Nutritional supplements for working out

Recentley bought this because it's pretty cheap, how can I know if it's good or not?

BulkPowders.co.uk : Bodybuilding, Sports and Nutritional Supplements

Yeah I'm in the UK too and get all my weird supplements from there.

That's actually the exact protein I use after my afternoon workout - it's not too bad at all for general purpose. Cheap as well. The ones you want to watch out for are like the GNC and Holland and Barrett nasty stuff that's pretty much useless.

I use VP2 in the mornings because it's notoriously awesome I'm really hammering the weights hard and looking to put on as much muscle mass as possible (it's like 35 pounds though in the UK for a 908g tub which is OBSCENE) so there's no way I'm gonna pay to take it four times a day :)

I just eat 5-6 small meals a day, lean proteins and every day making sure I get some high quality protein in there with BCAAs... also I take some amino caps before strength workouts, along with some NO.

I can't speak for those who do bulking since I'm not trying to get bigger

Might want to check out TrueProtein.

Since VP2 is Hydrolyzed Whey check out - Hydrolyzed Whey Isolate Ultra Grade or Hydrolyzed Whey Protein High Grade

You have the ability to make your own custom mix too. So you could make a custom mix for your PWO shake which would have your Glutamine and Dextrose already mixed in. - Custom Mixes

They ship international, but not sure on the rates. Worth a look though.

You could email/call the company and ask to see the Certificate of Purity on it. That will basically let you know if you are getting complete shit or not.

EDIT: Just looked at the site. It appears they have a certificate of analysis somewhere on the site, but I can't find it. I'm assuming the "82%" in the product name refers to the purity, but not sure. It never hurts to contact the company about it though.

You sure about this? I was told very different from people on BB. I thought if anything, they were for cutting rather than bulking (the OP).

Most protein sups have a 2/1/1 mix of the key aminoacids anyways.

Hi Deckah,

I'll be the first to say, I'm not a bodybuilder, and my understanding of things might be somewhat elementary. But from what I hear muscle tissue is literary 30% aminos that are found in bcaas.

Also...I totally have to agree with the food consensus. From having seen where all these supplements are manufactured from...almost ALL of them originally were discovered in food. Now a day they are often synthetically manufactured...but all indications say eat a variety of meat & organs from wild game or from small local farms, where the animals have lived outside their entire lives and are well taken care of, and all of this supplement stuff goes out the window.

You probably don't need to spend money on anything but protein powder. Possibly a form of creatine. Food is your friend and you need to learn how many calories you need to take in over maintenance. I am carb sensitive so I keep carbs lower while bulking and add in more healthy fats but a lot of people can get away with 40% protein (Chicken/Beef/Tuna/Salmon) 40% carbohydrates/CHO (Brown Rice/Sweet Potatoes/Oatmeal) and 20% healthy fats (avocados/EVOO/almonds) eat 5-7 times a day and you should see progress.

Some good advice in this thread and some bad... Do some more reading at the forum I linked and you will get some good ideas on how to properly bulk.

If you haven't been lifting for more than a year or 2 don't even touch Epistane or any other pro steroids OR.. you are under 25 you don't even need to touch any form of steroid/pro steroid.

Best of gains my friend.

Eat 200 gram of protein a day and stick to around 2500 calories. This isn't a body building forum, look here if you want proper advice: Nutrition - Bodybuilding.com Forums

But taking just supplements you're not going to see optimum results, you need to change your whole diet.

huh? what if he is 6" and weighs 170lbs? Wouldn't be nearly enough calories....

BCAA's and EAA's are more often taken during a cutting phase to prevent going into a catabolic state due to reduced calories. Taking while bulking (building muscle) you could argue they are just as important. Never miss a workout without my watermelon flavored Xtend.

Over 95% of people in gyms over train! If you spend over 2 hours per week in the gym you are overtraining for a hard gainer.

To gain muscle you have to train correctly.

The book I recommended is called Beyond Brawn written by Stuart McRobert. (under $20 from Amazon). He was a hard gainer and has written many articles in Flex and Muscle Mag over the years. You will learn all you need to learn from this book.

You may also find on google some articles written by Stuart McRobert.

No shit? ..... you said this just about 14 hours ago...

I take GNC whey protein. 100-120 grams per day.

Protein shake + oatmeal + two bananas in the morning.
Protein shake + one banana before a workout.
Protein shake + one banana after a workout, right after that some oranges or apples. A bit later some almonds or other nuts.
Then some meal, like pork/chicken + potatoes.
Protein shake in the evening.
Protein shake before going to bed.

Additionally oranges/apples and nuts throughout the day. And constantly chewing on some green veggies. Also drink lots of water.

I decided I don't want to take creatine, but this would be the first additional thing I would take if I wanted to go beyond just protein.

I don't know why people bash GNC. It tastes OK, dissolves well, and contains pretty much the same protein as other brands out there.

I added to my original post because there are a lot of stupid and irresponsible posts that are recommending useless supplements.

HE DOES NOT NEED SUPPLEMENTS.

I do not understand people that spend hundreds/thousands of dollars on supplements for a less than a 1% gain. ????

I think my advice is better than the advice you posted.

And people bash GNC because it is WAY over priced.

You basically said the same thing haus...

Supplements are useful if you know what you are taking and are serious about training. No one needs supplements but it comes down to if you want to train harder... recover faster.. etc... and nice statistic of 1% "gain". Care to quote a source? Or is this more of your brotelligence?

Is that what I said... did I recommend them? What I said was that if you haven't been training for 2 years or are under 25 there is no need to touch the stuff as your natty Test. levels are high and gains with proper nutrition and training will be sufficient. Most people don't understand how the endocrine system works and how these chemicals effect that feedback loop let alone how to do a proper post cycle therapy or even what that is.

You are funny tho man... can see why your reputation proceeds you....

bsn- true mass. its a weight gainer and it actually tastes pretty good. full of BCAAs and other nutrients. You can find it at a a decent price if you just search google for it. typically on supplementwarehouse.com or cheapvitamins.com

My 'source' for spending a lot of money for only a 1% or less gain is from the late BodyBuiding/Steriod author Daniel Duchaine from MuscleMag Magazine several years ago. That is what his opinion of supplement use was.

Taking supplements does not mean you are more serious about training, it just means you are spending more money.

I would NEVER take steriods. Even with the best post cycle therapy you still run a risk of ruining erectile function. Why would you risk your sex life by not being able to get it up to look a little bigger and lift more weights in front of men in a gym?

If a person does not care about sex or women then by all means go ahead and take steroids......

You should not have even mentioned steroids in this thread.

Why would you say that? Based on 1.5 grams of protein per day per kilo of lean mass, 4-5 shakes per day with 20 grams of protein is about right.

I'm pretty sure he was referring to you utilizing protein shakes way more than whole food protein sources, not the amount of protein you are taking in.

Yep. That's true. But I'm skinny by nature. So it would be close to impossible for me to continuously stuff myself with enough food to get the required amount of amino acids and calories.

right now your protein setup (simplified version) is this

shake
prewo shake
postwo shake
whole food
shake
shake

and you're telling me that a protein setup like this would be too difficult to consume?

whole food
prewo shake
postwo shake
