Thailand

My question is: what do ladyboys get out of tricking people? One of my buddies that has been there says they do it purely for money, but theres got to be more to it.

They don't really trick people, they just being themselves.
Same goes for gays I think.

Because they're the dregs of society, and nobody will hire them, so they all resort to being lieing, scamming thieves. Unless they're stunningly gorgeous and land a gig in a theater show or something, this is a group of people that can't even get a job at McDonalds most times.

In haiti a haircut will run you 50 gourdes/ 1.50 dollar US

How Haiti people survive charging $1.5 for haircut ? In my country (poor one) it costs like...mmm.. $7+ in average for quite basic male one

the average haitian lives on less than 1 dollar US a day. that is why the price for a haircut is 1.50. you charge what the average person can afford. higher end shops charge 100 gourdes /2.50 us and higher end aristocrat shops could charge 300-500 gourdes.

I think $1.50 US for a haircut actually sounds expensive for Haiti. You can get a haircut for 20 pesos in the Philippines which is less than $0.50 US. I have had both a haircut and a straight razor shave there for less than $1 US.

So how about some other things like Land, construction materials, Guns, ammo, tools, and Liquor, Mark?

Things that you have to buy to make your compound self-sufficient? Are those better or worse than in the west?

Land is not cheap. If you compare rural Thailand to rural America you can get cheaper land in rural America.

Some construction materials are pretty cheap, like cement. Others like steel track global market prices. Cost of hiring heavy equipment like a back hoe is pretty cheap.

Utilities (electricity, water) are cheaper, at least compared to southern California where I came from.

Gas and diesel for your vehicles are similar to U.S. prices. However, if you have a vehicle that runs on LPG or NGV those are pretty cheap at least as long as the gov continues to subsidize them.

Guns are very expensive. Something simple like a S&W .38 Chief's Special costs US$2,000. Ammo for it costs $2 per round.

Tool prices are about the same as the west.

Electronics are higher, things like timers, solenoids, light switches, cctv cameras that you would use to automate things around your compound are pretty expensive.

Liquor is higher. Good wines are much higher and the selection is dismal. Cigars are higher but you can buy real Cubans unlike in the U.S., although I read that if you are a U.S. citizen and smoke a Cuban even outside the U.S. you are breaking the law, which makes me want to smoke one even more (look-out-we-got-a-bad-ass-over-here.jpg)

Good thing I'm a renter.

...Then again, my brother in BKK is paying $5,000 US a month for his flat near Central World.

How about all of that shitty, knotty lumber that goes in houses? What kind of wood is that anyway, can't be pine...

FFFFFFFFFFFfffffffffffffffUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!!!!!

I just got a new appreciation for your meager gun collection you told us about last year.

LOL. A little birdie I knew in a former life sold Cubans here in the south... They were like $15 each back then. Are cubans still considered the gold standard in Thailand? -I'd always assumed that they were considered the best here because of the scarcity thing.

Yeah, rents are often pretty high for something nice even up-country. Next door to my house which is 2 hours outside of Bangkok there is a new 4 bedroom house that rents for 40,000 baht per month.

I don't know what that wood is. There are many grades. The best stuff which is really nice is illegally cut in neighboring countries.

Not sure how Thais rank cigars as there aren't many smokers and only a few outlets like Siam Havana.

Whoa, $1294? that's almost exactly what I'm paying for rent here in Kansas with a brand new 2 BR 2 BA apartment @ about 1100 square feet... Amazing. How nice is that place?

It's pretty nice. 4 big bedrooms with two king size beds in each and a nice fenced yard. Doesn't have much style, however. Sort of a big square box of a house and minimal Thai style kitchen. But it's in a nice area near Khao Yai National Park, not stuck in the middle of a village that looks like a slum.

Ah, that's more like it. I wouldn't mind renting like that one day if I don't have to upkeep the house and mow the lawn and all that stuff.

Then again, the commute to eat at the loft every day would suck bigtime. ;( I just don't see how I'm ever going to live away from town.

It's really not as bad as it sounds. I once lived 30 min from the nearest town. It sucked trying to buy ice cream at the grocery store, but that was about it. I don't mind being completely by myself out in the middle of no where though.

The best part is fishing or killing something to eat everyday, but then again not everyone likes that.

i agree that is expensive if you are part of the 80 percent who makes less than 1500 US a year but when i compare that to the USA where a haircut runs you 15-20 US./25 with a tip then Haiti is pretty damn cheap when we speak in regards to the western world.
I worked for the Nepali UN for a awhile and the troops would always act shocked at the prices in the country. that got me thinking maybe the middle class life i live in the west indies could be something better in a different place.

Thailand is now on Google street view in case any of you likes to cruise around

Not much of it is. Even Google Maps has satellite imagery that is more than 10 years old for much of the country. Pretty poor effort.

I thought they update satellite imagery data like once an year or so. I've seen some places (not Thailand) and it didn't look that old, but maybe it varies a lot for different countries.

Yeah saw the cars outside MBK last week.
