Materialism

Well said. I remember the dates i did cool shit not the date i bought a sports car.

I don't understand this as I'm a petrol head. I would buy a sports car for the fun I would have in it, it gives me the same enjoyable emotions as the "cool shit" you do, so I don't see the difference. People buying objects just because they can is something different.

Buncha broke ass peasants in this thread. Just keep telling yourselves you don't "want" the shit you can't afford.

I just moved states away and sold literally ALL of my shit because I didn't want to haul it down.

I've never been happier in my life.

Fuck a three car garage full of crap. Fuck a closet full of clothes I never wore. Fuck clutter. Fuck your snuggie and your electric backscratcher. Fuck STUFF.

Hey now, what the hell did a snuggie ever do to you?

Sounds a little desperate VS minimalist who can actually afford the extras.
Did you MAKE $ for the sacrifice you made?

It was actually one of the most awesome/memorable experiences I've ever had.

It's freeing when you realize just how little you can actually live with. We had about $4,000 between us to make stuff happen. I mean it's one thing to cut down to 100 items or whatever, but another to not technically be living anywhere. It was funny cause we'd mess with people and no one would believe us since it was a 6 month old car. It still was fun as hell.

Shedding yourself of anything that you take for granted makes you feel so much more alive. It's also is an amazing motivator to make you hustle and get out of your comfort zone.

Plus it created some damn awesome stories.

I might do something similar again next summer and road trip the whole U.S.

Somewhat related, but I got into fasting a couple years ago, and it is liberating to realize how little food you really need to eat to survive.

There is just something elegant about less is more.

Yeah, money doesn't buy happiness if you spend it on things. Money buys happiness when you use it to acquire freedom.

Freedom to say fuck you to anyone.

Freedom to wake up tomorrow morning and go to Australia.

Freedom to live your life exactly how you want to live it, without financial constraint.

Buying stuff makes you happy for a week or whatever, but rarely lasts much longer.

Well said. Its funny you say that. I cherish my "Fuck You Account". Its the one "thing" that I make sure to always keep filling.

At the end of the day, everyone just wants to be happy. Advertising companies would have us believe that buying all sorts of stupid shit will do that, but as many of you guys have discovered, it doesnt.

Buying material objects is stupid because you get your initial happiness and then after awhile you get used to it and after even longer, it gets all shitted up and you rage for wasting your money.

Buying experiences on the other hand...will bring you happiness because your memory sucks and will downplay the bad parts and really remember the good parts.

I'm getting moderated because of links, but do a google search for this study:
if money doesn't make you happy then you probably aren't spending it right

Fuck buying material things.

I hear you on that. I literally have; my bike, computer, clothes, phone, laptop, head phones and toiletries. Plan to live the nomad lifestyle very soon, hopping from country to country.

My brother is a minimalist. I never saw the sense in it.

I really think I have. I do not value material items like I used to. Money now is just a way for me to support me and my family.

Correct - because faggots like Leo from zenhabits.net popularized the whole minimalism shit.
I actually stumbled upon Minimalism in 1998, when I backpacked around Europe for 4 solid months with nothing but what was on my back.

There wasn't a word for minimalism yet that I ever heard for another decade, but that was the feeling I was attracted to; the pure freedom to hop up and go explore another country on a whim... Something you just can't do with lots of possessions.

Backpackers and globetrotters have been doing the minimalist thing since the bronze age without calling it that; but they all see the benefit.
