Obama - 'Gay Couples Should Be Able to Get Married'

Not sure how it is in the US, but I'd rather the word marriage just be removed from all policies and legislation completely and replaced with civil unions (or whatever word you'd like to use). That way the churches can do whatever the fuck they want and my gay friends can get the same benefits as my straight friends when they are in a committed relationship.

I can't even believe we are still even having this conversation in Australia, makes me sick to my stomach. Everybody knows it's going to happen eventually, it's just a matter of time.

I largely agree with you, though I think their is a much deeper problem at play here.

Unless I'm mistaken, there's nothing stopping churches from marrying same sex couples. Marriage is the union of 2 individuals, and to some, god as well. So can someone remind me why government is involved in marriage anyway?

I assume most gay couples want one of 2 things from marriage:

1. So they can then get the same benefits as straight couples that have also gotten their meaningless paper from the local courthouse. I'm guessing most fall into this category.

2. So they can "make it official" in the eyes of the State. In which case I'd say their naive for putting so much faith and authority in a system that has denied them rights that others have been allowed to enjoy for so long.

I think you too are naive to believe that changing "marriage" to "civil union" would do a damn thing, other than maybe appease the religious nuts. Temporarily at least.

My solution?

Stop giving benefits to married couples altogether. Better yet, get rid of fucking taxes, and none of this would be an issue in the first place.

Make marriage a religious ceremony only with no legal standing. Churches and religious people can define it how they want.

Allow consenting adults to enter into whatever legal contracts, partnerships or civil unions they want.

Problem solved.

Nature will also let gays reproduce one day. Fuck you nature how dare you only let a man and a woman reproduce. If two people love each other they should be able to reproduce. Nature is a bigot.
Now I know there's some goat fuckers in here, so I'm going to say it. Keep your fucked up unnatural sex life in your bedroom. I dont want to hear about it. Yes goats have a nice beard and horns you can hold on to when you're giving it raw.

How kind and benevolent of him to state his opinion on a matter no government should have any kind of say in.

16+ Trillion in Debt, how will the us pay this off? At some point it will be so high that it would be almost impossible to QE out of... i mean you would have to print too much to pay it down to a low enough level....

Tina Fay hit it on SNL Weekend Update a few years ago when Mass passed gay marriage:

because you know those gay guys would go all out. We’re talking about designer wedding cakes, $20,000 sleeveless tuxedos, giant naked man ice sculptures that pee mojitos. They’d hire Patty LaBelle as the band, give out African parrots as party favors. It would be reDONCulous! So, remember, whatever your political beliefs, a vote to allow gay marriage is a vote for a fabulous economy!”

I'm not from the US but I've been seeing some Republicans getting very worked up about it on the news so I've got to ask... It's not mandatory is it?

Instinctively, I'm pro gay marriage. I have no issues with a man loving another man, and wanting to socially "legitimize" that relationship. It's gross as hell, but i really could give a fuck less what kind of sex other people are having. Let em get hitched. .Why would I care? I sincerely don't.

The problem is, the further we stray away from the christian (I'm atheist) morals that our country and culture are founded on, the weaker our country gets as a whole. Obama, of course, understands this. Common beliefs and values, reinforced by religion, are what holds societies together. As much as I'd like to believe in some new age, progressive, liberal value system...I just don't think it works long term. We are a Christian nation like it or not. While far from perfect, it has served to unite us and allow us to build one of the greatest nations in history.

It's ridiculous to think we could completely separate church from state.

my 2 cents.

The topic is marriage, not reproduction. Most currently married people are not trying to reproduce. The Duggard family do not represent most of society.

Weaker how? The Bible belt has higher crime rates, alcoholism, lower incomes, etc.

Vermont is very low crime and often goes entire years without a murder. Vermont was the first state to have gay marriage and is loaded with hippies like Ben and Jerry.

I wouldn't be so certain. I am often surprised when interrogating gays about their roles in the bedroom.

Damn, I'm always dying to ask people this stuff but am usually too polite and sober to inquire. Will you let me know the next time you're starting one of your hypothetical interrogations? Maybe at ASW? You'd have plenty of subjects.

We are in no way, nor have we ever been, a Christian nation. Many of the founders were fiercely anti-church. American has been getting weaker from the very start, as all government do, it has nothing to do with religious values.

"Millions of innocent men, women and children, since the introduction of Christianity, have been burnt, tortured, fined, imprisoned; yet we have not advanced an inch towards uniformity. What has been the effect of coercion? To make one half the world fools, and the other half hypocrites. To support roguery and error all over the earth." - Jefferson
