Every single story I have read about Sony this year is negative. First I heard the PS3 was going to cost almost double that of XBox360, then I saw pictures of it and it looked like a giant computer case. Then there is the little problem with Sony batteries exploding in Macs and Dells, which is reported to cost them up to $250 million.

Now I read a story on Gamespot -- "When asked his opinion of the PS3's competitors, Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Nintendo's Wii, Kutaragi was blunt. "We don't care," he flatly told the trade."

Anyone want to take bets on how many years before Sony goes under? I think its a sure bet that PS3 is going to come in third place under 360 and Wii. I am betting the blu-ray will be a flop too.

So what should we give Sony, another 2 or 3 years?
 


I dont think they'll ever go under, but they're going to lose significant market share over the next few years.
 
In a few years Sony will probably have to lay off alot of employees. Once PS3 does bad and blu-ray starts fucking up Sony better start realizing they aren't some pimp technology company like they think they are.

Hehe, either way I need some extra cash so I might wait outside for a ps3 and try selling it for a ton more on ebay :)
 
They will definately lose marketshare in the gaming industry. but they are by no means going under. They have so many other revenue streams besides gaming consoles and laptop batteries. If anything their shareholders aren't going to be too happy with them.
 
I just think the blu-ray is going to be another nice flop like a good portion of sony's other media. Remember the mini disc? I hated that shit.

last I heard gaming consoles was their only stream of income that gave a significant profit. Everything else is minimal compared to how much they spend. But I read this two years ago or so, not sure about now.
 
I saw a graph of the profits from sony's electronics division -- it was in the red since about 2000/2001 after massive profits for the 5 years preceding it. Wish I remembered where the hell I saw that...

Last year they had a net income of $123 million on revenue of 7.4 billion along with about 1 billion of debt. Doesn't look so hot.

they've been fucking consumers for years

remember that shitty ATRAC format? if you bought a sony mp3 player they would force you to convert all your songs to ATRAC before you could play them

if your sony laptop broke down they'd use every trick in the book to rip you off
my friend called them for a hard drive replacement, and they said the estimated cost is $400!.. two days later I ordered the hard drive for him from newegg for $80

Sony is one of the leaders behind the DRM scum they're trying to force onto consumers.. RIAA and MPAA are sponsored by companies like Sony. the sooner Sony will die, the better off the consumer will be.

shit. I thought they were doing better than that. They don't have the products that would bring a turn around either.

Then there is that 7 million battery recall, an early estimate was $250 million +. The damage to the brand is terrific as well.
 
Sony is probably more worried about being the makers of batteries for almost every laptop in the world and having to recall them all. :)

And you know what, i'll still buy a PS3. Why? Because PlayStation's kick some major fucking ass! Who had a better console than the ps1? Yea that N64 rocked with its 32 bit processor. Oh, the PS2? Who had a true 64 system? I couldn't even answer my own question.

PS3's Cell Processor? Have you even researched that? Not to mention their LCD TVs/monitors.

Just because they have shit batteries doesn't make them a belly flopping corporation. How many other name brand electronics distributor has a contract with the # game developer in the world?

Yea SQUARE has the highest sales for any RPG game and Sony has exclusive rights to any FF full fledged release.

Can you play FF IV, V, VI, VII, VII X, XI on your xbox? nah probably not.
 
I would take a dreamcast over a ps1 any day.

I appreciated my xbox a lot more because of how much I was able to mod it. Portable Media Center, Thousands upon thousands of roms for NES/SNES/Genesis/Mame, and gaming console all in one. With all of this shit on the hard drive!
 
Blu-Ray is going to be a flop. Not only that, it is hurting the DVD market. DVD was doing gangbuster business, but once word that a new, better format was coming along, DVD sales started to decline. The majority of consumers thought they were buying an archival type format. Not something that would be replaced only 10 or so years after it was introduced.

I think the PS3 will do okay though. It's overpriced but it's going to have some really cool games. It's interesting to see Sony taking the high price point and Nintendo taking the low, leaving Microsoft with the midpriced unit. It will be really interesting to see how this plays out.

Inevitable takeover?

I'm a big fan of Sony, going back to the beginning of the Walkman. No matter what type of electronics you're into, Sony is there with a sleek product, albeit not necessarily the best.Sony is a much more complete Global brand ni 2006, with products that reach far beyond plain consumer electronics.

I doubt they're going anywhere anytime soon, though Samsung may try to make a move ?
 
Anyone that thinks Sony is going under has been hittin the pipe!!!

SonY is going to take over the world, by 2010 every PC will be running Sonys OS version of windows, called doors! And you will no longer be driving around in a honda civic anymore, but a Sony Sivic! Sony will without a doubt take over the world as we know it!

By this year that I speak of 2010, Sony will control markets in everything from sneakers, to dildos, to cars and computer software!

Mods

I guess you haven't figured out to mod a PS yet then. I can play many games and more on my ps2 how bout you? I even recall playing burned games on my ps1. Have you ever seen an xbox mod before the ps1? Wait... have you seen an xbox before the PS1? Haha fuck no! Mods aren't platform independent

Man I go for underdogs way too much, was very anti-ps2 this generation, but now that everyone is bashing the ps3, i want it more and more :)

I'll give you the RPG's, because FF is a good series. I stopped playing it at 7 though. FPS are what I play, and the playstation controller just flat out sucks donkey balls for FPS games. The xbox takes the cake there, the controller is perfect for shooters. The PS3 does have a good thing going for it, being that I believe GTA IV will be a launch title with it. I'll buy a PS3 to play Unreal on it though, even though the controller sucks ball.

Don't forget about Halo though.:338:
