Is it me or are my work mates fucked?

Waiting to marry is a bad, bad idea, none of my married friends (and none of my close friends have gotten divorced, go figure) figured they married too early, but a few wished they gotten married earlier.

LOL... I saw that comment too, and didn't want to jump in with the fact that divorce rate is above 50%... I can't even begin to comprehend that guy's logic with divorces at 50%. I just left it alone.

Thanks to amateursurgeon for bringing in some sanity.

- More on houses. WTF is this UK/US mentality of "flipping houses" or "it will increase in value" - IDIOTS! This is one of the reasons for the housing bubble. Buy a house as a place to LIVE in, not as a (very insecure, I might add) investment.

Yep - investing in property is ok in my opinion, but I'd never consider my home an investment. Our house was an absolutely wonderful find to live in for 10 years, but if I was considering it from an investment point of view, I wouldn't touch it. The two have totally different characteristics. (personally, I'd probably do commercial property rather than residential if I was investing, but that's a different thread)

- On renting. For me, renting is (currently) what I like to do. This also comes from very good (tenant friendly) laws in Germany and Switzerland. Something breaks? Call the landlord to repair it or reduce rent. It also gives me the freedom to move wherever I want, which has come in handy several times already. I also see the shit my parents and in-laws put up with in their own property (apartment and house, respectively) repairs, taxes, neighbors, etc.. No thanks.

Yes, I think the property-owning obsession in this country (UK) is ridiculous. The newspapers are full of "millions of young people won't be able to buy a house until they're nearly 40. Oh noes!" bullshit. So? Why the hell do you want a house in your 20s, it's just something else to worry about.

Unfortunately, if you have kids (and thus need some stability) it's a different matter here - nearly impossible to get a rental term over 12 months, and finding decent rental property is very, very hard in the South East.

I was just trying to find stats to back up the fact that renting is cheaper than buying long-term (as I've seen a lot of numbers supporting that in the past).

But I found that the opposite is true now that housing prices are low and rents are rising:

Buying a Home is Cheaper Than Renting 98% of the Time | Moneyland | TIME.com

Renting A Home Costs 15 Percent More Than Buying One

There's no one correct answer... you need to do the calculations carefully for each house and situation. TBH cost wasn't the main issue - it is stability we're after (due to child), and you can't get that renting in the UK because of how the market works.

You're fucking dreaming if you think at age forty you can find a hot young twenty-something who will marry and have crazy sex with you just because you have a few bucks in the bank.
You took the blue pill, hm? At least you're right regarding the money, although it helps.

The solution: be a billionaire.

The alternative solution: be really fucking poor and live off the gov't in a 5 bedroom house in Chelsea for your 7 kids.

Attractiveness in the whole bundle, otherwise I would have written physical attraction or sex appeal... it's still not a sure thing to be able to convince a young, wife material girl to hook up with you if you're an old bald man. Money isn't all that counts to women, shocker I know.

This.

I am not certain where you guys are from, but you need to spend some time in Southern California. Not only will those young women look better here they most certainly will do everything for you.

In LA their are an infinite number of young gorgeous women that start the conversation with figuring out "who" you are. If you do not understand the "who" then you have some catching up to do in the real world.

One more thing, you can do this not just at forty but also at 50 and 60. Not only that your wife will spend all day in the gym just to make certain you stay happy with her and do not trade her in for a younger one. After all they stamp "expired" on all women in SoCal at age 30 (though they are not). Come out here to some beach cities (and I am not talking Long Beach) and go to a good gym during the day and talk to some of them.

Most are educated, professional, cultured and intelligent.

Both of you could not be more wrong.

I live in Miami Beach... Shit's like that too. You can't walk into a bar, grocery store, or starbucks without fall over hot chicks starting conversations... oh man... the gyms... that's shit's more like a hook up place than anything else...
