Whether the Bible thumpers are true or not doesn't matter. Science is science, and a perceived attack on science is no justification for making ignorant claims to defend it.
Fact is, there is direct evidence of some instances of evolution, then there is only circumstantial evidence of other kinds of evolution. Ie hypotheses and fossils. You cannot compare the quality of this evidence to actual, verifiable, repeatable, documented instances of evolution as it happened. The quality of these two kinds of evidence is vastly, vastly different.
Any attempt to lump them together reveals nothing but an alarming lack of understanding of the nature of evidence and logic and a blind, dogmatic worship of science textbooks.
This is why we need to teach philosophy in high school.
