I hate when you tell a friend how much you make, then they tell you to "Hook them up" or make them something with your time that would earn them money, when with the same effort (or less) you could be making that money yourself.

I've had a few of those. Fortunately, all of them forgot about it eventually, before I could get annoyed with it.

over-optimizing or pointing too many links to a domain too quickly and affecting my SERPs.

Oh fuck, yes, I totally forgot about that one and the fact that my main site has been under a kind of google penalty for over a year because of that!

Be careful with getting links to your site as it can really bite you in the ass if you add them all too quickly, all pointing to the main page and with too little variation in your anchor text.

now that you've done it, you might as well scratch that domain as far as google goes. You'll make more by keeping that up and taking advantage of MSN & Y!'s spam tollerance. Then start another domain with G in mind with much less agressive SEO for the long run.

Yep. This has been my biggest business mistake ever.. Twice in fact! I lost over $12k from two ventures, and from both, all I got were these shitty chairs, so I label them my $12k chairs, and don't let anyone sit in them. But I keep them in my office as a reminder to myself that next time you want to go into business with a friend.. DON'T DO IT. Money changes everything when friends are involved.

Amen Jon - Didn't Will Rogers say, "I am not so concerned about the return on my investment, as much as the return of my investment"

Chairs - that's funny - I have a couple of email folders that will have me pissing bricks if I read through them.. to remind me of the several thousands lost of BS "Joint-Ventures"

I'm not sure I'll do that just yet - it's not a total ban, there's a major upgrade in progress and I'll take my chances with the reinclusion request when it's finished.

Is there anything that Google won't penelize you for? So I suppose submitting to 100s of directories in a hurry would be a bad thing then?

whats to fast and too many?- ive not really had a problem yet and i have always gone link mad in the past (always changed my anchor text often though)
Like to know how far i can push it :D

I think one of the stupidest mistakes was when Yahoo started demanding hundreds to get a site listed in their directory. That directory used to be really great and then they just gave away their market share to Google.

there's no definiate number in any period of time, if there was, google wouldn't be so difficult to rank in. it's fine if you're gettin hundreds of links from authority sources with varied anchor text to outweigh the crap.

but something like getting a thousand links overnight from all spammy domains is sure to get you a penalty.
