Luke's 4K post: How to GTFO! (And into Thailand)

What's the hype with Thailand? I don't get it.

I'd go to Vietnam or China instead. Same advantages minus the polluted air and ladyboys.

Last months was about 30$ for me, running AC 24/7, fridge + laptop. Don't know if that's expensive or not

$30? 1000 baht? How do you get away with that, especially with A/C? Our last electric bill was 3400 baht, so what? $140 USD, give or take?

We only have AC in our bedroom, but then again, I leave it on basically 24/7. I like having the option of getting blasted by +18C weather whenever the urge hits me. :)

Rainy season is finally here though, so maybe should stop doing that.

Because people in Vietnam and China don't much care for us white folk, whereas in Thailand, people are indifferent to white people.

China likes to compete, and a few decades ago the US constantly bombed the shit out of Vietnam for years. Neither of them are thrilled with Westerners. Then there's Malaysia, but you run into a decent amount of prejudice there too, because we don't bow down to Allah fives times a day. Then there's Singapore, but it's so expensive, there's no point in living there unless you actually do business within Singapore.

^ I see... I think it's just you Americans though. Now that I think about it I did feel like there was some hostility towards Americans when I was in China. I mean, just the fact that they charge you guys twice as much for a visa than any other country is an insult in itself...

As a Canadian I never felt any kind of hate or prejudice when I was living in China. Quite the opposite actually. People were so nice to me I felt like the whole thing was staged lol. (Note that I was in a medium sized city - it's probably different in big westernized cities like Shanghai, Beijing or H.K.)

For many people, great beaches, cheap living and boozing and abundant attractive (and willing) women is enough.

China doesn't have pollution? I read on the internet that some cities in China have horrible air pollution.

129 units, 1032 baht

how many units did you use? maybe they just charge you more per unit?

Actually I think you should stay where ever you want, have a great time and do not come to Bangkok - life here is hard enough as it is..

whereas in Thailand, people are indifferent to white people.

lol yeah, they use skin whiteners and umbrellas when it's sunny out because of their extreme indifference.

But in all seriousness, I've now been to every SEAsian country and it's my opinion that Thailand wins for livability for white, male Americans. It looks like I'll be spending ~3 months there every year or two for a long time.

That's actually higher than my unit cost. Not sure how you run an A/C all the time for less than US$30 per month. The small A/C in one of my bedrooms is a 13,000 btu unit that uses 1,300 watts when the compressor is running. If I leave it on all the time it cycles at about 50% duty cycle so in one 24 hour period eats about 14 kWh. That works out to about US$1.50 per day which is roughly the difference I see in my electric bill, and that's at a rate less than 8 baht per unit.

I would agree. And for most western women it sucks. They end up hating it because almost no man local or foreign will give them a second look. The western women who like it are the few with a nice tight family and money to afford all the luxuries.

I think we would all agree you are not like *most* western women. There was that one thread that made a big point about you being so hot. If true that would make you propular everywhere, even in Thailand. But for most it sort of does suck and they complain about it constantly on forums, blogs and IRL.

I think Luke is in Kansas at the moment. I'm here in Thailand but the earthquake was very far away. There was a tsunami, however, but only 30 cm high when it reached Phuket and no damage reported.

I usually don't address this type of stuff because it seems so obnoxious to talk about one's own attractiveness on a forum but since it's directly related to this conversation I'll just say: I'm not that hot. Probably just above average. The point is: I don't think that I usually turn heads, but as a 5 foot 9 inch white woman walking down the street in Asia, you get noticed. By everyone. But what does suck, is if you don't happen to be attracted to Asian men. I never was (A guy has to pretty much be above 6"2 for me to even see him that way). I imagine other Caucasian women have similar qualities on what they find attractive in men, which maybe the root of their complaints.

I'm with geomark here. Can't stand those ugly hippie backpacker chicks. Not all of them are like that though, some hot ones too but rare in between...

Thanks to turbolapp I now feel like a manlet at 6'1"... brb crying

Just kidding, I feel like a giant walking around :D

You must really be hotter than you let on (pics needed), because my experience in Asia is that western women are generally ignored on the dating market by both the locals and the foreigners. There are tons and tons of blog posts complaining about this. It generally comes down to western women not wanting to conform to the patriarchal society style where women aim to please men and not the other way around. In my time in Thailand, I found most western women to be bitter and resentful at everyone and everything, with frequent exceptions of course.

They don't white their skin to look like whites but to look like Koreans, Chinese and Japanese who are the main cultural influences in the rest of Asia, particularly the Chinese (who are lighter skinned) since the upper class is almost exclusively Sino-Thai or mixes thereoff. Look at the current female president for an example.

Wow, totally false. At least by my own anecdotal experience. Infact, it was quite the opposite, being a single white female in some of these places is very unique and you get noticed merely for that factor alone. Not unlike wf actually.
I'm sure any SWF in BKK would be noticed, perhaps even stared at, by the locals... But I don't think it's out of attraction. It would be like how Texans would see an Albino midget walking around... ;)

So Luke...did you feel that 8.6 earthquake today?
Sorry, I'm in KS still. I've decided to not move until after the general election. If Paul wins I might not even move at all.

Don't be so modest, we all know you're a "10." Otherwise you couldn't have seduced Jon into making you a Mod. :food-smiley-010:

Well that explains Texas, at least. ;)

This is what I have observed, so many bitter comments about Thailand from western women, quite the opposite of western men. Most western men in Thailand are dazzled by the petite dark skinned little local girls and don't give big western women a second look. Local Thai guys generally think of western women as sleazy due to their hard partying and revealing clothes they wear when here on holiday.

There are exceptions of couse. Like Natalie Glebova, Miss Universe who married Thai tennis star Paradorn.
Paradorn_Srichaphan-Natalie_Glebova.jpg

She was idolized by Thais because she was white, beautiful, polite and graceful. Paradorn's family commented in the Thai press that they never thought they would give their blessing to their son marrying a western woman but that Natalie completely charmed them. However, it didn't last long, they are divorced now.

Regular western women may also get princess treatment if they are graceful and polite in their behavior - they distinguish themselves from the average westerner on holiday. BTW, this also applies to men - most regular Thai women (not bar girls) are suspicious of western men since they have the well deserved reputation for whore mongering. A guy who doesn't drink or smoke and behaves politely distinguishes himself from the crude masses.
