Thailand

check out cost of living, standards of living, and respective PPIs... It varies country by country. In Thailand luxury items - for one - are much more expensive, as others have mentioned...

It depends on your standard of "king."

You can definitely get damn good massages for ~$6/hr and plenty of great food and housing at ~1/5-1/3 the cost... If that does it for you, enjoy.

There is no middle class almost in 3rd world, there are rich and poor. That's why it called 3rd world btw - explanation to those who are plain stupid

Your etymology is incorrect.

Decent? Close to public transport like mrt/bts? 20,000 - 35,000 baht and up. Somerset, Kempinski Residence and co will start at 90,000 baht for 1BR.. and thats DECENT.

With that in mind you should consider poland an alternative.

this man says a good apartment is 4-9000 but again i think our view of what good is i currently have a place away from the city center and i am fine with that, is very different. yes he does mention 15-20 thousand baht on places near the trains but i simply would not move to the city center

Rent prices in Thailand are very, err... diversified. Sure, if you go through a property management company, or walk into the rental office of a brand new high-rise in BKK, then yeah, you're going to pay Western prices if not more. On the flip side, if you're ok with something a little older, and going through a private owner instead of a large development company, then you'll save yourself 70% or more.

haha seriously? you can get a good one bedroom apartment close to the bts or mrt for 15,000THB a month. fully furnished with a king size bed, 40" tv and maybe 5 years old at the most.

look around thong lo bts in bangkok, lots of very nice new condo buildings that are barely 20% full, so owners will heavily discount the rent if you want them to. 5 minute walk to public transport and the best area for food and drinking if that's your thing.

prakard.com has lots of well priced rental condos that are mostly rented direct from owners

Truth. I've been living in Thailand for 10 years. Sure it's cheap if you live like a peasant. But anything and everything that is a step up from that is *more* expensive than in the west. Cars are 3x as Offshore said. Electronics are all higher price. You can get a plate of fried rice for US$1 but when you get bored of that prepare to pay dearly for a crappy pizza and if you want a decent steak you'll have to search high and low and pay through the nose. Decent bottle of wine will run you at least $30 when it would cost you less than $10 in the U.S.

Sage advice. Lived in thailand, wife is thai - all i can say, is quality costs no matter where you live in the world. Its fun eating pad thai for $1 for a few weeks, and staying in basic accomodation, but sooner or later it gets old.

A good quality life style can still be had for cheaper than in the west, but not that much cheaper.

maybe your goal should be more than 18K a year if you want to live like a king? Seems kind of silly to expect a wage below poverty level in america would allow you to live like a king anywhere other than the past.

Hey Bro.. I heard that the Asian chicks love Whites. But do they like Asians foreigners too ?? I am asking coz I am Asian too :-) and I am planning to visit there without the wife :D

PS: I do OK with gals in general..

It's definitely an advantage to be foreigner and Asian. You still need decent game though for the hot chicks.

Thai chicks really like Chinese / Korean Asians, but Filipinos / Indians / Cambodians have a lot harder time. (Basically light skin vs. dark skin)

What a lot of people don't know is that literally 1/5 of the Thai male population is gay. I've never been to a place with so many single women.

listen to what all the people who are from the region are saying, it is much cheaper for basic cost of living than the western world.
i know so many of you americans and europeans who will come to Haiti and pay triple for what a local pays simply because you do not understand the economy and you are taken for a ride not even knowing it.
In haiti a haircut will run you 50 gourdes/ 1.50 dollar US but i see these canadians paying 300-500 gourdes around 12 dollars US.
it tried to warn them but they kept bragging how cheap it is and i said no man they ripped you off.
all i know is i will listen to the locals and the people posting on here who are from the region before i will listen to europeans and americans who have different standards of living and who do not mind paying tripple the price for basic goods.

Since sex reassignment surgery in Thailand is now so advanced that a fake vag is now essentially indistinguishable from the real thing, here are some tips to identify ladyboys:

1. Height: Thai girls are small-framed. Treat any tall-and-large's with suspicion.

2. Hands: One of the biggest giveaways, unless the he was born with unusually small hands (and even the index/ring finger ratio can't be completely trusted here as men with low testosterone tend to have female ratios, and it's usually the guys with low testosterone who are more likely to become ladyboys in the first place).

3. Voice and Adam's apple.

None of the above are foolproof unfortunately, especially if gender reassignment took place during childhood. If in doubt, carry around those things that CSI investigators carry that indicates whether a sample of blood is male or female.

How Haiti people survive charging $1.5 for haircut ? In my country (poor one) it costs like...mmm.. $7+ in average for quite basic male one

Maybe there is just nothing to buy even with $1500 a month, no things to spend money on at all that's why it's kings level ? otherwise I don't get it.

The way that poorer countries work is overcharging on luxury goods and having cheap ass basic goods. This is economics 101: the smaller your market (in this case, the rich), the more you can afford to charge them for luxury goods. This is why in places like America, we can get $500 iPads when they cost a couple of grand in places like Brazil & Russia: because you can get more money through volume and opening up the market to people who can afford it.

I never expected Thailand to be "cheap" besides the food & other stuff. But that's not why I'm going there to begin with.

About a month ago I actually looked into bringing in a Jeep Wrangler. Don't want a huge truck because of the small streets, and don't want a car because of the villages, so figured a Jeep would be perfect.

283% import tax though. Fuck me... guess I won't be getting my Jeep.

Hua Hin is like the most boring place on earth.. only old retired people and full of bangkokians on the weekends. Phuket is full of russian scum (oh the irony) but has plenty of beaches, hookers and a real city to offer. Samui is more laid back and should suit you best. Bangkok is just like any other big city in asia. If your not a total douchebag like some of these other "ballin" affiliates you wont end up with a ladyboy licking your shaft or some shit like that. Theres plenty of better places than thailand.. people only come here for the easy girls or because they are poor. 90% of the so called webmasters that live here are broke as fuck and thats exactly why they live in in shitty ass places in thailand.
Go to Singapore, South Korea.. way more fun than thailand.

Thumbs up for Singapore, I really liked my short-stay there :)

the average haitian lives on less than 1 dollar US a day. that is why the price for a haircut is 1.50. you charge what the average person can afford. higher end shops charge 100 gourdes /2.50 us and higher end aristocrat shops could charge 300-500 gourdes.
All i need is a good aprtment with running water and current, clean clothes and shoes, transportation fare, good water and food, some money to pay my maids, a little extra for cigars, rum, and going to the beach.

Just buy a Fortuner or a Pajero. They're both pretty nice and because there are lots of them you can get them serviced easily. The Jeep would be a problem.

Note the weirdo pricing between the different classes of cars. A Fortuner costs about 1.2 million baht wile a Lexus RX430 costs about 5 million baht, nearly 5X the price.

So how about some other things like Land, construction materials, Guns, ammo, tools, and Liquor, Mark?

Things that you have to buy to make your compound self-sufficient? Are those better or worse than in the west?

Awesome.. Works for me..
I just have to be wary of the Lady boys. I have had gays hittin on me about 3-4 times. Funny but true.

Ladyboy Test | Discover Thailand

Well no one else did it.

Seriously though, a friend of mine is trying to get residence out there, hes a dive instructor and has been able to find frequant work and loves the place, only problem he has is the general 'so your a pervert then' expression he gets back in the UK when he tells people where he lives.
.

My question is: what do ladyboys get out of tricking people? One of my buddies that has been there says they do it purely for money, but theres got to be more to it.
