PDFCreator at SourceForge.net - Great to use if you want to print directly to a PDF printer. I have been using this software for years.

FileZilla - The free FTP solution - Awesome software for FTP

Google Chrome - Get a fast new browser. For PC, Mac, and Linux - Kick ass web browser. I know there's a blown down version without the privacy concerns. I forget what it's called.

My DebugBar | IETester / Browser Compatibility Check for Internet Explorer Versions from 5.5 to 8 - If you are a developer you will find this software VERY useful. I have used this software to debug previous versions of IE. There's nothing like developing something with FF and Chrome and finishing shit up only to find out it's not working correctly in previous versions of IE. This will save you some time.

apache friends - xampp - I know somebody had mentioned WAMP above, but you may also want to look into xampp. This is what I use and I've been using it for awhile now. Nice interface and it works great. No more hassle trying to install PHP and MySQL.

Roadkill disk wipe - It will do a double, triple, quadrouple Gutman on any drive (including USB). Obviously sensitive shit needs to go in the garbage, but Recuva couldn't find any recoverable files after using this puppy on my flash drive.

Dban disk wipe - This comes the most highly recommended as far as HD wipers go -- It doesn't have any functionality for anything other than PC hard drives.. I'm going to wipe an old drive with this and then reinstall Ubuntu on it.

Edit: Maybe there are better "paid" alternatives" -- who knows?
 
PSPad is a great code editor. FTP is built in. Lots of features, pro level. No WYSIWYG.

Look for the link to latest build in the forum at the bottom of the "current version" post on that page, dev continually updates.
