OnStar begins spying on customers

It doesnt matter if you opt out you need to actually physically disconnect the unit (usually in trunk) and then pull your cell phone battery if you dont want people to have the ability to track you.

I actually don't want someone to track my kids and/or wife more than anything. 99% of the time I am at home :)

I'm curious as to where all the libertarians on the board will stand on this. :)

A libertarian should have no problem with Onstar doing this.

Companies have every right to do whatever they want with the data they collect and consumers have every right to respond by not buying the companies product.

I certainly won't be buying any car with Onstar.

Whoa! Nope. That is not libertarianism.

First of all, there is a problem here with regard to the collusion of GM and the US government. That is the first problem. Second the oft quoted "your rights end where my nose begins" I think sums up the problem here. No one knew that this data was being collected. It's a violation of both the spirit and words of contracts. This sort of bullshit only happens when fascists are in power.

OnStar Begins Spying On Customers’ GPS Location For Profit | Jonathan Zdziarski's Domain

Have a GM vehicle? Your info will be sold off to companies and given to cops. This includes gps location, seatbelt usage, speed, and more. Even after you cancel the service they will do this. Wtf?

No surprise here. It's bad enough the cars ecu (electronic control unit) can already be used against you -- they record speed (via length of time and percentage of throttle opening, if my memory serves on how it is done). Hey, its a computer chip in the car.

Not saying that I speed; but I have been known to shut my cell off when I drive. And when I do upgrade to a new smart phone, the battery will come out of that bitch when I'm behind the wheel.

I've read that Progressive actually offers a discount if you let them monitor your car's 'black box': the ecu. Though I haven't checked on this personally yet.

Yup - it's called the Progressive Snapshot Program.

People have become surprisingly unconcerned about their loss of privacy, and that's just the way our slavemasters like it.

That's because it's dressed up as "security", "convenience", "safety", or "cheaper".

Most people aren't discerning enough to say "yes, but what's the real cost?"

The fact the data is there to be subpoenad is hidden in the privacy policy. Yes, they may not track GPS or driver data, but that stuff can be done by cross reference.

Yup - it's called the Progressive Snapshot Program. Been seeing commercials for it lately. This isn't as scary as the thought that these types of things will be commonplace and widely accepted in the next few years, and I wouldn't be surprised if they become required to even get insurance soon. It will probably start with new drivers and those with points until eventually we all have to have it.

Fuck thats probably worse than the onstar deal. These companies can pretty much go fuck themselves. There are alot of paranoid people out there (myself included)and shit like this needs to get squashed before its able to take on a life of its own. I would never agree to shit like this yet the average person don't give 2 shits and will just "plug it in" to save $10 on their insurance

The rift between the smart and the stupid is certainly going to get much wider.

How wide can it go?

Has anyone read "The Time Machine?"

Why not?

That's so stupid. You should be able to sue for invasion of privacy. I use to have OnStar in my Nissan Altima when my ex wife was driving it before we got divorced. She had to use it only once when she locked her keys in the car so they could unlock it. Between this kind of stuff and these red light cameras, when does it end?

I'm surprised everyone that's posted so far thinks Onstar is the only problem. There is a little device almost everyone carries around with them that has a GPS for 911 tracking -- no saying 100's of cell phone providers aren't selling that data...

^I know exactly how to turn off all GPS usage in my smartphone and I keep it in that state 100% of the time I'm not using it for directions. There's a huge difference here.

I don't understand the issue. If they do this and you don't like it, don't drive their cars.

With no cops who arbitrarily assess fines for arbitrary statutes there would be less of an issue, if an issue at all. There is a reason why traffic courts do not have juries...

911 don't use GPS, they use triangulation... that's something that can't be turned off.

interesting, watch google buy Onstar in the near future.

Shit like this that makes me consider a horse-drawn carriage.

I'm with you

at first i thought, bunch of paranoid fucks ITT who probably want bigger gov to protect them...

and then i read the new onstar terms and conditions, found here

wtf... wtf indeed

edit: anyone with onstar ACTIVATED or NOT ACTIVATED read that ^^^^^

What the fuck are you talking about? There was an uproar when Onstar changed their terms of service to say they could sell the data. Onstar never sold the data they collected before this ToS change.

Exactly what bullshit happened (and what contract has been violated)? Onstar changed their policy, told everyone that they changed their policy, and now as a consumer you are free to no longer use their product. That's how free market capitalism works, and a real libertarian would have no problem with that.

And what about the government collusion? You're pretending like that doesn't matter at all. It's not a free market. The government has huge interests in GM.

And what everyone here is saying is basically you aren't free to no longer use their products.
