About 6 months ago I made a stupid bet. "I bet you can't grow your hair for 6 months, in fact if you do I'll quit smoking"

Today is 6 months...

11 hours without a smoke, anyone care to join me and see who can go the longest? cmon someone must have made this a new years resolution.

As a background, I've been at a pack a day for the last 2 years.

p.s. anyone who mentions allen carr's easy way i'll kick in the face.

J/K, have you looked into e-cigs at all? There was a thread a week or so ago w/ people talking about how they've helped them quit.

Hey man, just fuckin hang in there guy.

I quit May 1st, 2010 cold turkey... the first week is ABSOLUTE FUCKING HELL.

Cancel any appointments or meetings, get a bunch of junk food and sit around on the couch until you feel well enough to go back to the outside world.

Avoid alcohol for a couple weeks at least. Drinking + smoking go hand in hand (or atleast they did for me).

This is coming from a 2+ pack a day smoker (3+ when coding) who quit cold turkey successfully over 8 months ago.

You also have to come to the realization "I am never going to have another cigarette again for the rest of my life" --- pretty shocking, huh? Once you can accept that fact, you're golden.

  1. I'm proud of you.
  2. Some people find that Sunflower (with shells) seeds or M&M's are a good substitute.
  3. You just need something to keep your hands occupied.
  4. Once the urge has been fulfilled, you won't crave a "fix" for awhile.
  5. Consider getting up early and running. It'll tired your body and strengthen your mind to resist the urge.
  6. The first 2 weeks are the hardest. Make it through them and you can take it a day at a time much easier.

haha you're absolutely right about canceling everything and secluding yourself till your ready to face the outside world.

On the flipside this is gonna be a very productive week once I can get my mind off the supposed difficulty of this - and back into my work.

Anyone care to join in? hmmmm?

That's right I'm calling yo pussy ass out - ;)

Thanks Rex,

I appreciate that man. I'll definitely grab some seeds/start running once I'm good to leave the house :D

I quit smoking roughly two years ago cold turkey. Good luck.

If you try cold turkey, make sure you toss all your smoking paraphernalia. Don't keep an emergency pack or stick "just in case." I had 'quit' several times before, but always kept one stick stashed away, and also kept cases, lighters, etc. This time, I just tossed my cigarette case and Dupont lighter, as well as all tobacco products in my home. Also, I stopped drinking coffee and alcohol, since those two beverages were mentally associated with smoking for me.

I was going through a divorce at the time. Contrary to commonsense, that depressed mindset actually helped, since I was too fucked up to get off my couch and buy a pack. This strategy is not recommended.

Get some Skoal Bandits and throw one in when you can't fight the urge. This will help ween yourself from the addiction mechanism of having to light up. That's how I did it. Took me a couple of months but it worked.

I quit cold turkey nearly 2 years ago from a 2 pack a day habit.

Now i can't stand the slightest smell of smoke, it's disgusting.

I just got back from a 5 week vacation where I smoked like a chimney. Prior to that I hadn't smoked cigarettes for 17 months. Today (so far) is my first day of no smoking (not even a cigar).

So we're basically starting together. Let's ride it out. I'm doing fine w/ nic. gum and avoiding morning/afternoon coffee (that's my biggest crutch: coffee and butts).

Keep in mind when you get a craving, that cravings only last a few minutes. After that it will be hours until your next craving. (Time between cravings will increase and become fewer and fewer).

After a week the automatic cravings are over, because your body no longer has any nicotine in it.

The next thing you look out for are psychological triggers. These are usually caused by stressors, and are the main reason for relapse 2 months, 6 months, 2 years later.

The longer you smoked, the more psychological triggers you will be "retraining" as they come.

Maybe it's just me, I don't know, but I've been smoking probably an average of 10 cigarettes per day from age 14 (so that's 5 years of smoking) and show minimal signs of addiction. Periods of that I've smoked 20/day consistently and periods less but I'd guess that I've probably smoked an avg of 10/day.

I can go a day without a cigarette, it's not a massive problem for me. I go a day without a cigarette on a semi-regular basis (probably once/month) and although I'm agitated and craving the feelings really aren't that strong and are fairly easily ignored. Whereas some people seem to smoke for like half a year and are suddenly really addicted..

Why don't I quit you ask? Well I have cut down massively recentley but I don't think I could quit very easily for the simple fact that I go out on the weekends and most people, certainly all of my friends, smoke. Plus the fact that cigarettes are for whatever reason awesome when drunk doesn't help.
