Materialism

If you got the money spend it. Why sacrifice the enjoyments of life? You guys going to have the benjis sprinkled over your casket in your 6ft hole or what?

Everything that I own stays in my bag with me. I'm a straight up vagabond so anything more is just a pain in the ass. ( I'm 27 single guy so this works).

I don't want a house, I don't want a shiny car. The only thing that I want (for now) from a large bank account is the freedom and lower stress life that it provides.

How many people during this financial crisis has found out that their mortgaged house and car payment is like some heavy shackles holding them down?

Also, I've happily noticed that because of my very few possessions, I don't even bother looking at the price for most things that I do buy. If I'm going to get something then it is quality. When I had a lot more stuff (and less money) then I couldn't just do that.

Truth: Me and my best friend lived out of my car for 3 months in Miami/Fort Lauderdale 2 summers ago trying to start up a Groupon competitor. Does that count as minimalism?

Sounds a little desperate VS minimalist who can actually afford the extras.
Did you MAKE $ for the sacrifice you made?

Everything I own can fit in the backseat of a car.
Same here.

Wanting a lot of money is not synonymous with wanting a lot of stuff.

Money is a tool and a passport to me. Nothing more. I want lots of it because I want to be able to do more things than I can do right now. I want entre where I currently cannot pass. Wristwatches and sports cars are not for me.

When you're married with a kid, the things that are important change.

I would say I'm neither though... I invest in my home, sure... but shiny cars... no... jewelry... pfft... fancy clothes... no way...

I do like to play lots of golf and travel to as many places as possible... I buy lots of wine for my cellar, invest in my child's education, etc etc...

I wish I could pickup and go backpacking across Europe, but that ship has sailed for me.

I like stuff. I love to travel but I also like a home base that is comfortable and is mine. I don't like moving house because it takes a long time until you have things just right, exactly how you like them. Usually this takes a year or more to get right, to make it a model of efficiency.

I don't need a LOT of stuff, but I like interior design, furniture, art, a killer entertainment system and powerful computers with big screens that a laptop just doesn't provide.

Ultimately I envision having a home in both British Columbia and Europe from which I will split my time evenly.

this shit about everything you own can fit into X sounds hell fucking dumb.

on a side note, I am selling everything i own just to free myself of the trappings it made. it is really liberating once you start. biggest mistake I made was thinking I had to have XYZ because I thought thats how it was ( had to have a house, to raise a kid.. etc )

There's nothing wrong with having kids as long as they fit into a shoe box and leave room for a few extra things.

I can fit everything I own into X.

If my apartment were burning down, I'd grab my didgeridoo.

Two years ago I got rid of almost everything I owned. Now the things I do own are there for convenience, but I have zero attachment and everything can easily be replaced (the handful of books I kept, a couple guitars, a couple computers, a very small collection of clothes).
