My wordtracker e-mail I got today had a link that suprised me, one of those "make $100,000 in a month things." I wasn't expecting it, plus it had a video so I checked it out. (you can watch it here, its actually got some good stuff in it http://www.convertlinks.com/whitehatseo )

So, the video has this guy with a wedding favors site on it. Deja vu, I had listened in to some conference call over a year and a half ago. I am pretty sure its the same guy, couldn't remember the name, I did remember "wedding favors."

What makes this so interesting? Well, in the video he shows his companies earnings, month by month plus talks about optimizing the site. One interesting example is they stuck a "hackersafe" button on top of their page and it increased conversions. Blah blah, they also talk about how all the other wedding favor sites make these "optimization" changes the day after they do.

Ok, so whats the trick here? His site is a -wholesale- product site. All of the other wedding favor sites are buying the products from him, and by showing all these optimization tips it increases his bottom line overall.

This is the strategy:
- Identify a market that is weak in both SEO & marketing
- Create a wholesale ecommerce site for that market
- Constantly participate in case studies, articles, video tutorials, programs, etc. By being very open you turn in to a "go to" person. You want every other site owner in the market to know who you are. Additionly, by making your earnings public you will attract a lot of people trying to startup a site; they will buy inventory from you. Even if they go out of business in a month, you've made your profit.

I think the confrence call you're remembering was Dan Theis from SeoResearchLabs... he's always talking about americanbridal.com being one of his "students" that has done so well.

You have to keep in mind that to do those kind of numbers, you have to have a massive inventory. Also, getting SEO guys to shell out their money to stock and sell products on their own isn't an easy thing, they'd much rather run though an affiliate program. There are easier ways to make money on the internet.

Nope that wasn't it; this was from a non-internet marketing channel and the guy on it was talking specifically about the site he had started just months ago.

Sure there are downsides, ecommerce is a tough business -- but there are big advantages in owning the actual site & customer base. There are tons of people out there who want to be in business for themselves. I don't know what your definition of "SEO guys" is, but I suspect of the people who are working on SEO, only a tiny fraction make a living doing so.
