Laptop Recommendations

I just got this a few days ago and it's the best value per dollar I've ever spent on a laptop or desktop I custom built:

Acer - 11.6" Aspire One Laptop - 2GB Memory - 320GB Hard Drive - Ash Black - AO756-2623

It's the perfect size for travelling and when I'm at home I use it as a desktop (hdmi out to monitor and wireless keyboard/mouse). The new "Celeron" is actually a Sandybridge scaled down i3. Spend another $130 and upgrade to 8GB of RAM and a 7mm SSD and you have something that can't be beat for the price.

It runs photoshop fine, runs Vegas video fine, and unless you play some hardcore games, it will run games fine as well (I've played Portal 2 and GTA4 at high settings with no issues).

Seriously, don't let the "Aspire One" name fool you, this isn't like their regular line of netbooks... it's more on par with the original Macbook Air than anything. This dude has the best review for it that I've seen:

Amazon.com: MWebb's review of Acer Aspire One AO756-2808 11.6-Inch Netbo...

Seriously, I don't know why Acer isn't marketing the hell out of this thing. I picked it over $800 laptops.

I JUST heard Leo Laporte talking about this laptop on Saturday. He pointed out what you just did - it's just like the Macbook Air. I just may have to get it... Thank you sir.

Update: Fuck it. I bought what Subigo recommended. I needed a little laptop to do some stuff on the road. Now I can dickroll and troll at the beach.

Never thought I'd say this on WF: THANK YOU SUBIGO.

If you want to upgrade to a SSD, I'd get this: Newegg.com - SAMSUNG 830 Series MZ-7PC128N/AM 2.5" 128GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) Notebook Upgrade Kit

Honestly though, the mechanical drive that comes with it is fine for basic stuff. I haven't even received my SSD yet, so all of my testing has still been with the default configuration (I did add a total of 8GB of RAM though).

Nice catch. Did you buy that model from Bestbuy.com? Can you link to the ram / ssd you bought? I've heard Crucial SSDs were good but I don't much I plan on building a new desktop soon.

Looks nice, and heck, would be nice if it wasn't a few years too late. Bad ass Windows tablets on the horizon afterall.

If Microsoft would have announced a price when they announced the Surface, I probably wouldn't have bought the Acer. I just didn't want to wait another two months and then watch them price the thing at $1k. If they price it around the $400-600 mark, I'll still get one.

Yeah, I got it in the store during the tax-free weekend. Remember, it can only take 7mm slim profile drives. I linked the one I bought (from Newegg) above.

For RAM, I used two of these sticks:

PNY - 4GB DDR3 SDRAM Memory Module - MN4096SD3-1333

Thanks I'm going to buy it from Bestbuy. Everything on my current setup is faltering I've literally bought a usb soundcard, usb wifi card and a laptop cooler cause all of the internal ones are broken. If I unplug the cooler for more than 15 minutes it shuts off.

At this point I just need to buy something else so thanks! :xmas-smiley-016:

I've had a shit load of laptops over the years. I usually buy one every year. And hands down, the best build quality and reliability has been with toshiba. I'm on a 13" Portege now, and it's the best fucking laptop I've ever had.

I just found a video review for the Acer:

Guys, I highly recommend waiting for Windows 8 to come out. Even if you're not planning on making the switch, it will make the older windows 7 laptops being discussed here last gen and we will see a huge drop. If you can wait a month or two I really recommend that.

If you're waiting for the best you will never make a purchase. Regardless of what you buy, your choice will be obsolete in a few months tops.

Would you buy a Macbook knowing the new version is coming out in a month? Or buy an iPhone 4S right now? Sure, if you just keep waiting for something better to come along you'll never end up buying anything... but when you specifically know all of the major laptop carriers are about to refresh their lineups in a month, it would be pretty stupid to buy one right now.

1. Windows 8 is a joke on a laptop. I tried it for a week and went back to Windows 7.

2. Any laptop bought right now will qualify for an upgrade to Windows 8 for just $14.99. - https://windowsupgradeoffer.com/en-US

What I am saying is, after Windows 8 comes out the laptops discussed here will be "last gen" and will see a price drop.

BTW here's a cnet review http://reviews.cnet.com/operating-systems/windows-8-release-to/4505-3671_7-35321713.html. 4/5 stars for Windows 8.

BTW here's a cnet review Windows 8 Release to Manufacturing Review - Watch CNET's Video Review. 4/5 stars for Windows 8.

Windows 8 isn't going to be released until October 26th, over two months away. Most manufacturers will still be pushing Windows 7 until January, due to the Windows 8 upgrade offer. And on top of all of that, most manufacturers won't be releasing new models until late Winter/early Spring of next year.

My point is you're not going to see "next gen Windows 8 laptops" anytime soon and any price drop on current laptops will be small.

And cnet can give Windows 8 whatever score it wants. For someone who actually uses their laptop to do work, Windows 8 was nothing but workflow-blocking-distraction. Seriously, if you haven't used it, go install it. It's not fun.

I played around with it on a VMware set up. It's fairly similar (read, identical to windows 7) in desktop mode. If you don't like those new metro features just do what I did.. Don't use them?

There's no way to *not* use metro. Even if you create a million keyboard shortcuts and clutter the fuck out of your taskbar and desktop with icons, you still have to enter metro for changing settings, removing software, etc...

And lol @ that cnet review. Let's see how much he likes it on a non-touch screen with a trackpad. I would be all over Windows 8 on a tablet/touchscreen, sure, but on a regular laptop it's just retarded.
